Special Time with FOB Ann Kennedy

a morning with ann kennedy

I got to spend a very special morning with Ann Kennedy on Tuesday, toward the end of her and Bob’s month-long annual visit to their beloved Gloucester.  We met early for a delicious and hearty breakfast at Sailor Stan’s, then went for a nice long walk out Eastern Point, to the spot I now call Evelyn’s Point, beyond the Retreat House and Brace Cove.  We encountered many beautiful and fun things along our journey, including a mother duck with her ducklings (she had to be babysitting, as they couldn’t all have been her’s) and two turtles sunning on a rock in Niles Pond, plus a dreadful and vicious bullfrog that Ann attempted unsuccessfully to capture and bring to Joey.  This has become one of my favorite spots to walk to and it was nice to be able to share it with Ann, who had never been there.  The trails through the woods are soft and peaceful.  At one point we were forced to stop and turn back because of a large uprooted tree that made the path we were on unpassable.  It was a special time with a special FOB and friend, and I look forward to a repeat when they return next year.

Congratulations to Ann and Bob who just celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary.

  1. Nice adventure with Ann Kennedy, a great contributor to GMG. Does the trail to Evelyn’s Point start as the MA Audubon entry point on Eastern Point Boulevard?

    1. The way I go is on a path called “Megan’s Way”. As you are going toward Brace Cove and the Retreat House, the road forks. If you go to the right, the Megan’s way sign (on the right) and path (on the left) is a short way up that road (don’t know what the road is called). The path goes through a lovely wood and comes out at a set of wooden steps up onto the rocks. There is a path that goes to the left, toward Brace Cove, so you don’t have to climb rocks the whole way, or can if you want, until you reach the backside of Brace rock.

    1. I walked out there this morning and you won’t believe what I saw in Niles Pond – in addition to the turtles which I saw again – an otter! It was so cool. I also saw the snake again and the bullfrog, but he jumped into the water immediately. I’m glad we were able to take that walk together, and look forward to doing again next year when you return.

  2. I think that the path that EJ is referring to is at the intersection of Megan’s Way ( a private drive way) and Prentiss Rd.
The path to the ocean is on the property of the Gonzaga Retreat and is to be respected for the use of those in retreat. The Retreat has been gracious in allowing public use of this area but please be respectful of it -proceed silently, don’t take dogs there -and don’t walk in front of the retreat, especially while a retreat is ongoing.
    Thank you
