Just Moved The GMG Search Box To The Top Right Corner of The Blog

Thanks to a suggestion from one of our FOB’s that the search box can be difficult to find I just moved it to the very top right hand column of our page.

For those of you who subscribe and get the email blast which is an aggregation of the days posts, you can get here by clicking the title of any post and it will bring you to the blog where you can go to the top right hand column and search for anything GMG related that you may have heard about if it’s not still on the front page.

Holiday Concert at Willowdale and Leven at the Sawyer Free

Lisa, Lora, and Briar sang to a packed house last night. Their solos, and voices in unison, of traditional classic songs, made for a beautiful evening of holiday music. My favorites were Carol of the Bells and the tender lullaby by Paul Williams and Joseph M. Martin: Still is the Night; also by  Joseph Martin was the joyful O Come Emmanuel and Listen to the Stars, both from The Voices of Christmas.

Sisters Lisa and Lora Tamagini and Briar have known each other since they began their opera careers in Boston. Lora and Lisa have toured the world over and Lora’s original music can be heard on three CDs: Joy in My Soul, Sing to the Lord, and Sing Gloria. Briar is passionate about supporting local artists and it has been her dream to host musical concerts. The success of Willowdale has made it possible for her to create unforgettable holiday performances for everyone to enjoy!

Pitbull murdered in Gloucester??

Hello, I was wondering if you heard about a pitbull found dead on the side of the road gutted. From what I gathered on facebook and by the Sweet Paws Rescue of Essex facebook page, a woman & her son were walking their dog around the Sadler St Burnham’s field area yesterday. Their dog reacted to something in the bushes & when they looked it was a dead pitbull sliced open. This is horrifying. I guess the police think the dog was used for fighting. I wish I could have seen the dog’s body to check for scars to confirm it was a fighting dog or not. Not all pitbulls are fighting dogs. Many are show dogs or weight pulling contest dogs.

There is no media attention to this and I don’t know why. I am Gloucester resident who owns a 6 month old pitbull puppy and I am outraged. The pitbull population in Gloucester has grown a lot in the past 10-15 years and there are many responsible owners here. Is there anything you can do to investigate this further? I emailed the Times but didn’t get any responses. I am a member of B.O.N.E (Bully Owners of New England) and we do a lot of pitbull advocacy work. Pitbulls are the most tortured, brutalized, and misunderstood dog.

Allen_DylanJoey certainly got it right in his Monday post about Ladies Night.  Downtown Gloucester is absolutely the place to be tomorrow (Thursday).

And if you need a break from your local shopping (that supports our local economy), mosey on down to the Gloucester House some time between 8 and 10:30 to catch Allen Estes with his son, Dylan ~ two good looking guys with great voices and songs that will warm your heart.

Have something to eat, a few drinks and then get right back out there and, as Joey says, drop some cash.

Meanwhile, there’s great live music all over Cape Ann tonight too — and plenty for the guys tomorrow if you want to get away from the ladies.  Check it all out here.

Hello, my name is Leo and I am a one-year-old male pup.   I am lively, loveable,
and active.   I get along with other dogs and people.  I hope you might visit me at the Cape Ann Animal Aid, located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter, Four Paws Lane, Gloucester.

Please attend our Holiday Open House on Sat., Dec. 8 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.  If it snows, it will be held on Dec. 15.   You will receive a behind-the-scenes look at our new beautiful shelter and enjoy festive activities for the entire family – refreshment, raffles and lots of fun!

Also, it is okay to bring toys for shelter cats and dogs and if you want, you can give them all to me for safe keeping!!

19th Century Gloucester Windmills From Al Bezanson

This illustration appears in History of the town and city of Gloucester, Cape Ann Massachusetts, 1892, by James R. Pringle, who wrote,

“A sketch of the town in 1817 was drawn by Capt. John Beach, from a point in the harbor opposite Ten Pound island, off Pavilion Beach.  Standing out prominently in the foreground was an eight-sided wooden windmill erected on the site now occupied by the Pavilion Hotel.  This had been built in 1814 by Ignatius Webber, and its long arms, fitted with sails, made it a conspicuous object, and gave the town quite a foreign aspect.  It was subsequently removed to a position on Fort Square, where it became a familiar landmark, being destroyed by fire a few years ago.”

Another windmill, of more modern design, is prominent on Five Pound Island in an 1893 photograph by Martha Hovey, reproduced in Wharf and Fleet, by Gordon W. Thomas.
