Gloucester Harbor Schooner Race From Len Burgess
Last Monday evening was the first race between two schooners built by Master Shipwright, Harold Burnham, the Thomas E. Lannon Captained by Tom Ellis and the schooner Ardelle captained by Harold Burnham.
It proved to be great fun for all. Besides the schooner race itself, there was a lively contest between the ships guest crews for the best chanty song, knot tying, photography and a lifesaving test.

Schooner Brilliant ~ Decks Awash From Fred Bodin
The Brilliant was built in 1932, and is 61.5 feet long. She was designed for speed, and set the record for a Trans-Atlantic crossing for a vessel of her size at the time. This is an ocean-going, sail powered speedboat if ever there was one. As you can see, there was good wind during this Gloucester Schooner Race, where one competing schooner blew out her topsail, and there were a few green-looking photographers on the Committee/Press boat. Schooner Brilliant will compete in the Gloucester Schooner Races this year.
As with all historic schooners, paying passengers are essential to support the cost of Schooner Brilliant, sailing from her home port of Mystic (CT) to Gloucester, during the race itself, and the trip back to Mystic. Any leg of this voyage would certainly be an experience of a lifetime! Announcement re Volunteers needed for Gloucester block Party this Saturday August 18th
Hi Joey – I’m working on the Downtown Gloucester Block Parties. The July party went very well; this weekend’s party is shaping up nicely as well.

Striped bass tournament to benefit Open Door Pantry
Tourney in memory of Danvers official has raised over $44,000 in the last nine years; marks its tenth anniversary Labor Day weekend
Tickets are now on sale at Winchester Fishing in Gloucester and Fin and Feather in Essex for a striped bass fishing tournament to benefit the Open Door Pantry in Gloucester.
The Leo Almeida Memorial North Shore Striped Bass Tournament is celebrating its tenth year this Labor Day weekend. It is the only tournament that combines the North Shore’s fishing heritage with the fight against hunger on Cape Ann and in other local communities.
The tournament will be held Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1-3. Prizes up to $500 will be awarded in various categories, including boat, shore/surf and for youth 15 and under. A raffle of dozens of prizes will also be held. Those who wish to donate to the pantries can enter and will also be eligible to win raffle prizes.
Entry fee is $15. Tickets are available at Winchester Fishing in Gloucester and at Fin and Feather in Essex. Ticket sales end Friday, Aug. 31.
The Open Door Pantry on Emerson Avenue has been feeding local residents for over 25 years. The tournament will also benefit the People to People Food Pantry in Danvers, Our Neighbor’s Table in Amesbury and Essex County Hunger Relief.
Leo Almeida was a lifelong North Shore resident whose commitment to public service was matched by his love of fishing. He died in 2003 shortly before the first North Shore Striped Bass Tournament that he organized. Now family and friends carry on the tournament in his name each year. In the past nine years, the tournament has raised over $44,000 for anti-hunger organizations in Essex County. Over 900 people have participated since the tournament began.

Carol St.John, artist, author and workshop leader, formerly of Gloucester, will be delivering a talk at the Unitarian-Universalist Society in Rockport next Sunday, August 19th at 10:30AM. Her subject includes personal observations and experiences at the US border where Nogales, Sonora meets Nogales, Arizona. She will describe events that demanded her involvement and turned her into an activist for human rights. St.John offers an insider’s view to a situation that is being filmed, exposed and critiqued around the world.
Fishermen Memorial Service
The Fishermen Memorial Service, a ceremony to remember fishermen lost at sea, will be held on Saturday, August 25th. The procession will leave from American Legion Square promptly at 5pm and will proceed to the Monument of the Gloucester Fisherman on George O. Stacy Boulevard where the ceremony will take place. The public is encouraged to participate in the procession and ceremony. Please bring loose flowers to be scattered into the harbor. Wreaths will be placed at the Fishermen’s Monument. If raining, the ceremony will be held in American Legion Post 3, corner of Middle and Washington Streets.

Splash into Cape Ann Museum’s CAMafterhours
Enjoy a Night of Art, Dancing, Music, Fun, Food, Spirits & More
The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to announce this summer’s CAMafterhours, inspired by water, water, the multimedia installation by Gloucester artists Sarah Hollis Perry and Rachel Perry Welty. Come join us for a night of art, dance, music, fun, food & spirits on August 16, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Museum. Free for Museum members; $10 for non-members. Cash bar. Playing off the themes of water, water, dancer Sarah Slifer and musicians Brian King (of What Time is it, Mr. Fox?) and Kristen Miller go Victorian in a performance piece which explores social taboos, inspired by works in the Museum’s collection. Selected songs use water as a metaphor for the unknown. In between these short pieces, DJ mixes provided by Mystery Train Records will fill the Museum galleries. These culled water-themed tunes come directly from the racks of this popular downtown Gloucester vintage record store.
After enjoying the great performances and music, dive beyond the water, water installation and follow the CAM scavenger hunt into the other galleries. Prizes will be awarded! Stirring things up, Alchemy Bistro’s general manager, Matt Rose, and Clayton Belanger, principle bartender, will give mixology demonstrations featuring Ryan & Wood Distilleries’ Beauport Vodka. A cash bar will also be available and hors d’oeuvres will be generously provided by Alchemy Bistro and Latitude 43.

The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is closed during the month of February, on Mondays, and on major holidays. Bolognese Sauce

There are many variations for what is known as Bolognese sauce, and every Italian American home usually has its own.
Felicia Ciaramitaro Mohan’s version is typical. In her home, as in most other Italian American homes that take their Italian food seriously, it is a staple sauce, especially for the traditional Sunday dinners.
Felicia says that the best way to think of this sauce is as “a meat sauce, it is thick and not juicy.” There are two types of meat — ground hamburger and ground veal — but relatively little tomato sauce.
“I use it as the stuffing along with some peas for my arancini,” she says. “It is almost always served on pasta for Sunday dinner as well.”

Get to the Farmer’s Market Tomorrow for your Fresh Blueberries
This Sunday’s Mug Up at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery will feature a blueberry food competition. Entries can be anything made with Cape Ann blueberries. So if you want to participate, get picking, or get yourself to the Farmer’s Market tomorrow. There will be a famous unnamed ringer in the mix, so bring on your best.
