Something Big that Chronicle Missed

Gloucester has been featured on Chronicle once again and this time they focus on tourism, art, fishing & Fiesta — mostly the greasy pole.  And while the show sheds a fairly good light on Gloucester, it misses one of the our City’s main attractions  — Gloucester’s burgeoning music scene (see tonight’s live music lineup here).

That’s why we’re so lucky to have lured T Max here — publisher of The Noise (New England’s longest running music magazine).  The new issue features stories about music on Cape Ann as well as music on that shark-infested cape named after a fish.  (On the web, the stories are after the features on Brad Byrd from Cape Ann and The Parkington Sisters from Cape Cod).

I was going to thank T Max for the honor of being chosen to write the story about Cape Ann (read it here), but instead I’ll  complain that what I had feared has come to pass: good musicians whom I neglected to mention are asking me why I left them out.  There’s no good answer to that question.  My only excuse is that with limited space and time to write I simply couldn’t include everyone who’s good.  Lame, isn’t it.  Sorry.

Perhaps the next Chronicle story on Gloucester will include at least one segment on Gloucester’s music.  I keep that hope alive given that they referred to Fiesta as Gloucester’s own Mardi Gras, which is, of course, a musical metaphor.

Lamine Toure and Group Saloum

This concert is a benefit for Maritime Gloucester and the North Shore Jazz Project.

Last year Lamine and his band had everyone dancing on the docks. The North Shore Jazz Project mission is to create an environment on the North Shore where music education, performance and appreciation can flourish and Gloucester Maritime needs no introduction.  Lamine Toure comes from a family of Griot’s in Senegal. He teaches African drumming at MIT in Cambridge, Ma. Don’t miss the waterfront dance party of the season.

Supper at Café Bishco

Café Bischo is a little restaurant at 51 Main Street. Yesterday I had supper there with a friend, and it was great as always! We ate at a table outside on the sidewalk, enjoying the sunny summer evening.

I had their “Mediterranean Vegetable Soup”:

It was delicious, and was accompanied by heated, buttered, fresh bread, which was perfect for dipping in the tomato-based broth.

The sun shone bright through my glass of water:

To be honest, all I can vouch for from personal experience is their soup.  That’s the only thing I’ve ever eaten at this venue (and at several other restaurants), because I am a huge soup fan, and their soup is always good!  But the people with whom I have eaten there have also enjoyed their victuals, whether soup or otherwise.  Plus, I have seen a steady flow of people buying their ice cream or frozen yogurt, so that must be good too!

Actually, I can also vouch for their friendly customer service.  So, if while on or near Main Street, you get a hankering for a bite to eat, hot or cold, you should give Café Bishco a try!

Get Free Dog Massage this Thursday!

Gloucester dog park

The Friends of Gloucester Dog Park will be staffing an information table at the Visitor’s Center at Stage Fort Park on alternate Thursdays from 3-5:30pm this summer, starting July 12.  They will have lots of activities and dog park signature merchandise for sale.    There will be raffles complements of Animal Krackers, Essex Bird Shop and Pet Supply and Petco.

First in the lineup of great attractions on July 12th David Feldman of Skillful Hand, a certified dog massage therapist, will be giving FREE dog massages and talking to pet owners from 3pm-4:30pm.  If you are heading to the Farmer’s Market, come on over! (David will be back for a return visit on July 26, so mark your calendars now!)

You are also encouraged to walk around the dog park and let your best friend ‘sniff’ out the site. It’s a great opportunity to get an up close and personal glimpse into the entire process behind the makings of Cape Ann’s first dog park. Come see for yourself what the excitement is all about.

Little Kids Track will start this Wednesday 6pm at the O’Maley Track.

The program is for 5-8 year olds,but if enough 9,10,or 11 year olds show up they can compete also.

The program is free and sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Dept.

The events are the 50 yard and 100 yard Dash and the Long Jump.

There is no registration,come every Wednesday or any Wednesday.

Cindy Cafasso Donaldson to speak at Cove Circle

Cindy Cafasso Donaldson, Vice President & Executive Director, Addison Gilbert Hospital will be the guest speaker at the Cove Circle Thursday, July 26 meeting at 6 p.m.    Ms. Donaldson will provide an update on Addison Gilbert Hospital.

The Cove Circle is a non-profit civic organization serving Cape Ann and is located at Six Breakwater Avenue, Rockport.   New members are always welcome.   Non-member guests are welcome to attend the July 26th meeting.  There is no fee and a cover-dish supper will be held.  Pre-registration is not required.

Last Saturday, I was lucky enough to participate in the first ‘Taste Gloucester’ walking tour. The tour highlighted downtown restaurants and food shops, with a dash of history thrown in.

Patrick Halloran, a Gloucester native who now serves as a fireman in Somerville, served as our tour guide. He graduated GHS in 2002 and his love for Gloucester was apparent as he proudly told us various tales from Gloucester’s history. Patrick himself was a highlight of the tour, with his friendly personality, sense of humor and depth of knowledge.

The tour started at the Fitz Hugh Lane House on Harbor Loop and ended at Turtle Alley Chocolates. Along the way we visited the Topside Grill, Virgilio’s, Intershell’s Fish Market and the Cape Ann Brewery—just to name a few. We enjoyed food samples prepared just for us, shopping opportunities, as well as great customer service by the local shopkeepers. At other stops we learned about the history of the Greasy Pole, the tale of Howard Blackburn, and the history of the Universalist Church. Check out the video for more details.

Who is this tour best suited for? Locals who want a fun and delicious way to spend a few hours; locals who have guests visiting; and tourists and newcomers who need an introduction to the downtown area. I guess what I am saying is, this tour is for everyone! J Personally, I had never shopped The Cave or Intershell’s Fish Market, and thanks to the tour, I will be a returning customer at both places.

Because the ‘Taste Gloucester’ tour is a new (and fun!) venture, it is sure to evolve and grow. Patrick, the owner, is open to feedback and ideas. For more information on how to sign up for a tour visit www.tastegloucester.com. Bon appetit!

Hey Joey!
I am a local Rockport/ Gloucester townie who is also blogging!! I have just recently started and have been trying to come up with ways to get more viewers when my best friend told me about your site. I have been off the "facebook" world for awhile so I hadn’t heard about your site, but I LOVE IT!! Its really great to see someone highlight the beautiful landscapes and local companies/ events that we all seem to forget about from time to time. Thank you for sharing, it really is a beautiful thing.
I am a 21 year old who is trying to make a conscious effort to help guide the world to live in a more sustainable way. A lot of people think its really tough to "go green" but I am here to show & help others how easy it can be! When I graduated from Rockport High School in 2008, I attended The School Of Fashion Design on Newbury St. that fall, thinking I was going to be the next big designer. The Newbury St. style, with oversize bags, glasses, and coffees seemed to be the only thing that mattered and I got swept up into this "world" before I knew it. Bag after bag, coffee after coffee I soon realized, this isn’t what I’m supposed to be doing. These things aren’t helping anyone, who is really benefiting from my designs? I quickly learned that sewing and design were my passions, but the "fashion world" was not.
I now work at a yoga center, a farm, and doing retail styling and merchandising to keep my creative juices flowing. I plan to attend North Shore Community College this fall for Environmental Science & Horticulture. I have traveled out west and stayed in an amazing "off the grid" sustainable living community called Earthships in Taos, NM which has opened my eyes so widely to the opportunities we all have to better our selves and our world and how simple it really is!
My blog is a reflection of my journey and passions. It is called Fashion Heels to Carrot Peels and is a Do It Yourself based blog with a focus on sustainability. It has crafts & recipes that are both simple and sustainable.

Cape Ann Harbor Tours Lighthouse Tour From Anthony Marks

Hi Joey
Took the Cape Ann Harbor Tours, lighthouse tour aboard the King
Eider. It’s a  two and a half hour tour that goes around the cape. It
passes six lighthouses and is narrated. The tour is very scenic to say
the least. Everyone had a good time and was friendly. Its a great tour
for visitors as well as locals.
