Memo from Cape Pond Ice

Please be assured: Cape Pond Ice is safe and acceptable – packaged ice inventories were put up before August 15 (since that date production was curtailed, by request of the Mayor’s office, to meet the City’s water crisis) , and surplus ice product is being trucked in from sources outside Gloucester to meet needs of consumers, restaurants and ice accounts through this weekend, to assure adequate safe ice supplies. Again: Cape Pond Ice is safe to use! – Scott Memhard, President & GM, Cape Pond Ice Company

GMG Q&A- Kate Glass Gloucester Times Photog

Photo of Kate Glass By David Cox

We were honored to have a media slideshow from Kate Glass as one of the participants in the Downtown Gloucester Block Party media presentations last Saturday night.  Recently Kate won an award from the Associated Press News Executive Association for a photo of Anne-Margaret Ferrante and her mom moments after she won the election for 5th Essex District state representative.

Congrats Kate!

Here’s Kate’s GMG Q&A-

How long have you lived in Gloucester?
Sadly, I don’t live in Gloucester, but I’m trying to convince my husband that we should move here! I’ve worked in Gloucester for a little over a year though.

What is your favorite season In Gloucester?
Fall. The weather is still beautiful and easier to enjoy without all the summer traffic.

Do you have any secret outdoor spots in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?

I don’t think these spots are much of a secret, but I do like Rafe’s Chasm in Magnolia. I also love Folly Cove.

What is your favorite pizza joint in Gloucester?

Andiamos had the best pizza. I was very upset when I found out they closed.

What is your favorite sub shop in Gloucester?
I don’t eat too many subs, but for sandwiches and salads I’d have to say Willow Rest. Gotta be careful there though, because everything looks good!

What place would you go for a romantic dinner in Gloucester?

I liked the food and look of the Franklin when I shot it for the Cape Ann Magazine.

What is your favorite bar in Gloucester?

I like the margaritas at Jalapenos. I am also a fan of the beer at Cape Ann Brewing.

What is your favorite breakfast joint in Gloucester?
Jim’s Bagels, though I am dying to try Sugar Magnolias.

What is your favorite local event in Gloucester?
The Farmers Market and music. The block parties are good too. I never really get to enjoy Fiesta because I’m too busy running around looking for photos!

In the summer do you prefer the beach or to be on a boat?

Definitely the beach. (I get seasick)

Who is your favorite local artist?

That’s a tough one. There’s too many good ones. Jon Conant and the work he’s bringing into the Hive in Rockport is a nice addition to the area.

Which is your favorite local beach?
Good Harbor

Who has the best chowder in town?
Halibut Point

Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?
Clam.

What were your thoughts on The Downtown Block Parties last year?
Love the outdoor dining. Gloucester needs more of that!

What is your favorite local band?

While I have seen some of the local bands, I can’t say I’ve seen enough to answer this one. I do love how all the musicians here show up and play at each other’s gigs.

Nelson’s Ride on Sunday-Starts at Stage Fort Park

The 10th annual Nelson’s Ride will be held at Stage Fort Park on Sunday, Aug. 23 (rain date: Sunday, Aug. 30). Nelson’s Ride is annual slow motorcycle ride in memory of Nelson Selig Sr., who was killed in a motorcycle accident on May 2, 2000, leaving behind his wife Felicia, children Nelson Jr. and Kristin, sisters Melanie and Jeannine, his mother Faye Brophy, his stepfather Bob Brophy, and many good friends.

The annual fundraiser began in August 2000 to raise money for Selig’s two children to attend college; that goal has been reached, and at the family’s request, now raises money for other Essex County families of riders killed in accidents.

Dahlias All Natural Granola At Cape Ann Farmer’s Market

Dahlia is a childhood friend of the Mrs.  I caught up with her at The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market yesterday where she was selling her all natural granola for the first time in Gloucester.

As a hard core Diabetic she set out to develop something that she could eat that would be tasty and good for you while messing around in the kitchen with her beautiful daughter.  The result is her line of Dahlias All Natural Granola.  Look for the video with Dahlia at 1PM

I asked David if he was trying to compensate for other inadequacies with the huge lens.  Next thing you know he’ll go out and buy himself a convertible corvette. 🙂

All kidding aside, I really appreciate David’s contributions to GMG.  Look for Part I of his slide show from the August Block Party at 8AM today.

It’s a pain in its own little way!

Everywhere I see this mistake. I’m no grammar expert, but I know my it’s and its! I notice it in newspapers, magazines,articles-all over!

“It’s” is the contraction of “it is”, and “its” is ownership. For example- “It’s going to rain” means it is going to rain.

“The weather and its effects will determine if we have the party or not.”  This “its” is like “his” or “her” except with objects.

Just a little annoyance.     —Sharon

Now I’ll really have to watch my dangling participle! Heehee

David H. Montgomery Studio and Fine Art Gallery Exhibition Opening and Reception

From Kat Valentine-

An opening reception for an exhibition of portraits and marine paintings by Gloucester native David Montgomery is being held Sunday, August 23 from 2-6 pm in the artist’s studio and art gallery at Montgomery Boatyard.

This special exhibition coincides with the on-going celebration of the 100th anniversary of the boatyard located at Montgomery’s Cove on the Annisquam. David Montgomery’s grandfather, Nicholas, started building boats here in September 1908. A family tradition carried on by Nick’s son and David’s father, Herbert.

Thus, many Cape Ann residents know David Montgomery as a third generation boat builder, who, for some thirty years, crafted one-of-a-kind pleasure boats; fishing boats; and the locally-famous fish-class cat boats.

What few knew was that David was also a fine artist, equally skilled in the mediums of charcoal and paint. In 2005, David put away his boat building tools and decided to become a full-time painter. Now instead of painting boat bottoms, David paints boats on canvas, often they are the very boats he built. David also is a gifted portrait artist, praised for capturing a likeness, as well as for portraying something of the character and personality of his sitter.

His drawing is not just mechanically correct, he is able to imbue his work with an emotional quality that gives it a sense of life. The artist’s nature and deep appreciation of his hometown also comes through as there is a sense of stillness and quietude in all his work.

“Growing up in my grandfather’s boatyard, I have always had a love of the shapes of boats. At the same time, I had an innate love of painting, starting with my earliest exposures to Norman Rockwell and N. C. Wyeth, and later the harbor scenes of Emil Gruppé and paintings of John Singer Sargent. Now, after thirty years of building boats, I get equal joy out of rendering their shapes with brush and paint on canvas (and it doesn’t hurt my back),” says Montgomery.

“I feel very privileged to live in an area with such a rich artistic heritage, one that continues to this day, and to be able to paint with such great Cape Ann artists as Betty Lou Schlemm, Jeff Weaver, and childhood-friend David Curtis.”

All are welcome to attend the opening reception on August 23 from 2 to 6 pm, and to visit the exhibition during regular gallery hours on Saturdays from 1-5 pm at 29 Ferry Street. The gallery will be closed on Saturday, August 22. For more information: 978.283.0262 or dhm@davidhmontgomery.com
