During St. Peter’s Fiesta on Wednesday, June 22nd through Sunday, June 26th, two of Gloucester’s West End venues in the heart of all of Fiesta’s happenings offer up a host of different events to entertain, enrich and enlighten Fiesta-goers.
The Cape Ann Community Cinema (CACC) at 21 Main Street has two films.
Sam Hartson’s new documentary entitled “This Is Fiesta” makes its debut, with shows Wednesday through Sunday at 5:00pm. Hartson is best-known for his “Celebrate Gloucester” concert film.
Also, Gloucester native Sal Zerilli’s documentary about The Fort Neighborhood called “No Pretty Prayer” returns, with shows Wednesday through Friday at 7:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30pm and 7:00pm. The film sold out every show at its CACC premiere this winter.
Friday at 9:00pm, the Cinema’s “Opera On The Island” program presents (in glorious HD) Giuseppi Verdi’s “La Traviata” from Milan’s La Scala.
Saturday at 9:00pm, The Earl Foote Band hits the stage for a rare appearance. Foote is half of the Cape Ann favorites Earl & Arch, creators of the essence of Gloucester song “Gloucester ‘Til The End.”

Across the street at The Annie at 1 Washington Street in Gloucester, the Henry Allen TheatreWorks Cape Ann production of “Greasy Pole: The Musical!” concludes its run. The show is a funny, bright and poignant 45-minute musical history of the Fiesta sporting event known as The Greasy Pole, in which competitors, known as “walkers,” attempt to traverse a greased-up 45-foot telephone suspended off the end of a platform in Gloucester Harbor off of Pavilion Beach. Henry Allen of The Annie and Keith Palazzola wrote the book, and Rob Newton of the CACC and Kitt Cox wrote the music and lyrics. The show runs Thursday at 6:30pm & 7:30pm, Friday at 6:00pm & 7:00pm, Saturday at 2:00pm, 3:00pm, 6:00pm & 7:00pm and Sunday at 7:00pm, 8:00pm, 9:00pm & 10:00pm. I don’t know how energetic that video is, but I thought it captured more of an epic moment. That feeling that so few know when they’re carried on the shoulders of their friends, lifting that once-seemingly unattainable flag high into the air and realizing they’ve earned a incredible achievement and can now be called a champ. What must he have been thinking, feeling. His mind, likely abuzz with euphoria and optimism and thoughts of what comes next. Fused permanently into Fiesta history and united with nearly 100 years of champions and culture. Only a select few know what it’s like to ride down Fiesta’s main artery and down the fort into the heart of that incredible Fiesta energy.
That’s what I tried to capture in “This is Fiesta”. It’s an understanding of Gloucester on that tremendous weekend. A perspective, a feeling. An emotion. There’s something in the air in Gloucester that just seems to overflow and pour into the streets of the hot and humid city in late June. The people are happier, electricity flows through their veins as well as through the lights around the altar, the core of St. Peter’s celebration that continually pumps music and excitement from its speakers and from the voices of hundreds of young guys and girls whose screaming voices can be heard miles away as they pay enormous amounts of money to ride and play at the carnival. Fiesta is less an event and more an experience, and everyone experiences it differently. So the film offers a different perspective and serves as an inspiration to really explore the events of this magnanimous cultural spectacle that is entirely unique to the fishing port. It encourages the audience to want to know more and to make their fiesta experience an original and memorable one.

The Super Bowl. The World Series. The Stanley Cup. Nope – never heard of ’em. We do know that as winter starts to come to a close, it’s time to celebrate, not only because it’s no longer necessary to chip the caked salt from your shoes every night, but because Academy Awards Night is imminent.
The Cinema’s annual WICKED AWESOME OSCARS PARTY is this Sunday the 27th, with doors opening at 7:30pm. Guests will get to vote on the 7 major categories, and one winner of a private movie party will be chosen at random from the field of most-right predictions. The Party is free to attend, with a suggested donation of $10.00 to benefit the Cinema.
The Oscar-nominated short films will be playing all weekend: the Animated shorts on Friday the 25th at 7:30pm, Saturday the 26th at 5:00pm and Sunday the 27th at 4:00pm; the Live Action shorts Friday the 25th at 5:00pm, Saturday the 26th at 7:30pm and Sunday the 27th at 5:30pm. The new documentary, THE HARMONY GAME, about the making of Simon and Garfunkel’s legendary 1971 album, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," will screen on Thursday the 24th at 7:30pm for a special one-night-only engagement. We do our very best to keep prices low (we have the lowest concession prices anywhere), but from time-to-time, we must adjust for inflation. The BrainCandy Family FilmFest @ the CACC Gloucester, MA (February, 2011)
The Cape Ann Community Cinema and The Brain Candy Project have teamed up to present a special on-going film festival that explores the foundations of American Family Cinema. Proceeds will benefit the The Brain Candy Project, a Cape Ann charity that supports parents who are living in hospitals with their critically ill children.

Sal Zerilli grew up “down the fort” during the 70’s and 80’s. He moved away, but held on tight to the love for his unique neighborhood of close-knit families and Italian traditions. Two years ago, fearful that the slow but imminent process of gentrification of his beloved fort would destroy its charm, Sal decided to preserve a bit of the precious history.
His documentary, “No Pretty Prayer” is a touching documentary of people and place. Each show at the Cape Ann Community Cinema has sold out. I saw it last night with Joanne (GMG’s own)who grew up as a non-Italian down the fort. Please-if you get a chance, catch this film. It’s a bit of Gloucester history that everyone should see. Saturday, Oct. 9 features a trio of special filmmaker events: the free screening of the the documentary about Gloucester poet Charles Olson, “Polis Is This” (Sat. Oct. 9 @ 3:00pm, CACC). The screening part of the Charles Olson Centennial celebration taking place all over Gloucester for two weeks in October, and film director Henry Ferrini will host; the fishing industry is on the menu in “Truth: Fishing Crisis Or Government Mismanagement?” (Sat. Oct. 9 @ 5:00pm) when director Brian Loftes is joined by representatives from the local fishing industry in what is sure to be a spirited discussion; “Handsome Harry” (Sat. Oct. 9 @ 7:30pm) director Bette Gordon will discuss her psychological thriller and her storied career in filmmaking.

“Orgasm, Inc.” (Sun. Oct. 10 @ 2:00pm, CACC) features director Liz Canner live, talking about making her documentary about Big Pharma’s relentless quest for a “Viagra for women.”
“Hibakusha” (Sun. Oct. 10 @ 4:30pm, CACC) is the haunting retelling of stories of the Japanese, Korean and American survivors of the atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Director David Rothauser will present.
The Cinema has a great selection of organic popcorn, locally-brewed cane sodas and fair trade chocolate bars (and a frozen chocolate-covered banana that is to plotz for).
