Last Night’s Taste of Cape Ann
As host to the fantastic Taste of Cape Ann, the Cruiseport Gloucester was the place to be last night!
We went….and we tasted.
What a tremendous collection of Cape Ann’s finest purveyors, establishments, and eateries serving up some delicious food, decadent treats, and a choice selection of beverages…all in the name of a fantastic cause. Can you say, “Win, Win”? Many excellent raffle items also helped to raise more money and give other local businesses the opportunity to get involved in this tremendous event.
All ticket sales will go towards supporting Cape Ann YMCA Teen Service Trips to New Orleans, Navajo Nation, and Nicaragua. I’m not sure I can think of a better learning opportunity for our community’s youth than providing them the chance to help communities that are in dire need. It is worth mentioning that I couldn’t have been more impressed by the students that were in attendance to represent the YMCA last night. They were enthusiastic, incredibly helpful, and wonderfully polite. Several times throughout the evening I was asked, “Is there anything I can do for you?” and they were right there to remove plates from tables, tidy the function space, and offer friendly smiles. Great job, kids! Way to represent!

Farmer John’s Farm Stand In Essex makes The News
Farmer John Kusulas was interviewed on WBZ News Radio 1030, Mary Blake News Anchor.
Link to interview Here. or read below.
Interview: “
Annie Fathergill, an artist from Marblehead, recently stopped by John’s Farm Stand to pick up some local produce. To her surprise, she received a tutorial on tomatoes. Kusulas took her over to a section of his stand and pointed. “This is what you call an Heirloom tomato. Do you know what an Heirloom tomato is?” he asked. When Fathergill admitted she didn’t, Kusulas explained. “Heirloom tomatoes are the original tomatoes, the way they used to be. Ugly as sin, but when man took over, they made it nice and pretty but they took away the taste,” he laughed.
He also treats many of his first time customers to raw corn. “When they tell me they’ve never had raw corn, I have ’em tasting uncooked corn. I just peel it open and I let them taste it and they can’t believe how sweet the corn is,” he said.
“You have to lean over and smell his fresh peaches before you buy one, and a taste is even better. Kusulas also has an answer for you if you can’t decide. “I have a little knife in my pocket. I take it out and I cut a piece and let the people taste it, and they realize once they taste it, they like it and so they buy it,” he said.
Kusulas is 72, and now retired. He left Greece at the age of 12, and spent most of his life in New York City. He worked in nightclubs as Maitre-D, and fondly remembers customers like Harry Belafonte and Anthony Quinn.
At other times in his life he owned a restaurant, a factory, and even once owned a donut shop. He says he loves this latest endeavor. “Instead of sitting home and nagging my wife, or my wife nagging me, I’m down at the farm stand and having a good time with the public,” he joked.
At his counter, he invariably has a greeting for his customers. “I always say how many, and they look at me like am I crazy or not, and I say, how many pies, I’m talking about pies,” he chuckled. John Kusulas is also known locally as the Pie Guy. He sells 14 varieties, everything from Apple to Lemon to Pecan and Pumpkin Pie.”
While his stand is stocked with summer fruits and vegetables, there is one sign that fall is coming. The first local apples are now on display, too.

13th Annual Wine Tasting and Auction at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum
Len Burgess submits-
IT WAS A BIG SUCCESS FRIDAY NIGHT… at the13th Annual Wine Tasting and Auction at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum. What an event! Over forty donations from local businesses, artists, and friends went in the silent auction. Another eight items went in the live auction handled superbly by Essex auctioneer Michael March. All of this was accompanied by a wine tasting organized by Chebacco Market and goodies from Tim Hopkins Catering and Lark Fine Foods. It was gratifying to see many familiar faces and seemingly just as many new faces with all having a great time. We are looking forward to next year’s event already! –Lee Spence

More of a Good Thing: Fall Fest @ Mile Marker One
Both Donna and Joey already posted some fantastic photos from this weekend’s Fall Festival at Mile Marker One, but it was such a great event, that more can’t hurt. Mile Marker One, Marshall’s Farm Stand, and The Bridge pulled off a fantastic afternoon despite some threatening weather.
The city of Gloucester provided some pretty awesome vehicles including Fire Engine 3, a police Hummer, an ATV, and even a Coast Guard Vessel. That’s pretty much all my boys needed to make a day of it, but the pony rides, face painting, bouncy houses, awesome vendors, pretty yummy Bloody Marys, gelato, the Sam Adams Brewery Oktoberfest Beer Hoisting Competition (what?), and some pretty sweet alpacas made it all that much more fun. And…that was by no means all that the event had to offer.
A true collaboration of forces to pull off yet another fantastic family event here in our great city. Thanks to all! Put this one on your calendar for next year for sure.

Hey Joey,
My ten year old son Daniel and his friend Caleb Grace caught a Triggerfish today inside Lanes Cove. They were watching him yesterday and calling it the “mystery fish”. Today they went back and managed to find and catch him! Caleb’s Dad took one look at the photos and immediately identified it as a triggerfish. When I googled triggerfish and Gloucester the search took me to GMG so I thought I’d share… (They set it free after the pics)

Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay
Last Thursday it was great fun to see the game at Fenway. Red Sox beating Tampa Bay 11-1…Sox getting 16 hits and scoring all those runs with a lineup of mostly young players that may well be part of the future for the Sox. It was a surprise to see the park nearly full with fans having a great time after the season we have had. Two of the youngsters got their first major league home runs, with Castillo just missing his second by about a foot high off the monster, and Vazquez adding three other hits to go 4 for 4 at the plate. We even saw Koji looking like last year closing out the game. In all there were seven rookies in the game. It was just a fun night!
