GREAT MARSH IN THE LIFTING FOG

Essex Salt Marsh Great Marsh Panorama ©Kim Smith 2015Driving past the Essex Salt Marsh during Tuesday’s dissipating fog, I could not help but stop to take a panorama. The view reminded me of a photo from this past March 12th, a sight I’m not quite ready to embrace. Can’t it be warm and balmy for another month, oh please Weather Goddess, just one more month!essex-salt-marsh-©kim-smith-2015

As we were talking about salt marshes on a recent podcast, the following is information provided by the Massachusetts Bays Program:

The Essex Salt Marsh is part of the 17,000 acre Great Marsh that extends from Cape Ann into New Hampshire. Salt marshes are found in coastal areas. These unique ecosystems are formed within protective estuaries and support numerous plants and animals. Salt marshes are among the most productive lands on earth, outcompeting even the best-managed farms. Two-thirds of all marine fish and shellfish depend on salt marshes during some portion of their lives.

Salt marshes are divided into two general vegetation zones. The Low Marsh is flooded twice daily by the incoming tide and is dominated by Spartina alternifolia (low salt marsh grass). The High Marsh is flooded sporadically and is dominated by Spartina patens (high salt marsh grass). Salt marshes contain tidal creeks, pools, and islands of high ground, and serve as highly efficient pollution filters.

Nationwide, vast areas of salt marsh have been destroyed by filling, dredging, and developing upland areas. The Great Marsh has escaped much of this destruction, but it is impacted by pollution runoff and mosquito control ditches built in the 1930s, and by road and rail crossings, which restrict tidal flows to upstream marshes.

In The Battle For Most Picturesque Photo Location Who You Got Between The Burnham House In Essex and Motif No 1 and The Paint Factory

So Anthony Marks Photo This Morning Of The Burnham House Got Me To Thinking…

In The Battle For More Picturesque Photo Location Who You Got Between The Burnham House In Essex and Motif No 1 in Rockport and The Paint Factory in Gloucester.

At One Time I might have said the Paint Factory but it’s such a mess now you’d have to put it out of the running.   The Burnham House In Essex has the Natural surroundings thing going for it.  Rockport’s Motif No 1 is nice in it’s own right and probably has the most world wide cache.

Model Snoop Maddie Mad displays the latest canvas wrap for sale.  $135 All ready to hang.  No expensive framing required.  This is undoubtedly my favorite photo from 2012.

often times when you buy a print or piece of art you bring it to the framer only to find out it costs 2-5 times what you paid for the print to get it framed.  Not so with these killer canvas wraps.  This looks like a painting.

the last two sold within hours.

Burnham House and Motif # 1 Questions from Claire Higgins

Hi, Joey. Do you happen to know what year the Rockport Fishing Shack (aka Motif No. 1) was built? Also, do you know when the Burnham house

(aka Motif #2), on Route 133, was built? Also, I’ve seen it referred to as both the Mary Burnham House and the Mabel Burnham House. Do you know which is correct?

Please let me know. Thank you very much.

 Sincerely,

 Clare Higgins

I have never ever in my life been more ferociously attacked and eaten alive by mosquitoes as I did this morning capturing this shot.  I drove past it at first but had to loop back.  The water was so still, the tide was just right, the light just beginning to peek through.

The mosquitoes were insane I tell you.  I’m still itching. Hit this one up larger.  I love the reflection of the house and the clouds in the sky reflecting in the water.  No brainer, had to get out of the truck and set up the shot, right?
