Art Longwood Books
The other day I was walking in Rockport on my way to photograph a couple of second-hand stores for my ongoing series, and to my surprise, I discovered two more stores to add to my list!
The first one, which I will profile today, is Art Longwood Books (33 Broadway #3), which specializes in “used books in art, design, and other subjects.” Although they specialize in books on the visual arts, they are buying in all subjects. The business originally opened in Cambridge, MA in 2003 and moved to Rockport in May of this year. It will be open year-round, Thursday-Saturday 10-5, Sunday 12-5 (Monday and Tuesday by appointment). The store isn’t not really obvious from the road, but there is a sign in front of the house (see photo above) behind which the actual store is found:
The interior is a cozy space, a sort of bibliophile’s dream hideout:
Jeffrey Postel and Sadie Dudley are the couple who run the store. Although they only moved to Rockport relatively recently, they have had connections in the are for a long time, including a business relationship with fellow seller of used books Bob Ritchie of Dogtown Books (profiled earlier in this series).
The other store which I discovered that day was Main and Pier, an antique store that I will cover in the next post in this series!

Annisquam Exchange
A visit to the Annisquam Exchange (32 Leonard St., Annisquam) takes you out of the more frequented areas of Gloucester and Rockport and into the beautiful, historic, small-town atmosphere of Annisquam. Not that downtown Gloucester and Rockport aren’t charming, but Annisquam seems to me to have an even more magical air about it.
The Exchange is a consignment store that sells antiques, china, silver and collectibles (as described on their website), as well as some other cards, souvenirs, tee-shirts, etc. It is open from May to October, with hours that vary according to the season, clearly laid out on the website.
Here are a few photos from my visit!
Video: Sunset Sail Aboard the Gorgeous Schooner Thomas E. Lannon
Many thanks to Captains Tom and Heath Ellis, Kay Ellis, Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Paul Giacalone for hosting the 4th Annual Good Morning Gloucester Sunset Cruise aboard the elegant Schooner Thomas E. Lannon. Old friends and new enjoyed the beautiful harbor views, the superb cocktails and aged rum provided by Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Cuban cigars from Paul Giacalone. We almost didn’t have Joey aboard as a lobster boat came in late, but the Ellis’s Zodiac provided last minute transport to the schooner.
I had never filmed on a schooner, or any boat for that matter, and it was So Much Fun. I cannot wait to try it again!! Admittedly, I’ve only been on a boat less than half a dozen times (excluding the ferry to and from Martha’s Vineyard) and think I have been missing out on way too much. Thanks again Joey, Tom, Kay, Heath, Bob, Kathryn, Paul, and Ship’s Crew for a great night of fun and beauty aboard the gorgeous Schooner Lannon!

Seafood Throwdown, Farmers Market, Live Music on Schooners and in the Streets. It’s still Summer folks!

Can you feel it? People trying to pack a whole summer into the last week before school starts, which seems to get earlier every year. It feels like there’s so much going on that every choice we make effectively says “No” to a dozen other things we’d like to do. Take today for instance. Live music starts at 11:30am at Stage Fort Park and continues into the night at restaurants, clubs, @ Shalin Liu, on schooners and in the streets. See the full live music schedule here.
Just in case that’s not enough for you, there’s also the Farmer’s Market at Stage Fort Park from 3-6:30 and today you can catch NAMA’s only Gloucester-based Seafood Throwdown of the year at 4:30 featuring a showdown between 2012 HarvestFest champs Gloucester’s Willow Rest and 2008 Genoa World Pesto champs Beverly’s Prides Osteria. Spectators get to taste the food so you really don’t want to miss this one!
See how much fun these Seafood Throwdowns are in this video by Joey from the 2010 epic rematch between Passports & Dog Bar.
Canon C100 ~ New Awesome Camera for Cape Ann TV?

Rare Footage of a Luna Moth Taking Flight
Beauty on the Wing ~ A Luna Moth takes Flight
My friend James, the facilities director at Willowdale Estate, sent a photo of a newly emerged moth on Sunday afternoon. He initially thought it was a paper napkin stuck to one of the lampposts, but upon inspection, discovered that it was a Luna Moth (Actias luna). With high hopes the moth would still be there, I dropped everything and raced over to Willowdale to photograph and film the moth. It is not that the moths are particularly rare, but that they are most often seen in flight at night. Lucky me, to have had such a wonderful encounter with one of the most beautiful moths in all the world!
The Willowdale Luna Moth is a male of the species; you can tell by his bushy and feathery plumosa (or antennae). The female’s antennae are more thread-like. Notice too, just before he takes flight, how his body vibrates, which helps warm and energize the wings in preparation for flying.
Luna moths are members of the Saturniidae, subfamily Saturniinae. With a wingspan of typically up to four and a half inches, atypically up to seven inches, they are one of North America’s largest moths. Luna Moths are most often seen in the earlier part of summer in our region; this Luna Moth encounter took place on August 11, 2013. Luna Moths, like all members of the Saturn family of moths, eclose without mouthparts. They emerge solely to mate and deposit eggs of the next generation and live for only about one week.
Luna Moth larvae (caterpillars) feed on wide variety of broadleaf plants and different geological populations of Luna Moths are adapted to different hostplants. Northernmost populations most often feed on white birch (Betula papyrifera). More southerly populations feed on persimmon (Diospyros virginiana), sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua), hickories (Carya), walnuts (Juglans), and sumacs (Rhus).
The damage done by Luna Moth caterpillars on host trees is never significant enough to harm the host trees. Please don’t spray your trees with pesticides or herbicides!
A note about the music playing in the background ~
Ave Maria, Ellens Gesang III, D. 839, No 6, 1852, was composed by Franz Schubert in 1852 and is a setting of seven songs from Walter Scotts epic poem The Lady of the Lake. Performed by Barbara Bonney.

Artists Spotlight Event Tuesday Night at Willowdale Estate
Join us as we feature two accomplished artists that are very close to the Willowdale Estate family. Showing for one night only!
Jay Forsythe graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. With a background in graffiti, his current work is about engaging with the idea that traditional methods of art making can lead to a deeper understanding of formulating new processes. Once traditional methods are understood these methods act as a guide to explore and discover uncharted areas.
Audi Souza is an artist working primarily in acyrlics. Her focus is the beauty of the landscape and figures in that landscape. She has her BFA from Montserrat College of Art and studied abroad with the college in Viterbo, Italy in 2000. She then retuned to Italy in 2003, this time in Trieste, where she studied and painted for nine months. Since then she has been painting here in New England and lives in Gloucester, Ma.
Artist Spotlight- Tara White Studio
Hello,
My name is Tara White and I am a local artist who specializes in polymer clay ornaments and jewelry. I recently started following your blog through WordPress, where I have my own blog. I wanted to find out if you ever write posts that feature local artists. If so, I would be very interested in being featured. I have been investing more and more of my time in promoting myself and I know that you have a very faithful following. I know that it would be beneficial to have even the smallest mention. I hope this is not too forward, but I figured it can’t hurt to ask! I really look forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Tara White

Roomba Shark Cat, Hammerhead Sharky Ferocious Pit Bull, and Baby Duck
Although Shark Week is officially over, I can’t resist one more video featuring Shark Cat, Sharky the Ferocious Pit Bull, and a baby duck who appears to want to go for ride with Shark Cat on the roomba.
Sista Felicia and Peter Van Ness on Aurelia Nelson’s Curtain Up Sunday 9am 104.9 FM

Well … Aurelia Nelson found a clever way to host Sista Felicia on her North Shore104.9 radio show Curtain Up that features guests in music and theatre. But it wasn’t much of a stretch. Anyone who’s ever seen Felicia in the kitchen knows that she puts on a great show. She’s got star quality!

So get up early enough tomorrow (Sunday) to catch Aurelia Nelson interview Sista Felicia about her new cookbook at 9am and you’ll also get to hear Peter talk about how our Fall concert series is reviving The Larcom Theatre in Beverly.
In the meantime, you can bop down to the Waterfront Festival and check out Sista Felicia’s tent.
Watching her put the sides on is a good show in and of itself.
Local stars going over the bridge to Beverly this fall
There’s a hidden gem down the road in Beverly: The Larcom Theatre. Opened in 1912 (the same year as Fenway Park) featuring Vaudeville shows, The Larcom’s initial advertising boasted, “Lit Completely by Electricity.” Fully restored in 1985, the Larcom Theatre became a second home to Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Company, which closed in May 2012.
In April 2013, Vickie and I presented Henri Smith at the Larcom Theatre to a sold-out crowd, many of whom had never before set foot in the theatre. We fell in love with the Larcom the minute we walked in, checked the acoustics and told one of the owners (David Bull, star of Le Grand David) that we’d like to present lots of concerts in this acoustically magical theatre…
So, we begin with a 2013 Fall Music Series featuring Gloucester legend Allen Estes and his new Band on October 5 with Dave Foley’s Fabulous Mustangs opening, The Slide Brothers on November 2 with Gloucester’s Michael Thomas Doyle opening, and A New Orleans Christmas with Henri Smith on December 14. We’re working on another six shows for late winter and spring of 2014 and will announce them in the not-too-distant future.
These shows will sell out quickly, so we’re giving FOBs first crack the best seats. Here’s where you can get tickets:
ALLEN ESTES
SLIDE BROTHERS
HENRI SMITH CHRISTMAS
The last time Allen Estes performed with a full band they nearly sold out the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford, which has more than twice as many seats.
The Slide Brothers are the greatest living musicians who embody the Sacred Steel tradition. The joyous music these legendary artists create extends far beyond scared steel to encompass blues, rock and soul all celebrated with a sound that is uniquely their own. This is their only New England show this year.
Henri Smith sold out the Larcom in April. Plus he sold out the 2012 Mardi Gras show in Gloucester and was the headliner for the 1000+ Celebrate Gloucester crowd in 2010.
I know it seems like you’ve got lots of time, but don’t wait to get good seats to these shows in one of the most beautiful, acoustically perfect venues north of Boston.
