The Bluefin Blowout Raised $366,050 for The Alzheimer’s Association!

$366,050. Knowing how passionate and dedicated they are…and knowing they won’t stop until there’s a cure… I guess I shouldn’t be surprised….but, yet I was. This group….this amazing and determined group….supported, celebrated, and loved by so many generous friends, sponsors, captains/crews, advertisers, and family members…. knocked it completely out of the park.

Last night, gathered at the Beauport Hotel, the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group presented a check to the Alzheimer’s Association.

With their massive efforts and unyielding generosity (both theirs and that of those who support them) they managed to raise a surreal $366,050 during this year’s Bluefin Blowout to help #endalz. That’s more than half a million in just two years alone….not to mention the six previous tournaments! I am forever, completely in awe of what they do and by the support that others give to them. Those who give gather. These people could move mountains.

Bluefin Blowout Wrap Up

I’m still “reeling” after a week’s worth of Bluefin Blowout events. You could not ask for a better collection of people to be gathered in one place for the sake of raising a ton of money for a cause near and dear to the hearts of so many….and certainly theirs. The Lyon-Waugh Auto Group and tournament founders,  Drew Hale and Rob Bouley, have gathered an incredible array of generous sponsors, volunteers, exhibitors, donors, and Captains and Crews...that also happen to rival the most fun of any guest list I challenge you to find!! With a massive amount of heart, passion, and determination they (most certainly Cidalia Schwartz and Kruti Kansara) have created an event that grows exponentially each year. It’s success can surely be measured in the amount of money raised for the Alzheimer’s Association…. at least $320,000 this year and close to $500,000 in just two years alone (not to mention the 6 previous years) ….but, also in the giant laughs, amazing memories, and gratitude that all involved feel for being a part of it. This amazing group, led by none other than Warren Waugh, inspire everyone to make a difference. I am continuously in awe of what happens when these people gather together under the tent…and I am humbled to watch them through my lens. Warren remains, to me, the epitome of “Those who give, gather” and I am thankful for the opportunity to be on the periphery of the magic as it happens.

This year’s tournament consisted of 67 boats and brought in 14 fish.

Then winning boat, with a 560 pound bluefin, was the Reel Easy.  They took home a check for $62,800, a BMW from BWM Peabody for one year, and many other prizes. Second place went to The Lady M with a 500 pound fish and 3rd place went to the Painkiller and their 432 pounder.  The Painkiller actually caught a second fish on Saturday and that one weighed in at 368 pounds.

Also on the board were the Karen Lynn, the Lady J., Gypsea, Lion’s Den, Shark Bait, the Frigate, Tonno, Fair Warning, Kelly Ann, and Tuna Taxi with fish weighing in between 410 and 186 pounds.

A record breaking amount of prize money was awarded to the winning boat…..and a record breaking amount of money was raised for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Family Ties is an American sitcom that aired on NBC for seven seasons, premiering on September 22, 1982, and concluding on May 14, 1989. The series, created by Gary David Goldberg, reflected the move in the United States from the cultural liberalism of the 1960s and 1970s to the conservatism of the 1980s.[3] This culture was particularly expressed through the relationship between young Republican Alex P. Keaton (portrayed by Michael J. Fox) and his ex-hippie parents, Steven and Elyse Keaton (portrayed by Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter).

The show won multiple awards, including three consecutive Emmy Awards for Michael J. Fox as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

#endalz.  Trying like hell.

The first ever Bluefin Blowout Family Fun Run and 5K took place at Gloucester’s Stagefort Park yesterday morning.  Runners and walkers rallied by the gazebo before starting out to complete the roundtrip course to Hammond Castle and back to the park. A beautiful course at that.

Adding to the excitement of the day, Becca Pizzi gave the word to kick off the run/walk as the honorary official. Becca Pizzi is a good friend to the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group and has also accomplished the unbelievable feat of running 7 marathons, on 7 continents, in 7 days for the World Marathon Challenge….twice.  Amazing!

If anyone needed a reason to put some pep in their step, the news that the event had already raised close to $60,000 certainly helped! Rockstars!

With yesterday’s successful event in the books, we are all one step closer to enjoying what many people have come to call THE weekend of the summer, the Bluefin Blowout 2018.  This year’s tournament marks year #7 and the goal is to make it the biggest and best yet.  That’s no easy goal considering the success of year’s past, but if anyone can do it it is Lyon-Waugh Auto Group and the tremendous sponsors that add to the tournament’s success each year….not to mention the captains and crews.

With that in mind, mark your calendars NOW for August 2nd-4th and plan on spending some serious time at Cape Ann’s Marina Resort

We hope to raise some big bluefin at weigh-in, raise lots of hands for bidding, raise awareness for #endalz, and raise a huge amount of money for the Alzheimer’s Association …. and maybe raise the roof with DJ Scottie Mac and other live entertainment.  Please join us!

FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS RAISED FOR THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION!

A check for fifty thousand dollars was presented to the Alzheimer’s Association by Warren Waugh of Lyon-Waugh Auto Group and Mayor Sefatia Monday evening. Bluefin Blowout, Final Results

With more than a dozen and close to twenty fish landed in all…and eleven fish presented for official weigh-in…this year’s Bluefin Blowout was one for the record books.  Long story short…if you didn’t make it down this year…be sure to make it next year.  Eight fish came in Friday night (see post here) and three more came in on Saturday…those fish are show in the photos below.

Drew Hale and Rob Bouley were, as always, a huge presence and an integral part of the event’s massive success.  Warren Waugh and his Lyon-Waugh Auto Group team, led by Cidalia Schwartz, took over the reigns (or reels) this year and pulled off four days of back to back tremendous events.  The tournament is clearly geared to the captains and crews who pay for entry, but thanks to a million little (and big) details, the Bluefin Blowout is an event that all of Cape Ann can enjoy in a variety of ways.  Food, drinks, music, vendors, family activities, games, contests, and more make Cape Ann’s Marina Resort the place to be all weekend long.  On that note, anyone would be remiss to not mention Tobin and Drew Dominick, as well as, Joe Loiacano and their entire staff for being truly all hands on deck for this event. It should not go unnoticed just how much effort it takes to pull all of this off.  Scott Marshall, the official Weigh Master from Compass Seafood, worked non-stop to clean the fish for official weigh-in for 4 hours straight on Friday and was back at it on Saturday.   Ipswich Clambake, with some pretty spectacular teamwork, executed some giant meals for some pretty hungry crews. And…of course, Goslings, Titos, and Bud Light kept everyone well hydrated.  A super important…and much appreciated job. DJ Scottie Macthe official voice of the Bluefin Blowout, was there keeping the crowd enthusiastic all weekend long and it wouldn’t be the same without him. Ipswich Bay Cornhole League helped add to the fun during Saturday’s tournament hours.

Not only were the fish big, but the money raised for the Alzheimer’s Foundation was even bigger….and as exciting as it is to watch the giant bluefin back into the dock…at the end of the day, the charity is what matters the most.  In the midst of some fantastic fishing and TONS of laughter…everyone was keenly aware that the real task at hand was to raise that money.  So many people, most notably Warren Waugh of the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group, stepped up BIG time!  I hesitate to list all of the amazing acts of kindness because I know I’ll miss some, but I watched captains donate dollars based on the size of their boats, I watched Captains donate the proceeds from the sale of their fish, and I watched winning captains donate back a portion of their tournament take.  So many sponsors and vendors offered up unbelievably generous items for both the silent and live auctions….and as gifts for the captains and crews.  Captain Steve Mscisz and his family donated their home on Nantucket to the live auction, Anthony Caturano and Tonno Restaurant along with Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken are providing two evenings of culinary perfection to the winning bidders, Lyon-Waugh auctioned off a weekend long Porsche rental to the two top bidders, and Three Lantern Marine and Fishing donated some pretty impressive tuna rods…along with so many other fishing supplies.  Captain TJ Ott also offered up his boat, the Hot Tuna (of Wicked Tuna fame) for a private charter after production ends this season!  The list truly goes on and on.

Several other people and organizations need to be thanked so please take a moment to check out the sponsor page at http://bluefinblowout.com/our-sponsors/http://bluefinblowout.com/our-sponsors/

Monies raised? you may ask…..   Well, the live auction alone raised more than $21,000 for Alzheimer’s!  The silent auction, while I’m not certain of the exact number yet, brought in a substantial amount more.

The money collected for the Tournament Daily Jackpot was $11,600 and 10% of that also went to the Alzheimer’s foundation.

The final results for the Bluefin Blowout look like this:

Sweet Caroline III, Captain Alan Murray and crew. 540 pounds

Took home $15,000 for their 1st place fish as well as a watch and a nautical clock both from Long’s Jewelers and a Zombait Lure.   A two-year lease of an Audi A3…valued at $12,000 thanks to Lyon-Waugh.

Kelly Ann, Captain Mauro Dibacco and crew. 472 pounds

Took home $6500 for their 2nd place fish as well as a watch and a nautical clock both from Long’s Jewelers and a Zombait Lure.  The Kelly Ann also won Friday’s Daily Jackpot equaling $5,000.

Final Offer, Captain Steve Mscisz and crew. 420 pounds

Took home $3750 for their 3rd place fish as well as a watch and a nautical clock both from Long’s Jewelers and a Zombait Lure.

Fat Tuna, Captain Bob Cook and Crew, 396 pounds

Friday’s Bluefin Blowout Results

Weigh-in at this year’s Bluefin Blowout opened at 5:00 last night…with the first boat arriving at the dock around 6:15.  Eight boats and eight recorded weights later, and it was very close to 10:00 pm.  The boats arrived back at Cape Ann’s Marina Resort one after the other, all evening long.

This year’s entries are off to an unbelievable start with more than a dozen fish already on ice and some guaranteed fish hitting the scale tomorrow as well.

Friday’s Results look like this:
