“Gloucester’s Mayor, Sefatia Romeo Theken, took the Arts Challenge”
Mayor Romeo Theken announced that the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) Mayor’s Arts Challenge videos are ready to view. Which cities and towns entered? The MCC uploaded short videos from Boston, Easthampton, Fitchburg, Gloucester, Newburyport, North Adams, Pittsfield, Salem, and Springfield for the MCC’s 2016 Mayors Arts Challenge. The last challenge was in 2010. After November 1st – videos from 3 cities with the most “thumbs-up” are sent to the MCC selection panel, so click the thumbs up to help!

Greg and Gold Star Mom Anita Coullard Dziedzic present a $2000 check to Cape Ann Veterans Services- honoring her son Sgt David J Coullard by helping returning veterans
Anita’s son David served in the Marine Corps and was killed in action on August 1, 2005. She and her husband, Greg, help returning veterans. They spoke about her son and some of the projects they’ve supported. Good Morning Gloucester readers may remember Anita’s joy in finding a Paul Frontiero “Art, Rocks!”, and donating a flag to the Boulevard. Anita’s mom was born in Gloucester in 1917; her Uncle was dear friends with Pauline Bresnahan’s father.
Adam Curcuru and the veterans office volunteers discussed projects that the Cape Ann Veterans Services is involved with. Stories were shared and a few tears. It was all very inspiring. We passed around a copy of the children’s book that is going to all the elementary school classes for Veterans Day. We spent time admiring the Welcome Home to Cape Ann Veterans Gift Packages, a program “designed to show Cape Ann’s appreciation for our returning veterans and let them know that Cape Ann supports them in this process of transitioning out of the military and back into our community.”
With or without the Gloucester family connections, I believe that Anita and Greg are so impressed by the Cape Ann Veterans Services that they would be delighted to work together anyhow. How nice that Cape Ann Veterans Services is included.

Gloucester schools consolidation: public discussion update Monday at Veterans Elementary 6:30PM
The School Committee’s consolidation concept was approved for next steps. From the Gloucester Daily Times announcement for the next two meetings: “The plan calls for consolidating East Gloucester and Veterans Memorial schools into a new building, likely on a 43-acre site in Swinson’s Field and The Pines or — after more recent talks — on an extended site around the current East Gloucester School and extending down to East Main Street.”
EGS and Veterans Memorial Consolidation Public Forum: Monday October 17
Ward 1, @Veterans Elementary, 6:30PM
School Committee with City Council: Tuesday, October 18
O’Maley Innovation Library, 7pm, “Not a public hearing. Workshop to glean needed financial and other information for future school building plans. Discussion will include presentations on school needs and on city financial projections.”
Questions and comments swirled from the meeting at East Gloucester Elementary school. The Scaling Up conference brought to mind further points of discussion.
Some topics all sides: the budget; swing space; use existing footprints; build one at a time; build all at once; Swinson’s Field and The Pines; design; wildlife; waterways; traffic patterns (East Main after school gets out is “mightily backed up”); the possible historic designation of Rocky Neck; Gloucester’s Green Community designation; Get Fit walk to school movement; Tiny House Tiny Community; small schools increase property values; small schools and learning environments; Smartgrowth; Why So Big? Rethinking design concepts and sustainable community development; experience; big school will save money; big schools can feel small; the state is paying so much, but not for long; all kids deserve what West Parish students get; etc.

3D Flight of the Monarch Butterflies hosted by Kestrel Educational Adventures
One show only! 5PM tomorrow, Saturday, October 15th. Flight of the Butterflies is featured as part of the 7th annual Doctober Fest Documentary Film Festival at Cape Ann Cinema and is hosted by Kestrel Educational Adventures. “This screening marks the debut of the Cinema’s XpanD 3D system”

Scenes from Ray Hassard’s Cape Ann Plein Air painting event at Rocky Neck
Last night Ray Hassard gave a painting demonstration and talk at Rocky Neck Cultural Center. Hassard is the 2016 Cape Ann Plein Air Awards Judge.
You may recognize some of the artwork on display. Montserrat College of Art Presents: Plein Air – Here and Abroad is installed upstairs at RNCC through November 13th. Artists include faculty, alumni and students. The large painting seen directly behind Ray Hassard’s live demo staging is by Maria Malatesta, Fields #31. Also scheduled through November 13th is Beyond Plein Air, an RNAC member group show installed downstairs in the Studio Gallery. Mary Rhinelander’s Patience beckons.

NEFA at New England Libraries Conference and in Ipswich: meet up Oct 17 calling all artists, creative orgs and biz
Representatives from the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) will be in Massachusetts on the North Shore from Oct 16 – 18 participating and presenting at the annual New England Libraries Conference which will be held in Danvers.
NEFA developed an indexed website for the creative economy called Creative Ground. You may have seen it; there are a couple of Gloucester entries in there.
The directory is free and simple and is for all New England artists, cultural non-profits, and creative businesses.
During this upcoming MA road trip, NEFA offered to give another presentation in our area about CreativeGround. Kerrie Bates in Ipswich stepped up and invited Gloucester and Essex National Heritage to help spread the word to the North Shore. The directory is free. The event is free. Learn more:

Upcycled pallets vs international playground design: one dad’s inspiring backyard ninja course, Stage Fort, and BSA Extraordinary Play
“And on to the zip line. Once again, she has a lot of stuffed animal friends to cheer her on the course today…one-handed over the water bottles, and she makes it no problem…” (the father’s sweet narration)
The inspiring viral video of one dad’s DIY backyard obstacle course for his daughter could easily have been featured in Design Museum Boston‘s excellent Extraordinary Play exhibition which was held at the BSA space, Boston Society of Architecture. Extraordinary Play featured the best international public playground design, mostly big budget projects. Based on the posters, my sons and an older cousin thought the sky playground in City Museum, St. Louis, the Blaxland Riverside Park in Homebush Bay Australia, and the Globe Dokk1 Aarhaus in Denmark look amazing!
We’d visit any of the BSA notable playgrounds in a heartbeat if we traveled nearby: Geopark Stavangar, Norway; Adventure Playground, Berkeley; Parque Gulliver, Valencia, Spain; The Globe Dokk1, Aarhaus, Denmark; Maggie Daley Park, Chicago; and Brooklyn Bridge Park, NY. (Scroll below to see those posters.)
Gloucester is lucky to have several good playgrounds. My children loved the gigantic truck, pirate ship and lighthouse at Stage Fort, plus so many paths, boulders and expansive fields and vistas. (I don’t think the sea serpent was there when they were little. We hope they might come back to supplement the excellent swings and climbing structure)
The BSA Space is just across the bridge from the Boston Children’s Museum and alongside the Greenway. The exhibitions are free.
A tip for visitors coming to Massachusetts for the first time is to stop by the BSA lobby to check out the model of the city.
Go before the Freedom Trail! Very helpful- reminded me of the old display at Gettysburg.
