Spotlight on Marty Morgan Pottery
Marty Morgan was a French lit major in college, but a good friend introduced her to the magic of clay and firing. She learned the basics of throwing on the wheel with Frances Trapp at the Boston Museum School. Living in California in the late 60’s she learned to fire gas kilns, did extensive glaze testing and took many workshops at Big Creek Pottery in Santa Cruz, with Daniel Rhodes and other well-known potters.
Returning to the East Coast in 1972 Marty opened a retail crafts gallery and teaching studio, the Works, in Manchester, MA. In 1979 she moved to her present home on the Mill River in Gloucester, turning the garage into a studio and showroom. The studio features her dream kiln, a 65 cubic foot car kiln, which is loaded in the studio and then rolled outside to be fired.
As well as creating her own work, Marty has been very involved in the Cape Ann community, as a founding member and president of the Cape Ann Artisans which has held studio tours twice a year for over 30 years. She is also known as “the bowl lady” for her work helping to organize the Empty Bowl event, an annual fundraiser since 2001 for the Open Door food pantry. Marty says: “After making pots for forty years, I still love it when someone tells me they have to have their coffee in a Marty mug”.
Marty will be holding an Open House at her studio December 7th & 8th, 10 -5 featuring her porcelain mugs, serving pieces, lamps and vases and her latest “quarry vessels” and tile wall sculptures. Stop by for some home-made cookies and holiday cheer.

Hi Joey,
This view is constantly changing. The buffleheads are still here at high tide, but I’m sure they’ll be leaving soon. When the tide is out we get egrets feeding in the little trickle of water left. Last night I was finishing glazing some bowls when the sky turned these amazing colors – wish I could create them on my pots!

Last year we helped make Gloucester the number 3 Arts Destination In the Country in American Style Magazine. This is something we already know obviously but really don’t we deserve to be number one?
With your help and vote it helps the entire community by supporting our local artisans and allowing them another feather in their marketing cap to come visit, check out our vibrant art community and leave some cheddar behind
Like the picture they used in the postcard announcing the contest? You may recognize it as one of mine. Claire Higgins at seARTS did a bang up job with the design.
Anyway lets support our local artists by voting!
Click on the button below to go vote, and thank you for supporting Gloucester and the arts!
I just checked out the contest and it’s easy peasy lemon squeezy. Not to mention you could win five hundred dolla yo!
Let’s Do This!
Here’s the presser from seARTS who with Kristine Fisher and Jackie Ganim DeFalco have been responsible for putting this initiative into play from the beginning.
2012 American Style “Top Arts Destination” Campaign Kicks Off
In 2011 seARTS, working with the arts community, secured the nomination for Cape Ann/Gloucester as a Top 25 Arts Destination by American Style Magazine. Thanks to your votes, we won the #3 spot on the list for small U.S. cities. Voting time is here again, and this year, we want to aim for the #1 spot and increase our visibility as an arts destination.
Securing Gloucester/Cape Ann on this list again this year as one of America’s Top 25 Arts Destinations will elevate Cape Ann on the national stage. We have over 2,000 working artists on Cape Ann and a thriving community that celebrates the arts of all disciplines. After all, our Rocky Neck is the country’s oldest continuous working art colony in the U.S. while Rockport draws visitors all year long!
To achieve this distinction, seARTS is requesting the entire community’s help in spreading the word. This is a city-based ranking, but all of Cape Ann was included in the destination information submitted and the article in the magazine.
There are many ways to help before March 3. Here are some suggestions!
1. Go in right now and vote from your computer, your phone, and your laptop! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3YYDSTL
2. Put the link and/or icon at the bottom of all your emails in the signature line!
3. Use the promotional postcard jpeg in your literature and emails: http://bit.ly/ypN3y0
4. Link to the voting icon http://bit.ly/A3MD3D
5. Blog & Tweet the Survey Link
6. Share with your employees
Having this designation gives all of the cultural organizations and artists and businesses a chance to embed the Award in all their literature and promotion around Cape Ann as a branded arts destination. Please contact seARTS to find out more about how you can do this. info@searts.org 978-281-1222.

This one-night only event will feature a special performance by Mary Callanan and accompanist Brian Patton. Callanan will play the role of Lucy van Pelt in the opening musical production of “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.” There also will be an exclusive guest appearance by Karen MacDonald, director of last year’s hit thriller “The Woman In Black.” She will star in the upcoming production of “Last of the Red Hot Lovers!”
For more information, visit http://www.gloucesterstage.org.
Sorellanza, a Cape Ann women’s chorus directed by Patti Pike, will present a concert of songs filled with hope and light at its spring concert titled “Dreams to wish upon.” The performance includes songs both old and new from near and far in search of that bright morning star that guides travellers. This is the last of three shows. The group will perform on Sunday, April 5 at 4 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Church at 225 Cabot St. in Beverly. Admission is $10. For more information, contact Anne Stevens, 978-281-6417.
Parents and residents are asked to attend a program on Saturday about a topical issue. The program titled “So Sexy so Soon: and What Parents Can Do to Protect their Kids” takes place on April 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at O’Maley Middle School Auditorium featuring Professor Diane E. Levin, an expert on the impact of media on youth. The presentation will be followed by questions and discussion, possible local approaches to the issue. The program is appropriate for teens, older youth and adults. There will be limited child care available by reservation. Call 978-281-2477 to pre-register. Light refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by The Cape Ann School Safety Committee, Gloucester Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Partnership, The Coalition for the Prevention of Domestic Abuse and The Gloucester Bookstore.
Marty Morgan will hold her annual spring open house and sale from April 4 to April 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Her work has an Asian influence this year as she develops new shino glazes, which range from smoky grays to apricot and rust tones. There is little control over the results of firing this particular glaze. Inspired by reading Greg Mortenson’s “Three Cups of Tea,” she will donate half of the price of any set of three small cups to the Central Asia Institute, which is building schools for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan. She also creates dinnerware and serving pieces in stoneware and porcelain as well as trays, vases, lamps, mirrors, landscape tiles and “quarry vessels.” The studio is located at 428 Washington St. on the Mill River in Gloucester. For information, call 978-281-3347.
Franklin Friday Jazz features the Linda Amero Trio this week with Jane Potter on piano and John Turner on bass. The Franklin is at 118 Main St. in Gloucester. The jazz is from 7 to 10 p.m. No cover.

The museum invites members of the community to assist in the identification of the people, places, and events that Lowe captured on film. A catalogue of Lowe images accompanies the exhibition.
