The next stop of the Agnes Martin retrospective will be the Guggenheim Museum, NYC, opening this week Oct 7- January 11, 2017. It’s the same show that was organized by and exhibited at Tate Modern, and just coming from Los Angeles- LACMA.

His photographs document highlights from his visit including City Hall, climbing the tower, the murals, and a Cape Pond Ice tour. The September 24th visit was a full day into night port of call, and coincided with Essex National Heritage Trails & Sails. The welcome volunteers had prepared a list of things to do on that fun and busy Saturday. By 1:30PM, over 1200 Holland America passengers and crew had come through Cruiseport on this second September visit. (That clicker count does not include the package tours booked in advance.)

This nighttime screening is a great chance to review and determine if it’s a good fit for an enrichment daytime screening at O’Maley. Andrew Sullivan’s New York Magazine article, Technology Almost Killed Me, includes “the first one to use the phone pays for lunch” strategy that I first saw in the trailer for this Screenagers documentary. I enjoyed the illustrations for the article–cell phone riffs into famous paintings–and am thankful I read it if only because it reminded me that I still haven’t seen Screenagers. Now I can!

For those interested in conservation right where people live, Essex Heritage and Peabody Essex Museum are co-hosting a daylong conference focused on the big topic of Scaling Up. Local, national and international experts interested in conservation planning and policy will have a chance to share, learn and network. Register on line. So the 2016 Mayors Arts Challenge to tape a video submission highlighting art and culture was announced September 26th.
The deadline is October 14th.
What’s a city to do?
The last Mayors’ Arts Challenge was in 2010. You can view various past submissions on the Massachusetts Cultural Council YouTube channel including Peabody (600 views), Pittsfield (3710 views), and Gloucester (24,877 views). Pittsfield won in 2010.
Guidelines for 2016:
Gloucester is huge on enjoying, boosting and celebrating creative folks working here. Everyone has a phone. Help your artist-friend, business, restaurant, or organization that’s big into the arts.
Snap a photo, shoot some video. Instagram. Facebook. Twitter. No matter what tag it #MaMayorsArtsChallenge #GloucesterMA then share, share, share before October 7th, one week prior to the State’s final deadline. Those tags –or one of them– could be a video.

Councilor Memhard and the City’s school committee hosted a forum on a beautiful September night.
The school committee presentation was briefer than the one at West Parish. The size of the audience was the same. There were repeat attendees and fresh faces. The handout was ambitious and sincere. Various wants and needs expressed were not in concert, but respectful. Councilors Paul Lundberg, Val Gilman, and Council President Joseph Ciolino listened attentively as did Chris Sicuranza from the Office of the Mayor, and Community Development Director Dan Smith. Several teachers currently working at East Gloucester and Veterans elementary schools and the 2 principals were present. Exceptional teachers from both schools made helpful comments. Ruth Flaherty spoke for the EGS staff. Residents and parents shared questions and comments until the scheduled start of the Presidential debates.

The Gloucester Cultural Council is currently accepting applications for grant funding for community-based projects in the arts, humanities and sciences for the FY 2017 round of funding. Each year, organizations, schools and individuals are invited to apply to the Local Cultural Council for funding to support projects that promote rich cultural experiences in the Gloucester community. This year, all applicants must submit their proposals via the new online system and no hard copy applications will be accepted.
The Gloucester Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community. The Gloucester Cultural Council guidelines, project priorities and online applications are available at http://www.mass-culture.org/Gloucester.
