BREAKING: GLOUCESTER STAGE OFFICIAL STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO ISRAEL HOROVITZ ALLEGATIONS

Press statement – November 30, 2017

 

Earlier this month, the Board of the Gloucester Stage Company received information about an allegation of sexual assault by Israel Horovitz. We cancelled plans to produce a Horovitz play in 2018 and agreed that under no circumstances would he continue to serve on the Board, ex officio, as artistic director emeritus. Mr. Horovitz denied the allegation and requested a meeting, but then resigned. We deeply regret that past complaints were mishandled. On behalf of the Board I apologize to the brave women who came forward in 1992 and 1993 but were not heard. We are individually and collectively appalled by the allegations, both old and new. Such behavior cannot be tolerated and our thoughts are with the women who were victimized. We are committed to making sure that GSC is a place where people are safe, free to do their best work, and to speak out without fear of reprisal.

In the New England Premiere of the satirical comedy written and directed by Israel Horovitz, the “babes” in question are four adult women who gather in the Paris apartment of a recently deceased centenarian with whom they all had something important in common: During different times in the long life of the unnamed Lothario, each was his wife or live-in girlfriend. Israel Horovitz, author of more than 70 plays and the artistic director emeritus of GSC, wrote that the play is the second of a trilogy designed to be “confrontations of French and American cultures: American attitude towards love and marriage versus French attitude towards love and marriage.”

The four brilliant actors – Paula Plum (Evvie), Debra Wise (Evelyn), Sarah Hickler (Janice), and Obehi Janice (Marie-Belle) – wring from the volatile premise every possible laugh. To the apartment each brings her own memories and perceptions of the dearly departed, a Sorbonne professor who more closely resembled a cult leader: a glib narcissist who enchanted, deceived, and infuriated his many lovers. In short, when “the babes” get together, there’s plenty to talk about!

The action takes place on a stunning set designed by Jenna McFarland Lord. Complete with floor-to-ceiling modernist paintings (which happen to be for sale – you, the audience member, can buy one!), the imaginatively lit space makes you feel as though you’re on the Left Bank with a canal outside and a patisserie just around the corner. Rugs from Landry & Arcari and sleek furniture from be modern complete the funky-but-chic ambience.

Over a period of twenty-four hours, the four women reveal many dark and hilarious secrets, both about themselves and their departed lover who still holds their hearts. Initial antagonism turns to sororal bonding, and with the help of mysterious spiritual messages from beyond the grave the unlikely quartet turn the corner and bravely face the future.

Out of the Mouths of Babes runs from August 11 through September 2. Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 pm at Gloucester Stage Company, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. For tickets call 978-281-4433 or visit gloucesterstage.com.

Mel Brooks, Terry Gross, Elaine Pagels, Wynton Marsalis, Jack Whitten and 20 others to receive highest NEA and NEH National Medals Sept 22. New Smithsonian National Museum of American History opens Sept 24!

24 NEA National Medal of Arts and  NEH National Humanities Medals will be awarded to artists from our country in a special ceremony on September 22, 2016. NEA and NEH “serve different constituents”. Right. Anyhow, celebrating 24 exciting nominees rather than 12 is great! The event will be live streamed at www.whitehouse.gov/live. Both agencies are celebrating their 50th anniversary and request and receive nearly identical budgets, ie. 146 million FY2015.

Two days after the medal ceremony, the newest Smithsonian museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture,  will open and I’m told it’s a hot ticket.

Rudolfo Anaya (author), Jose Andres (chef), Ron Chernow (author), Louise Gluck (poet), Terry Gross (radio host), Wynton Marsalis (composer/musician- he received an NEA one in 2005), James McBride (author), Louis Menand (author), Elaine Pagels (historian), Prison University Project (San Quentin),  Abraham Verghese (Physician/author), Isabel Wilkerson (journalist)

There are past NEH recipients with Massachusetts ties. A direct Gloucester match includes Hilton Kramer (2004 NEH). I bet Israel Horovitz and Deborah Cramer will be announced one year soon!  Louis Menand to be honored next week wrote about TS Eliot. Prior years there are Gloucester connections like Monuments Men Foundation (NEH 2007/ Walker Hancock.) A wider North Shore net pulls out big names like John Updike/Ipswich (NEH 2003). From the NEH press release: “Since 1996, when the first National Humanities Medal was given, 175 individuals have been honored, inclusive of this year’s recipients. Thirteen organizations have also received medals. A complete list of previous honorees is available at this link:  http://www.neh.gov/about/awards/national-humanities-medals” 

Rudolfo Anaya’s novel Bless Me, Ultima, is a part of the NEA Big Read, grants awarded mostly for one town events with a book that’s pre-selected. Our local  Cape Ann Reads effort will target 4 communities and as Deborah French, Director TOHP Burnham Library comments, “ WE will create one book to be read by four communities!”

Theater and film buffs: hometown scop Israel Horovitz on “My Old Lady”- adapting plays to film Thursday @SawyerLibrary

We’re lucky when artists touch down in their hometown(s). Come meet Israel Horovitz and relish an opportunity to hear him speak about his latest book, My Old Lady: Complete Stage Play and Screenplay With An Essay on Adaptation. Horovitz  has been coming to Gloucester since he was a boy, “brought here by my parents on special days. 70 years and 70 plays later, every day I spend in Gloucester is still very much a special day.” That’s a 2011 quote he gave me for the Rocky Neck marker on the HarborWalk.

I wonder why playwrights have the fancier spelling? The nomenclature of the writing world opted for screenwriter not screenwrighter, and the informal mash up of ‘screenplay’ over the dramatic double  ‘Stage (what?) Play (what else?)’.

Directed by Mr. Horovitz, Gloucester Blue takes place in the attic loft of an old industrial building in The Fort section of Gloucester owned by the upscale Bradford Ellis IV also known as Bummy and his wife Lexi. Working class housepainter Stumpy has been contracted to refurbish the building and he has hired Latham, friend-of-a-friend, to help him complete the job. As the play opens, Stumpy and Latham are hard at work, spackling damaged walls and applying fresh plaster and primer. Out of work for the last six months Latham is grateful for the job. When Lexi shows up with paint color samples, a story of intrigue, seduction, betrayal and money is set into motion in this dark comedy. The New England premiere of Horovitz’s newest Gloucester play has received unanimous rave reviews during its run at Gloucester Stage.

Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 pm. Ticket prices are $28 for all performances. EXTENDED THROUGH OCTOBER 11

Due to overwhelming demand Gloucester Stage has extended the New England Premiere of Israel Horovitz’s Gloucester Blue through Sunday, October 11. Originally scheduled to close on Sunday, October 3, the additional performances are: Sunday, October 4 at 2pm; Wednesday, October 7 through Saturday, October 10 at 7:30 pm and Saturday October 10 and Sunday October 11at 2pm at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA.

Directed by Mr. Horovitz, Gloucester Blue takes place in the attic loft of an old industrial building in The Fort section of Gloucester owned by the upscale Bradford Ellis IV also known as Bummy and his wife Lexi. In Gloucester-speak, it’s The Fort versus Eastern Point. In theatre-speak, I think Gloucester Blue is a really fun evening of theatre.”

Gloucester Stage Founding Artistic Director Horovitz. directs a cast featuring Lewis D. Wheeler and Esme Allen as the upscale couple Bummy and Lexi, and Francisco Solorzano and Gloucester Stage Artistic Director Robert Walsh as housepainters Stumpy and Latham. “One thing I so appreciate about Israel’s work is his intense desire to keep exploring new avenues of style, content, and conflict – all essential pieces of good playwriting,” Walsh, a frequent actor in and director of Horovitz’s work explains, “For as comfortable as he is with dark comedy,Gloucester Blue represents an even newer pursuit of the tools and nuances of that genre’s storytelling components.”

Gloucester Blue is the latest in Horovitz’s series of Gloucester-based plays that include North Shore Fish, Henry Lumper, Park Your Car in Harvard Yard,Fighting Over Beverley and Sins of the Mother, all of which were first produced at Gloucester Stage and went on to successful runs nationally and internationally. “Gloucester Blue has already found audiences in developmental productions in Seattle, Florida’s Delray Beach and New York City,” Horovitz says, “I’m delighted to finally bring this play home to Gloucester.”

A New England premiere of a new play by Israel Horovitz, the founding artistic director of Gloucester Stage, is always an event to celebrate. “Gloucester Blue, ” now playing through October 3rd, is no exception. This incisive and dark comic thriller is propelled by the secret desires that explode from its four characters. The story begins when trust fund babies Lexi and Bradford Ellis hire a housepainter named Stumpy to fix up their luxury Gloucester home. When Stumpy’s regular partner can’t do the job, Stumpy enlists a dubious character named Latham to help him, and that’s when the trouble begins. In no short order, smoldering passions are ignited that quickly turn to unexpected violence. The second act of this two-act play takes you on a roller-coaster ride of twists and turns that you’ll never expect.

The four-person cast brilliantly brings the characters to life. Working their craft on the imaginative set designed by Jenna McFarland Lord, Francisco Solorzano (Stumpy), Robert Walsh (Latham), Lewis D. Wheeler (Bradford Ellis) and Esme Allen (Lexi) create vivid characters that both provoke laughter and make your heart stop with their incendiary revelations. Their interplay is electric as they strive to reveal the darkest secrets of others while concealing their own.

We walked through the door very late last night, at 2:30am, after several delays leaving LAX. I am hoping to have time to look through and post some photos tomorrow after catching up with work.

During the visit with Liv and Matt, my husband Tom was contacted by the Théâtre du Petit Hébertot regarding the use of one of my photos of Rocky Neck in the fog. The theatre company is performing the Israel Horovitz play Park Your Car in Harvard Yard and included the mockup poster in their request. Israel Horovitz’s Red Carpet Special on Cape Ann TV Tonight!

Cape Ann TV is airing  “Israel Horovitz’s ‘My Old Lady’ Red Carpet Special” tonight on Channel 12 at 9 pm. Join the talented and  glamorous Heidi Dallin as she interviews Cape Ann’s A-List who attended last weeks’s advanced screening of “My Old Lady” at the Cape Ann Community Cinema. The movie is directed by Gloucester Stage Company founder Israel Horovitz  and stars Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith. The screening was a benefit for the Gloucester Stage Company.

It is one big party on the red carpet, as Heidi talks to a sea of one name personalities from Cape Ann: Carolyn, Bruce, Ann-Margaret, and Sinikka, just to name a few. She also talks to Gail McCarthy and Desi Smith of the Gloucester Daily Times and Mark Shanahan from the Boston Globe’s ‘Names & Faces’.  The program ends with Israel’s introduction to the movie. He talks about what it is like to make a film in Paris, and working with Maggie Smith and Kevin Kline.
