EMPTY BOWL FUNDRAISER celebrates 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPEN DOOR

Last night our Community came together to pick out some beautiful hand-made bowls and share a simple meal of soup and bread with our neighbors as a reminder that, every night across this country, people stand in line for just that, a bowl of soup, bread and something to drink.  At the end of the night, the bowl goes home as a reminder that, somewhere, someone’s bowl is truly empty.   I’m happy to report there wasn’t an Empty Bowl in the house and lots of funds and awareness were raised for this great cause!  Part of last night’s fundraiser was to celebrate The Open Door‘s 40th Anniversary of serving the Cape Ann Community!

Update: we spotted five or six right whales at 6:30AM just off the shore between Salt Island and Thacher. They remained feeding in the area for 11+ hours. Two crossed past the Rockport side of Long Beach, and back again. They were surprisingly fast at times! Post was updated during the day with more photos and videos. I hope some photogs with professional lens will be sharing soon.

Colorful New Art Exhibit at Rose Baker

oldfolks76's avatarCape Ann Community

Juni Van Dyke, Director of the Art Program at the Rose Baker Senior Center, recently unveiled the Artists of the Month exhibit for May and June. Every two months artists from the program are honored with an exhibit of their works in the lobby of the Senior Center. The public is encouraged to stop by the Center between 9am and 4pm any weekday to see the work of these accomplished artists.

May 18 Artists

For May and June, Juni has selected two artists who have been honored before: Helen Burgess and MaryRhinelander McCarl. The artists are shown below: Helen (l) and Mary (r) with Juni in front of the exhibit.

Helen Burgess was honored in an exhibit last February with her daughter Valerie Sadler. It was Valerie who convinced her Mother to attend the Rose Baker art program. Although Helen insisted she had no artistic talent at all, she gave the program a…

TREMENDOUS DAY OF SAFETY AND SURVIVAL TRAINING AT THE USCG WITH THE FISHING PARTNERSHIP SUPPORT SERVICES

A full day of Safety and Survival Training was held today at Gloucester’s Coast Guard Station. SST is cosponsored by the Fishing Partnership Support Services, Division of Marine Fisheries, and the USCoast Guard. “Fishermen are 37 times more likely to die on the job than policemen. And on top of that, New England’s waters are the most dangerous in the country. Safety and survival training is not something to ignore—it’s desperately needed and can truly be life-saving for everyone on your boat.” Training was conducted in these vital areas:

  • Man-Overboard Procedures
  • Fire Fighting & Emergency Communications
  • Flooding & Pump Operation
  • Flares & EPIRBs
  • Survival Suits
  • Life Raft Equipment
  • Helicopter Hoist Procedures
  • Basic First Aid

WHERE TO PURCHASE PAPER STRAWS ON CAPE ANN?

Plastic straw stuck in a turtle’s nostril.

Have you made the switch to glass, paper, bamboo, or metal straws? I love paper straws, they are much easier on wildlife and the environment, and am looking for a local place to purchase. Paper straws are carried randomly at the grocery market and I can find them online, but I was wondering if our readers know who might carry them locally, and with consistency, which led me to wondering also, have any of our local restaurants made the switch to anything-but-plastic straws?

We would love to support these businesses. Please write and let us know if you know of a source and/or of a restaurant. Thank you!

Garbage left on the beach becomes garbage polluting our ocean.

Yawn, Another Sunset on Cape Ann: Wednesday May 3, 2018

But it was 72 degrees Fahrenheit, no wind, no bugs, no mosquitoes, the asparagus just popped out of the ground, summer is stretched out in front of us, and the Ryan and Wood Knockabout Gin in my glass is ice cold.

Like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day describing the one day in his life he would like to repeat over and over, this one. And maybe today too.

The Massachusetts Whale Trail “is a special collection of museums and attractions, whale watching, and historic sites and tours with a connection to whales.” Capt Bill & Sons, 7 Seas Whale Watch, and Cape Ann Whale Watch are included.

Naturally, Gloucester had created a version on the HarborWalk which you can find on line or on the trail at marker #36 right by Tonno Restaurant, Gloucester, MA.  Whale watching is beloved here in town. The Gloucester HarborWalk has whale watch information, points of interest and a tab to all the local whale watching  companies.”Most offer daily whale watching trips from April through October.”

When O’Maley 6th graders study Gloucester and visit the HarborWalk, the student thank you drawings featured whale tails and spouting whales. It’s common for local kids to be invited to birthday parties on whale watch trips.  Donna Ardizzoni photographed and wrote about her Right Whale sightings from shore spring 2018, and more whale sightings around town. Parsons Street wall Mural (by the Fish Net HarborWalk street mural) was painted by local kids under the direction of Cape Ann Art Haven and features a great whale.
