Interested in learning how to sail or need to refresh your skills? Would you like to learn about racing? Just want to get out on the crystal clear water of Sandy Bay? Founded in 1885, SBYC is an active sailing club with weekly races throughout the summer. Our sailing program provides basic through advanced training for adults with semi-private lessons on a flexible schedule. Sandy Bay also has an active social program. Its easy to join and membership is surprisingly affordable.

Join us on Friday, June 8th, from 6-7:30pm for an informal evening of appetizers and drinks at Sandy Bay’s historic clubhouse – located at the end of T-WHARF in ROCKPORT. Meet the fleet captains, race committee, sailing instructors, and everyone involved in SBYC’s Adult Sailing Programs.
Can’t make it on Friday? Stop by for Sunday Morning Coffee, 9:30-11am every Sunday until Labor Day, and speak to someone from the Membership Committee.

Senate Retail Task Force issues final report Outlines findings on the challenges and opportunities facing Massachusetts retailers

BOSTON – Today, the Massachusetts Senate Task Force on Strengthening Local Retail unanimously approved its final report. The Task Force was charged with assessing the economic health of the Massachusetts retail sector, and identifying challenges and opportunities facing retail communities.

“I am very pleased that the voices of retail business owners around the commonwealth were heard and represented in this timely report,” said Jon Cahill, General Manager of Maestranzi Bros. in Beverly, MA.

“I want to thank Senator Rodrigues and Senator deMacedo for leading this task force,” said Senate President Harriette L. Chandler (D-Worcester). “Supporting the retail sector is very important and I am happy that we have this report to inform our future policymaking.”

The Task Force, chaired by Senator Michael Rodrigues (D- Westport) and Senator Vinny deMacedo (R- Plymouth), held a series of regional public meetings, hearing directly from retail employers and employees. The Task Force issued a set of findings, reflecting the testimony of retailers, information presented by industry experts, and an examination of current policies and mandates.  

“The Task Force’s report is the result of a thoughtful, collaborative process to better understand the challenges facing Massachusetts retailers,” said Senator Michael Rodrigues. “Now that the Task Force’s work has concluded, I look forward to working with my colleagues to explore ways the state can support retail business growth, and ensure retailers remain a core part of our Commonwealth’s foundation.”

“I want to thank the local retailers who provided the task force with valuable insights into their challenges and aspirations,” said Senator Vinny deMacedo. “This report reflects the collaborative effort and diverse viewpoints of the task force’s membership in a way that we believe will provide meaningful information to guide the Legislature in its efforts to support and grow our local businesses and economies.”

Members of the Task Force also included Senator Mike Barrett (D- Lexington), Senator Julian Cyr (D- Truro), Senator Jason Lewis (D- Winchester), Senator Kathleen O’Connor-Ives (D- Newburyport), and Senator Don Humason (R- Westfield).

The retailers appointed to the Task Force included Judith Herrell, owner of Herrell’s Ice Cream in Northampton; Peter Kavanaugh of La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries in Dartmouth; Barry S. Rotman, Board Chair of Rotmans Furniture in Worcester; Malcolm Sherman, a retail consultant with expertise in turning around struggling businesses; Christopher Carlozzi, Massachusetts State Director of the National Federation of Independent Business; Jon Cahill of Maestranzi Bros.; and Christopher Connolly, President of the Massachusetts State Automobile Dealers Association.  

The remaining appointees included Jim Carvalho, Political Director of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1445; Harris Gruman, Executive Director of the SEIU Massachusetts State Council; and Jon Hurst, President of the Retailers Association of Massachusetts.

I am new to Gloucester, having bought a home two years ago.

As we were clearing some down trees and brush, we came upon a small stand on what I think are Monotropa, related to Indian Pipes, but do not look like any other pictures I have found.  Corliss and another local nursery were not able to provide anything further information.

Your beautiful clumps of wildflowers are the North American native One-flowered Broom-rape (Orobanche uniflora); also called Naked Broomrape. I can see why you thought it was related to Indian Pipe (Monotropa uniflora), or Ghost Plant. Neither grows green leaves and both produce single flowers, typically seen growing in bunches.

Like Indian Pipes, it is a parasitic plant, which means it does not produce chlorophyll, or green tissue, deriving nutrients by attaching its roots to neighboring plants.

There are over 200 species Orobanche. Host plants for One-flowered Broom-Rapes include species of sunflowers, goldenrods, and sedums. 
Aside from white, Naked Broomrape also flowers in lavender and yellow.

Pick #2:  Boston Cannons Lacrosse @ Endicott College

Exciting news!  The Boston Cannons Major League Lacrosse is coming to Endicott College this weekend and again on Saturday, June 23rd as part of their newly launched “Cannons in Your Community” effort.

The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced that the club has created a new initiative to bring select regular season home games to two greater Boston communities in 2018. The Cannons will play one game at Hingham High School in Hingham, MA, and two games at Endicott College in Beverly, MA. The “Cannons In Your Community” effort is focused on strengthening the team’s community outreach and increasing direct engagement with greater Boston area lacrosse fans.

“We’re extremely excited to bring Cannons lacrosse to the communities of the South Shore and North Shore, both are very passionate about the sport,” said Cannons President Ian Frenette. “While our game continues to grow at a significant pace, we need to continue to do our part to drive the continued growth and engagement with current and prospective lacrosse fans in their towns. This initiative is going to give fans an even closer look at Cannons action in an intimate environment and provide us the opportunity to reach new fans by bringing the game to their neighborhood.”
