TREMENDOUS DAY OF SAFETY AND SURVIVAL TRAINING AT THE USCG WITH THE FISHING PARTNERSHIP SUPPORT SERVICES

A full day of Safety and Survival Training was held today at Gloucester’s Coast Guard Station. SST is cosponsored by the Fishing Partnership Support Services, Division of Marine Fisheries, and the USCoast Guard. “Fishermen are 37 times more likely to die on the job than policemen. And on top of that, New England’s waters are the most dangerous in the country. Safety and survival training is not something to ignore—it’s desperately needed and can truly be life-saving for everyone on your boat.” Training was conducted in these vital areas:

  • Man-Overboard Procedures
  • Fire Fighting & Emergency Communications
  • Flooding & Pump Operation
  • Flares & EPIRBs
  • Survival Suits
  • Life Raft Equipment
  • Helicopter Hoist Procedures
  • Basic First Aid

MAYOR SEFATIA AND TONNO’S ANTHONY CATURANO SUGO VS. GRAVY GREAT COOK-OFF ROUND TWO!

Warren Waugh, Mayor Sefatia, Karen Hanson

Mayor Sefatia and her team, Chef Anthony Caturano and the Tonno staff, and Warren Waugh with Cidalia Schwartz and the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group team brought the community together for a fabulous lunch of the Mayor’s “sugo” versus the Chef’s “gravy.” The luncheon included steaming bowls of polenta and sausage with  gravy versus homemade pasta and meatballs dressed with  sugo. Both were wonderfully delicious! Tori Amos and Brian King provided lovely background music and Scottie Mac was the DJ.

Sadly, the day’s event took place without Anthony’s presence. His sister Christina Caturano Ryan passed away from breast cancer several days ago. She was only forty one and left two young children. Anthony was attending Christina’s funeral today. Despite her tragic death, Anthony insisted that the fundraiser take place. His team did a phenomenal job. The staff donated their time and all funds raised goes to the care of cancer patients. We wish to offer our most heartfelt condolences to Anthony.

VERY EXCELLENT SUGGESTIONS FROM MAYOR SEFATIA IN PREPARING FOR A POWER OUTAGE

From Mayor Sefatia:

Customers with power outages with operable phones should report to NGRID at 1-800-465-1212, if you have trouble and I have not posted! They might not be aware of it.

Thank you.

Preparing for Power Outages.

1. Purchase light producing objects.
Gather all the things that may provide light, such as a flashlight, candles, glowsticks, etc., and place them in an easily accessible area.

Attach iridescent or glow in the dark stickers on flashlights so that they can be easily located in little or no light.
Keep glowsticks in the freezer. The cool temperature in your freezer will slow the rate of reaction in the glowstick and make it last for 4-5 days instead of one or two.

Stick candles in pots that are deeper than the candle is long. That way, the light will reflect off of the side of the pot, creating more light, and will lessen the likelihood of a fire.

2. Keep a first aid kit handy. You never know what emergency might happen during a power outage, so it’s wise to stay prepared with a few days’ worth of medication.
Your first aid kit should include bandages (various sizes), gauze, tape, scissors, antiseptic solution such as hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin, and pain medicine. You can buy first aid kits at various drugstores or assemble your own.
Keep a stash of batteries. Make an inventory of the different kinds of batteries your electronics use instead of assuming they all run on double-A or triple-A. Buy batteries in bulk — more than you think you’ll need — so that you’ll have a good amount in case of a prolonged outage.

3. Have your power company’s number stored. If and when the power outage does occurs, inform them (once will do) and they’ll give you an estimate of when you can expect to get electricity back. Knowledge is power.

Sista Felicia  & Family

In addition to the traditional gift items, were a few of my personal favorites: a bottle of Sista Felicia Homemade Limoncello, San Marzano Tomatoes, a freshly baked Cherry Cheesecake and a special gift from  the Mariposa Company!

It’s no secret to friends and family that I have an obsession for all things Mariposa, and love that the companies large product line makes gift giving throughout the year so simple!  The fact is I truly adore the beauty and functionality of the Mariposa Product line. It makes entertaining easy, elegant and  adds a special touch of flavor to anything served on Mariposa! From stemware, to servingware and everything inbetween my tables and home are adorned with Mariposa on a daily basis!  Last night while assembling the gift basket I was disappointed  in my efforts to purchases a “String of Pearls Sticky Note Holder”, for the mayor’s new office.   This handy decorative little note holder is one of the of my most used collection pieces, in the house!  Late last night I decided to  reached out to the Mariposa Company directly after my failed attempts yesterday to purchase  one of my most handy and beautiful Mariposa desktop pieces for my dear friend  and new City Mayor Sefatia. This morning just prior to my scheduled meeting with the Mayor, I learned from my contact at the Mariposa Company, that the “String of Pearls Sticky Note Desktop Holder” is classified as retired collection pieces, but the companies warehouse had one available and had been processed for me to pick up.  Love dealing with the Mariposa folks, as always, they totally came through on short notice. I personally would like to thank Laura Makin and the Mariposa Staff for their assistance this morning, and for the retired “String of Pearls “ collection piece they generously gifted to our City of Gloucester’s New Mayor Sefatia Giambanco  Romeo Theken!

Please know I’m grateful and that the Mayor is Thrilled to have your beautiful Gift on her desk…She Loved it!
