“Gimme dat Fat!”

Fred can finally chew and eat a modest amount of normal food, sans Thrush. I weigh 148 lbs, probably what I weighed in 6th grade in1962. I’m munching all the time now. This was the “Breakthrough Day.” For the first time in10 days, I can swallow food and water without pain. Just give me fatty foods, please…

The Water Shuttle will start running today, Saturday May 2nd, at noon. See you aboard!!!

May 8 Meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club

GAAC May 8 Program Note

This month at GAAC we have a real treat in store, an astronomical travelogue extraordinaire from GAACster Dwight Lanpher. Dwight and his wife Terry embarked on an astronomy tour from Paris to Greenwich in 2013, and returned with a story — and pictures — of great telescopes, great observatories, great clocks, the unlikely history of the discovery of Neptune and the saga of a carpenter’s lifelong work trying to solve the problem of finding longitude at sea.
Dwight will regale us with tales of key individuals from Sir George Airy — he of the Airy disc — to Urbain Le Verrier, who predicted the orbit and position of Neptune using only mathematics. Come on in for a great time with great friends and lots of goodies, and an amazing and colorful astronomical tale.

The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club meets on the second Friday of the month at the Lanesville Community Center in the Lanesville neighborhood of Gloucester from 8:00 to 9:30. You can learn more about the club on our website, http://gaac.us, our Facebook page, at http://www.facebook.com/gaacpage or our Twitter feed, @gaacster .

School Arts Festival Saturday, May 9

Aria McElhenny submits-

Hi Joey –

On Saturday May 9, an incredible annual event will fill downtown Gloucester with art, music, theater and dance! The Gloucester Public Schools arts festival is a showcase of student artwork from all of our schools. This year for the first time, Gloucester preschool students will be participating too, making the festival the biggest it’s ever been.

Paintings, drawings and sculptures from students in grades preschool through 12th will be on display all over town. Tons of local businesses have jumped on board and volunteered to display art in their windows and on their walls.

Concerts, drama workshops, dance demonstrations and more will take place all day at City Hall, Cape Ann Museum and Sawyer free library.

A painting project run by West Parish art teacher Paula Morgan will be going on all day at the Cape Ann Museum sculpture park – everyone’s invited to grab a brush and help create giant, colorful, collaborative paintings!

Check out our fun video and the schedule below for more info. The festival is free and open to the public- hope to see you there!

North Shore Bakes for Breast Cancer!

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer raises money for breast cancer care and research through delicious dessert-filled events.

For the second year in a row, the Serenitee Restaurant Group, including Alchemy and Latitude 43 in Gloucester, is participating in the week-long event.  For the event, each restaurant has created their own special dessert, like Latitude 43’s BRA-zilian Panna Cotta, and 100% of the sales from that dessert will go directly to Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer.

To participate, all you have to do is come in to Latitude 43, Alchemy or one of the other participating restaurants and order the special dessert. It’s that simple!

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer will be held Monday, May 4 through Sunday, May 10, 2015.

Last year, Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer had almost 350 participants in over 100 Massachusetts communities and raised over $78,000. Let’s make this year even better!

F’D UP FRIDAY!

2014-11-17_1506

“It seems that the Antarctic may be a hotspot for documenting disturbing animal sex acts. Many years ago, British explorer George Murray Levick caught Adélie penguins engaging in all sorts of debauchery, such as necrophilia, sexual coercion and sexual abuse of chicks. Now, scientists have observed fur seals trying to have sex with penguins. While these observations may not be as shocking as what Levick documented, they are unusual nonetheless.

This bizarre sexual behavior was actually first documented in 2006 when scientists spotted a fur seal trying to copulate with a king penguin on Marion Island, a remote and mostly barren island in the sub-Antarctic. At the time, the researchers speculated that the incident may have occurred because the seal was frustrated or sexually inexperienced. Alternatively, they suggested, it could have been an act of aggression as the seal attempted to protect its territory. Or it simply could have been a playful act that turned sexual.

Upon returning to the island to continue wildlife observations, scientists observed the strange act a further three times, which took them by surprise to say the least.

“Honestly I did not expect that follow up sightings of a similar nature to that 2006 one would ever be made again,” said lead scientist Nico de Bruyn, “and certainly not on multiple occasions.”

As described in the journal Polar Biology, the team observed young male Antarctic fur seals sexually coercing (using force to achieve mating) king penguins on three separate occasions. The gender of the penguins was unknown, but they appeared to be in good health.” CLICK HERE FOR MORE
