My View of Life on the Dock
On the March 30th podcast with Paul Morrison and Paulie Walnuts I set the over/under on when I thought the Good harbor Beach Footbridge would be repaired at the third Saturday of May. Haven’t seen any work on it yet.
Hope I’m not too far off on the prediction because as of today it looks like the OVER is the better bet.
We will see.
Hi Joey. Long time not speak. But I wanted to share this story with you and possibly your readers.
Gloucester folk…
It is funny. I do not live in Gloucester, never have lived in Gloucester, but I am hooked on this town. Visit it as often as I can, photograph it even more, I often eat and drink in Gloucester, to the point that my wife, children and many friends poke fun at me for it.
Truth be told, I never thought that I would be having such a "Gloucester" experience in Washington D.C. Here’s the story: we flew down to Washington DC this past Wednesday. On Thursday (4/19) we were at the Zoo. Great place. When I say "great" I don’t just mean quality of the exhibits … I also mean size. The kids loved it. We spent the whole morning there. And towards the end of the day we found ourselves on the opposite side of the exit. That is about half an hour worth of walking UPHILL!!!
We were at the Amazonia exhibit, when my wife asked this volunteer for the best way to get to the exit. She saw us all four exhausted and she said: "if you wait 10 minutes, I get off work and I can give you a ride to the entrance." Of course we accepted her gracious offer.
As we were exhausted we took advantage of the wait and sat down for 10 minutes. She comes picks us up and we walk to her car. Guess what folks. She is a Gloucester native. Born, raised and lived in Gloucester until the ’80s. Yes, I feel like an idiot for not asking her for her name, but it was a long day and by then my brain had already called it a day.
We chatted, and I found out that she now lives in Bethesda with her husband, and after she retired a couple of years ago, she started volunteering at the National Zoo. Her father was a Gloucester fire chief. She was in Gloucester last October, so I filled her in on the news I get from Joey’s blog and we started chatting about Gloucester. Of course, the fire chief was also a freemason and since I also am one, the conversation turned to freemasonry. Before we knew it we had reached the gate. We all thanked her and we parted ways. Now, what more can a tired visitor to a large city ask for? A kind-hearted Gloucester native to add, with her good deed, to Gloucester’s pride.
I feel very lucky because all the folks I have met in (or from) Gloucester are GREAT!!!

During my son’s newborn assessment years ago, the pediatrician turned my rosy baby around in his hands like an experienced fruit vendor with a melon. “Look,” he said, as he placed the baby down on his side. “My favorite anomaly.”
Favorite anomaly? Anomaly, anomaly, anomaly. I couldn’t remember what it meant, and certainly not in relation to my baby boy. Atypical? Abnormal? That couldn’t be right. A mother wants a pediatrician to say it is the most normal baby he has even seen in the history of babies.
He tugged on my son’s ear. “There,” he said, “a gill.”
Dear god. A gill. It was only a small pinprick, as if he’d been born with a pierced ear, but this evolutionary tic was too high up on the ear rim for me to pass him off as a very hip baby. To make matters worse, in my family, the distinctive marker of infant beauty is related to how small and flat the ears are, so everyone looks at them first. I kept a tight little cap on him for months.
Scoot on up to the winter of 2013. Super Storm Sandy. Flooding. Powerful ocean surges. One extreme weather event after another, and the Atlantic succeeds in changing the coastline yet again. Adapting to drastic change may mean more than just picking up one’s shell and moving inland, for when a landscape changes, so do we. For most of the past 150 years, since Darwin first laid out the ground rules for natural selection, scientists assumed that humans had stopped evolving. They believed that with technology, medical advances, and culture, humans had become immune to evolutionary pressures. But no. Like all other living things on Earth, humans undergo genetic changes in response to conditions around them, passing beneficial adaptations down to their offspring. We are not exempt from the laws of nature. And the more extreme the pressures, the faster we will latch on to any mutation that might give an extra edge to our survival.

I get roughly 2-5 emails a day from people I may or may not have heard from in forever whose email accounts get hacked and the hackers generally send out mass emails from their email accounts that say something like-

Really at this point we should all have had enough experience and know not to click on links to sites we’re not familiar with but if you’re not here’s your warning.
Apparently my email account just sent oput a round of these. Don’t click on link’s in anyone’s email to you that is just a line and a link to a weird site you’ve never heard of.

Next Thursday, April 25, I will be teaching an origami class at The Hive at 7PM. The cost is $15 students, $20 adults. Supplies are included.
The theme is “Spring!” So I am going to offer a “menu” of models we can chose from, including flowers, butterflies, birds, and insects. The ones in the photo are examples; which models we can do depends on the experience and skill of the workshop participants. I’ll have a range of difficulty from simple to high intermediate.
I’ve flown AirTran this year who boasts of having WiFi equipped planes. On this Jet Blue flight where I am composing this post and will save it as a draft on my laptop until I can get home to a WiFi signal and upload it there are seats which are all equipped with Direct TV and a pretty good selections of stations.
If you could pick just one, which would it be- $10 per flight WiFi or free direct TV?
Next scenario- Free WiFi or Free Direct TV.
Personally I’d take the WiFi in both situations but I’m curious what our readership would pick.

Cape Ann Trail Stewards invites the public to join the inaugural clean up workday at the city of Gloucester’s Goose Cove Reservoir on Sunday, April 21st (the day before Earth Day) beginning at 1PM.

Teachers and students at all five elementary schools will visit their school gardens to plant a variety of salad greens.
In the end of May we will have a district-wide School Salad Day where children get to harvest and eat the salad greens they grew.
The Emerald Forest Cleanup will be on Earth Day April 22 from 12p.m. to 200p.m.

The North Shore Arts Association will celebrate its season opening on Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 6-8 pm. This combined Artist and Associate Member reception will feature a wine and chocolate party. More than 100 oil, watercolor and pastel paintings as well as graphic works and sculpture will be on display.

Gears in our historic Mill Building
Friday April 19th, we’re looking for volunteers to scrape our new (used) floats prior to lowering them into place alongside the Harriet Webster Wharf. This will be on-going during the day; check with us for specifics.
Additionally, we’ll welcome volunteers at mutually agreeable times to prime/paint new windows to replace the green painted plywood currently covering the window frames on the Mill Building.

Thank you for your offer of assistance with repairing the vandalized Digital Dogtown posts. I have been carefully planning, in consultation with experts, the best approach to repairing my project and to funding these repairs. I have received some offers of donated materials and labor, but I know that there will be significant costs to replacing the damaged posts. I met this evening with the Gloucester Open Space and Recreation Commission to finalize a plan of action with their approval. We will be ready to put these plans into action as soon as we have sufficient funds.
I have made arrangements to use the Gloucester Fund as the agency for collecting and using financial donations. The Gloucester Fund is a volunteer organization for collecting and disbursing funds for local charities and projects of benefit to the community, such as the summer fireworks and parades. They are a 501c organization, so donations made out to them are tax deductible; your cancelled check will serve as your receipt for tax purposes. If you are interested in helping in this way, please send a check made out to "The Gloucester Fund", with a note on the memo line that this check is for "Digital Dogtown".
