This is an old postcard sent by Sylvia DeBoever (you remember Sylvia, Sarah Lawrence’s niece from the 66 year letter post) to Fred Bodin.  Fred sent it to me so you could all enjoy it.  Thanks Sylvia.  Hope your knee surgery went well.

Meet Mr. Pumpkin

…if you haven’t already.

Mr. Pumpkin allowed me to interrupt his nap time for this photo. He is very friendly and relaxed (or at least he was when I visited).  He lives at Gloucester Music (210 Main St.), a store that sells CDs, LPs, instruments, sheet music, and other musical supplies and accessories.

Petition to support the new hotel: Here’s how to sign up

A new group has been formed to support positive change in Gloucester that will strengthen our city.  Citizens for Positive Change in Gloucester believes the hotel proposed on Pavilion Beach will help our economy grow. Gloucester needs to move forward, not backward, and create jobs and a healthy economy that will give our young people a reason to stay and visitors a reason to come here. It’s time to say “Enough is enough” to those who’ve held Gloucester back.

The new hotel will go on Pavilion Beach, near where an earlier hotel stood for 65 years. (Here is a previous GMG post about that hotel.) The hotel will create over 100 new full-time jobs, attract visitors whose spending will strengthen our downtown businesses, and generate revenue for the City from Meals, Rooms, and Property Taxes.

Click here to sign a petition to the City Council and Planning Board in support of the hotel. You can also share it on Facebook by clicking here.

If you’re interested in joining us, please visit us at www.WeLoveGloucester.org.

Thanks,
Citizens for Positive Change in Gloucester

Video- Mr Bentley From Bikini Speedo Dodgeball Squad "Ass With Class" Is Giving Back To The Littles, Tourney Rules and Brackets

Rules of the 2012 bikini/speedo Dodgeball tournament

All 5 team members will start by lining up against the back of their side of the court,
5 balls will be distributed across the center line (2 large kickball style balls, and 3
smaller “stingers”)

On the ref’s whistle, teams can race to the center to claim the balls; those who get balls
must retreat to the back wall again before throwing their first ball. Balls thrown before
that will not count.

Balls that bit the ground first or the side of the court are dead, and do not count for outs if
they then hit a player.

If a player is holding a ball, they can use it to block other balls thrown at them.

If you are hit by a ball or your throw is caught cleanly by a member of the opposite team,
you are out, and must immediately stand in the side court area in the order you were hit.

If a player catches a ball, one player from their team who is already out in the side court
area can come back in the game. (follow the order of outs, the first one who was out is
the first back in, etc.)

No head hunting. Balls thrown at the face will not count as outs and the thrower will be
warned.

Balls that fly out of the court will be retrieved and returned to the side of the court where
they went out of bounds.

Once all 5 players from a team are out, the match is over.

This is a great event for a great cause… have fun!!

Late-breaking news: MAC ups the ante!

Joey, this news just came over the wire about Sunday’s event.

Late-breaking news: MAC ups the ante!

This just in: Manchester Athletic Club has upped the ante for Sunday’s Bikini-Speedo Dodgeball event, doubling the entry fee for Muffy White’s Hot Mess team that will benefit Next Step.

Just as bets before a horse race flow toward the favorite, the smart money before this Sunday’s event is lining up behind the Hot Mess squad. The MAC had held back on making its support public in an effort not to intimidate the other teams, especially the other so-called “gyms” in the event.

Just one word…

Karen Ristuben will be performing “Just, one word…” On Monday, March 5, 2012 7:30 pm at the Rose Performance Hall at Endicott College Center for the Arts, Beverly, Mass., co-sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch and the Endicott College Environmental Society.

“Just, one word…” a performance lecture about plastics, addresses the issue of marine plastic pollution from an artist/educator’s perspective.  Karen offesr a different way to represent and communicate the hard scientific data currently the focus of many marine scientists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, and policy-makers. Her project deals with our use, over-use, and disposal of plastics, their toxicity, and their effects on our public health. Highlighting the issue of marine plastic pollution and its impact on ocean ecosystems including the marine food chain, she uses a multi-media performance/lecture format, using her own and archival video and photography, presenting the facts and data in an aesthetically compelling format. Her message is made personal by her personal story, including her voyage in July 2011 through the North Pacific Gyre with a leading science team from Algalita Marine Research Foundation.

Rubber Duck Tip of the Week: The Weather

I love weather websites. Watch the clouds roll in, compare forecasts. Weather Underground is my favorite. But then I ran into WeatherSpark. Check it out. Dodgeball weather looking good:

Click the map to go to WeatherSpark with some of my settings. It looks complicated, and it is. But well worth figuring out. Besides forecasts all graphically shown. You can select the cloud cover graph, wind speed graph, wind direction graph, rain accumulation, all sorts of stuff. But the cool thing is to go back into the past. Currently anything after 2007 and you can playback the storm. Watch the clouds roll in for last year’s Halloween storm. Watch the wind direction as Irene comes ashore.

It’s in beta testing so the data will likely go back all the way to your birthday soon.

Rubber Duck Bonus tip: once you pull the slider back and forth (down in the bottom right) so that a past storm is showing, CLICK and DRAG across the hours you want replayed in the map on the left. Now run the cloud movie (slider below map.)
