Round Robin Redbreast Snowy Day Video

Each year we are visited by a breathtakingly beautiful migrant flock of American Robins. This year they arrived on leap day, many weeks later than is typical. There wasn’t much to eat as the Mocking Birds and Catbirds have eaten nearly all the berries on the Dragon Lady hollies. Fortunately, the winterberry had held its fruit. Unfortunately, the aggressive and pesky European Starlings were competing for what little fruit remained.

The following was originally posted December 2010 ~

The widely distributed and beloved American Robin (Turdus migratorius) hardly needs an introduction. The American Robin is the largest member of the thrush family—thrushes are known for their liquid birdsongs and the robin is no exception. Their unmistakable presence is made known when, by early spring, the flocks have dispersed and we see individual robins strutting about the landscape with fat worms dangling. Unmistakable, too, is the male’s beautiful birdsongs, signaling to competing males to establish their territory, as well as to entice prospective females. Read more about the American Robin including suggestions of native plants that provide nourishment for resident and nomad.

The Song Speaks for Itself

Not many performers are brave enough to sit in front of a camera and play a song solo with only ambient room lighting.  No movie lights, no high-production value, no overdubs, no background vocals.  It’s just Marina, her guitar, her voice and her song.  And it works!

Music starts at 6:30 tonight and keeps on goin’ ~ Jazz, dance, dueling pianos, rock, bop, groove — and Gloucester’s own sound.  There’s absolutely NO REASON to stay home tonight.  Check out the full lineup here.

George Eliot Quote of The Week from Greg Bover

“It’s never too late to be who you might have been.”
Mary Anne Evans, aka George Eliot (1819-1880)

Among the finest novelists of the Victorian Age, Evans chose a masculine pen name in order that her work would be taken more seriously by the male-dominated literati, and to keep her private life, including a twenty year relationship with a married man, private. Her novels Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, and especially Middlemarch, are regarded as masterful descriptions of life in provincial England with great insight into the psychological drama of everyday life.

Art by Peter Reis

In the time I’ve lived in Gloucester, I’ve been walking around and exploring the local stores, galleries, etc. little by little.  For some reason, I have neglected the eastern part of Main Street; I always end up walk west, on the strip from around Alchemy to the Annie. So the other day, I decided to head in the opposite direction.

One of the treasures I found is Peter Reis art space at 222 Main Street. He was about to close up, but he saw me looking in the window and invited me in.

Besides being a very friendly and welcoming person, creates beautiful works of art, ranging from paintings on canvas for hanging on the wall….

to painted wooden toy chests…

and even a beautiful bronze crucifix!

His work on display incorporates saturated colors and strong geometry, which makes it very striking (and to my taste). Although some of the paintings are straightforwardly representational, most are somewhere along the spectrum of surrealism or self-reference: paintings of fantasy space-scapes, paintings of paintings that merge into the scene, paintings that are paintings of themselves, a pool table with fruit instead of pool balls… It’s really fun to look at!

So, stop by the gallery if you have a chance. It’s well worth it.  He also has a good website: http://artbypeterreis.com/artwork/

Gloucester High School Honors Physics, Robotics, Technology students are looking for some of these batteries

We have amazing teachers. Kurt Lichtenwald teaches engineering, technology, robotics (with support from Gloucester Education Foundation), and physics at Gloucester High School . Here are some photos of a STEMsapalooza day at East Gloucester Elementary. Kurt Lichtenwald brought 34 high school students for a full day to get the younger students excited about science, technology, engineering and math. His high school students ran learning stations that showcased their own engineering work. That’s  infrared writing you see featured in the first slide and Kurt (he’s the guy in the suit); there were also plenty of  remote controlled customized robotics and clever science experiments that had action packed hands on science (buoyancy, Gas Laws, etc). All grades were enthralled.

See that second slide? They could use any of these batteries if you have some and don’t need them any longer. It’s amazing what they invent with a little power juice!

Audiences are sure to be impressed and inspired by the talent and exuberance radiated by our young performers as they sing, dance, and act out this heartwarming story. BASE Jumping at Good Harbor

The guy’s name is unimportant, but he said he was working up to something a little taller…

Submitted by Charlie Carroll

Did You Know?  That BASE jumping, also sometimes written as B.A.S.E jumping, is an activity that employs an initially packed parachute to jump from fixed objects? “BASE” is an acronym that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: buildings, aerials, spans (bridges), and earth (cliffs).

T Minus 4 Days and Counting

Rebecca, Ryan, Frankie and me got together this morning to put the finishing touches of the tournament this weekend.  I’d just like to extend my thanks and adoration to our team of civic minded, diligent and fun people who have put their energy into making this happen.

Great people all around who get “fun” and community!

Thank you Eloise and Madeline

Sunday afternoon Eloise and Madeline and Joey stopped by, affording Mom Jill the opportunity to go to the market. We played dolls, but only for a moment—the girls were much more interested in Cosmos the Cat, Rosie the Dog, the magnifying glass, and butterflies. Several days later an envelope bursting with drawings made by the girls arrived in the mail; drawings of Cosmos and Rosie, butterflies and hearts, diamonds and sunshine. Thank you Elosie and Madeline for the super fun afternoon and beautiful drawings. I love your special gift!

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party

Dave Says,

It’s gonna be a slugfest this week as we welcome back Ms. Diane Blue, the Octomom of the Blues. The gloves come off as we  hit you below your belt of scotch. She’ll be railing and wailing thru the whole canon of R&B, chickpop, and funque. And she’s bringing in the artillery, too: None other than that keyboard octopus himself,  Mr. Cliff Spencer. Cliff has disappeared for awhile now but he’s straightened things out with his parole officer so he’s back in the fold. We miss him!
And welcome a newbie (for us) : Mr. Jeff “Jungleboy” Thompson, on drummps.  Hold the elephants, Sabu. He works with the divine Miss DB all the time. Ungawah! Czech him out! Of course, Mr. Greg T. and myself will be there, taking notes, and squeezing them back out. Don’t let the weather fool you…it’s gonna be hot inside!
And for those of you who are under-employed or suffering from chronic malaise, why not come down to the Rose Baker Senior Center next Monday and work out those kinks. Once again, the Old Salty jazz Band is at it again, swinging thru the trees of life. I’m getting tired of repeating myself, but these guys are a national treasure, and I’m so proud that they let me play with them. It’s free! Hours 1 pm till 3. Wear your truss!

Small fishing boat near a lighthouse

Should the lighthouse be taller? I tried to get the proportions from photos of Eastern Point lighthouse, more or less. It is probably not quite in the right proportion to the size of the fishing boat, but folding from dollar bills limits the range of size I can produce…

No dollar bills were damaged during this production… All three could be unfolded and put back in my wallet.
