Three people went for a walk out on the sandbar off Wingaersheek Beach Sunday afternoon and ended up going for an unexpected swim. It was a beautiful day and I was out showing the village to visiting FOB’s Linda and Rob Castagna from Milford, NJ when we came across this scene. In the first photo, you can see the most distracted of the three running full speed to catch up with his two friends who were nearly back to the beach (2nd photo). In the 3rd photo you can see that the beginning of the sandbar is now under water and in the 4th photo, well – they have no choice but to wade in to shore. Fortunately is was a balmy November day and the water hasn’t had a chance to get too cold.

I made that mistake many years ago. But, it was during a very dark night with chest waders on and a fishing pole in my hand. So I awkwardly swam, as my waders filled with water and I hung on to my favorite pole for dear life. Nearly sank but touched solid ground just in time. I would do things differently now, being older and smarter.

For some reason I think it was finished in 1954, just trying to find if anyone knows.

I dug surf clams in knee deep water there with Bill and Esther Steele, and it was amazing how quickly the water rose. We were in a boat, so it wasn’t a problem. Another time, just the opposite happened: I saw big cabin cruiser early one morning which was high and dry on it’s side on the spit (sand bar), with the sleepy-eyed owner looking around to see what the heck happened. I was reminded of an old Down East tale: A dude yachtsman asks a Maine lobsterman if a particular spot was a good anchorage. The lobsterman answers: “Yep, I’ve dug some great clams there.” Great photo sequence EJ, and I’m glad it had a happy ending. Now they know, and hopefully everyone who saw your post will be aware.

It was a lovely walk with EJ on Sunday, up and down countless hills and onto several beaches. It is easy to see how it could happen being caught in the tide rolling rapidly in upon you. One of the escapees had to be in up to the shoulders heading in the wrong direction until it became deeper and then quickly turn in the other direction to get out in time. Think I will have a few bad dreams about watching the escape to higher ground.

It was fun showing you and Rob around Annisquam. Next time you’ll have better walking shoes.
