HUGE REMATCH RESCHEDULED – Sugar Mags vs. Classic Cooks Tomorrow (Thursday) at 4pm

OK, you’ve waited patiently now for 4 weeks to see this epic rematch and tomorrow is the day — 4pm Stage Fort Park — weather looks great — and we have a special twist:  Thursday’s throwdown will help answer the question How does local seafood affect the health and diet of young people?  In addition to the pro judges (Lara Lepionka of Backyard Growers and Beacon Street Farm and Hallie Baker of Turtle Alley Chocolates) we’ll have 3 youth judges who will make sure the chefs’ creations are compatible with young people’s palates — a very tall order, indeed.  So bring your kids and get them to try the dishes too.

Here’s a video that Joey made of the last contest between these two culinary giants (check out the end of the video where Angela Sanfilippo tells you what to do with the head of a hake — delicious!)

And here’s the press release from Niaz Dorry of the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance, who sponsors the throwdowns:

Seafood Throwdown Brings Unique Partnership to Farmers Market
Highlights Local Seafood in Healthcare Industry’s Purchasing Decisions

Gloucester, MA – Seafood Throwdown, a unique cooking competition that highlights the importance of local seafood in restoring a healthy ocean ecosystem, is back at Cape Ann Farmers Market on Thursday, August 23, 2012 with a twist: focus of this Throwdown will be to highlight the role of local seafood in young people’s health and diet while showcasing the work underway to assist healthcare industry in shifting their buying practices to support locally caught seafood. The Cape Ann Farmers’ Market and the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance have sponsored Seafood Throwdowns for the past four years to raise awareness about why “Who Fishes Matters.”

This Thursday’s event is a rematch between Classic Cooks and Sugar Mags. Last year’s Seafood Throwdown winner Julie Ann Geary of Classic Cooks Catering will be joined by Justin Grandin of The Happy Taco food truck. They will compete against 5 time winner Sugar Mags who will be featuring Lidia Sands and Sandro Carvalho with owner Missy Hart cheering from the sidelines … download the full press release PDF here.

After the throwdown, be sure to stay in town for a night of great music at 10 local venues.  See the full music lineup here.

Oustanding music is to be had tonight. It’s not every day that Soule Monde comes to town. Tonight~ MinglewoodTavern AtLat with ~ Dennis Monagle Sessions……..be there. It gonna be awesome

Ok, so if you did not catch Soule Monde at The Sexy and 17 Years of The Open Jam celebration at The Rhumb Line last Monday night, have no fear. Because, you can see them at MinglewoodTavern AtLat  tonight Wednesday at The Dennis Monagle Sessions.

How awesome is that. Now I’m not one who is use to listening to music without vocals. Their music is like a whirlwind of sound so exciting and enticing you don’t need them. I got their CD  and had to go out of town so I got to listen to the whole thing. It had me dancing in my seat and slightly rockin my head (didn’t want anyone to think I was having a seizure or something). I bet my son Michael will know exactly what I’m talkin about. Check them out here or go to the Russ Lawton website.
I totally love the live music scene here and all that it has to offer!

Soule Monde with Renee Dupris and Dan King……Last time they came to town a couple of years ago. You never know who may join in tonight either.

Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski from the Trey Anastasio Band bring their duo Soule Monde to join the Bandit Kings- Dan King, Ann Marie, Renee Dupuis, Dennis Monagle and Joe Cardoza

Pet of the Week-Pecan

pecan, pet of the week, cape ann animal aid

Hi!  The silly volunteer here keeps calling me sweety pie!   I keep telling her I am a dog, not a pie!  I think it is because my name is Pecan.  She keeps telling me what a sweet and cute pup I am.

I am a eight-month-old Retriever/Lab mix girl and I am black-and-white.   I am a playful pup and I still need a little training, but if you are up to the challenge a new pup can bring, I am up to learning and listening.   I promise you will never be bored, my tail will always be wiggling and my personality is always happy.   Please stop by the Cape Ann Animal Aid, now located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter in Gloucester and visit me.

Don’t forget Dog Day on Sunday, September 9 (rain date September 15) from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at State Fort Park overlooking beautiful Gloucester Harbor.  There will be a Pet Expo with mini games, agility, alumni photos, pet related vendors, food, games for people and dogs, bouncy house and more!  Fun for everyone!

You may visit us online at: CapeAnnAnimalAid.com or visit us in person which is even better because you will get to meet me, Pecan.  I have to run – now I am hungry thinking about pecan pie!

Czerepak on Rocky Neck

Czerepak showThis Thursday August 23 the art of the late Al Czerepak will be featured at Kismet Gallery on Rocky Neck. The event is a unique showing of the local artist’s work featuring art previously unseen by many. Czerepak lived and worked on Cape Ann for over 30 years and his paintings, metal sculptures and wood carvings are beautiful reflections of the environment that nurtured him. He saw art in everything and could make art out of anything. The free exhibit will run from Thursday the 23rd to Sunday the 26th.

#BOOM! Coastal Living magazine calls Gloucester a "Coastal Dream Town"

Joey,
More positive national media coverage for Gloucester: Coastal Living has a great article on Gloucester in next month’s issue. The article calls Gloucester a "Coastal Dream Town" and says Gloucester has a "rare combination of urban spirit and historic charm."
"An enthusiastic nightlife scene featuring live theater and local bands is bolstered by a restaurant renaissance," the article says about our city.

Great job by you and local Remax Realtor (and GoodMorningGloucester contributor) Kenny MacCarthy for talking with the reporter and providing colorful quotes in the story.
Matter Communications started talking with Coastal Living, one of the top lifestyle and travel magazines, about Gloucester two years ago so  it’s nice to see such a positive story finally come out! Matter works with the Cape Ann Chamber and local businesses to put the good word out about what a great place Gloucester is to live, work and visit.
Readers can see the Coastal Living story here: http://capeannchamber.com/Tourism/Coastal%20Living.pdf
Congrats, Gloucester!

Thank you Tyler and Domenic – Cape Ann SUP Rocks!

I have long wanted to try stand up paddleboarding.  I ran into Tyler a week or so ago and told him again that I wanted to try to carve out a time to go out on one before summer was over.  He said that he would be happy to do a Rocky Neck demo session.  Yesterday from 4:00-6:00, Cape Ann SUP co-owners, Tyler Knight and Dominic Olivo, came to Rocky Neck with a bunch of paddleboards so Rocky Neckers could try it out.  It was too bad that more people didn’t turn out, as there were plenty of boards and it was such a gorgeous afternoon, warm air and water with smooth waters at Oaks Cove where we went out.  I definitely want to try going out at night now on one of those lit up boards, although with my night blindness, I might crash into something.  If you haven’t tried paddleboarding, you owe it to yourself to get in touch with Tyler or Domenic and go out before it gets too cold.
