Smith’s Cove

Neighbor Dave eating lobster on his boat and watching the sun set. He very generously offered Rosa several bites of lobster–something she never gets at home because her owners are too stingy when it comes to sharing lobster!

  1. Thank you Father Green and Roger.

Roger, I was photographing from the docks at the end of Pirate’s Lane next to the North Shore Art Association. I believe that is Smith’s Cove. In some old maps it is called Smith’s with an apostrophe, and sometimes Smiths without the apostrophe. In newer maps the s has been dropped altogether and it is referred to as Smith Cove. I am curious to know what area of the harbor is called Rocky Neck Harbor?

    1. Hi Kim, Well the Devil is in the Details. Technically I still believe you were photographing Gloucester “Inner Harbor”. NOAA chart #13279. I have a sailboat moored in Smith Cove {no S} and have been there for over 50 years. There is no Rocky Neck Harbor and I am sorry for mentioning that; but I thought it might be known that way by people outside the area.
I can’t say when Smith Cove becomes Gloucester Inner Harbor {perhaps if you drew a line from the Railways to Pirates lane where you took the picture.} Anyway who ultimately really cares; point is great photos were taken and I’m sure enjoyed by many!

      Regards,
      Roger

  2. WONDERFUL sunset shots. The second one resembles Venice with the pilings. Did the Black Swallowtails die off?

    1. Thank you Allen. Re Black Swallowtails–the adults live for about four weeks. The Black Swallowtails that we are seeing now in gardens are newly emerged from their chrysalides.
