Hi, Joey. I want to create an image of the paint factory and I would like
to include the words painted on the sides. As I’m sure you know, on one
side it says "Manufactory" and underneath that it says "Established"
something — the year is worn away.
Do you happen to know what the year was? I know the company was
established in 1863 but I’m not sure if they were using that building from
day one, so I wanted to check with someone who has a lot of knowledge
about Gloucester.
Thanks for any info,
Clare

I used a couple photos I took in the late 1960’s to do a recent painting. While faded even then, it shows pretty clearly 1893. The 3 was in pretty bad shape and might have been an 8 but I used 3 in my painting. Also, the small building on the left said Gloucester Sea Jacket Marine Paints on four lines.

Hi Joey,
I just talked with Iain Kerr, CEO of Ocean Alliance who purchased the Paint Factory. He says the old photos say 1863 – for sure the last number is a “3”. Then I lost the comment thread, so I’m sending directly to you. Attached is a photo and Iain’s message. he is interested in seeing others photos if they exist. Maybe post this on GMG??
Here you go Barbara,
If anyone has a better shot I’d love to see it.
My interpretation of this shot is 1863.
