Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line to host Justin Quinn

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00

Dave says,

We have the post Fat Tuesday post-partum blues this week as we welcome back Justin Quinn and his merry band of idiots to our stage. Justin is the meanest and heartiest practicioner of the Mississippi saxaphone (harmonica) that I’ve ever known. Every time his boys show up,  Fred needs an extra clean-up crew! We’ll be wailin’ thru the whole book of Chicago blues. He’s bringing along Mr. Jon Ross, vibrating gootarist to help us with our recovery. Mr. Andrew Jones will be filling those size14 drum duties. Of course, Mr. Greg T. and myself will be there, putting up the cracks.

And then there’s Saturday nite at the Annie. Yet another grueling evening cranking out swing and other sordid dance music with the Good Old Salty Jazz and Swing Band, featuring Mr. Henry Allen on vocals. We’ve done this a couple of times and we really had a ball, so you should get out and dance while your neuromotor system still works. Hours are 8 to 11. Admission is $20.www.HenryAllen.org www.TheAnnie.org www.TheCapeAnn.org

Plan B Fishing Vessel Video Gloucester Harbor 2009

2 Crewman Rescued from the Plan B

2 Crewman Rescued

1st Coast Guard District NewsBOSTON — The Coast Guard assisted two fishermen after their fishing vessel began to take on water nine miles east Kennebunkport, Maine, Tuesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England received a call at 7:20 a.m. from the 81-foot fishing vessel Plan B reporting that they were taking on water and pumps were unable to keep up with the flooding. The men were donning survival suits.

The Coast Guard immediately launched an Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, a Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor, N.H., rescue boat crew, a Coast Guard Station South Portland, Maine, rescue boat crew, and diverted the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma. The Coast Guard also issued an urgent marine information broadcast asking boaters in the area to assist the fishermen.

The crew of the fishing vessel Cameran Lee responded to the UMIB and safely transferred the two fishermen from the Plan B to their vessel.

Weather on scene was 10 to 15-knot winds and two-foot seas.

The Tahoma and Station South Portland are currently on scene monitoring the situation.

“This rescue highlights the importance of communication in an already hazardous environment,” said Lt. Nick Barrow, command center supervisor at Sector Northern New England. “The value of good Samaritans in our tight-knit community is invaluable.”

The Coast Guard protects roughly 20,000 commercial fishing vessels in the northeastern U.S. and encourages fleets to prepare for the unexpected as the season continues.

The Plan B is still afloat and crews are arranging commercial salvage. There were no injuries or pollution reported.

The Hotel on Pavilion Beach from Fred Bodin

The Pavilion Hotel, Gloucester, circa 1880 Alice M. Curtis/©Fredrik D. Bodin
The Pavilion Hotel, built in 1849, was Gloucester’s first true resort hotel. It was located between Stacy Boulevard and Fort Square, on the edge of downtown. The Gloucester Telegraph called it “the first specimen of architectural good taste ever seen here.” The Pavilion featured a two level veranda with dramatic harbor views, fine dining, a saltwater pool, bowling, and accommodated 150 guests. The beachfront of the hotel, called Crescent Beach at the time, is now called Pavilion Beach. On a foggy night in October of 1914, the 65 year old Pavilion Hotel, then named the Surfside Hotel, was consumed by fire. The building which we call the Tavern now sits where the Pavillion once was.

Alicia DeWolfe Team Captain of Mamie’s Kitchen Muffin Tops Bikini Speedo Dodgeball Has Some harsh words For Muffy White Who Gets No Respect From Alicia-

Alicia writes-

Hey Joey!
You wanted us to do some trash talking but with a name like Muffy and the team called Hot Mess…Need I say more?

Just like Patches O’Houlian says "If you want to have dodgeball victory, you have to grab it by its haunches and you gotta hump it into submission!"
See you on the field!
Alicia
"Mamies Top Muffin"

Looks Like there will be no love lost between these two squads on the Dodgeball Court!

While at Mamie’s Kitchen yesterday for breakfast we were stopped by fans of GMG who had travelled up from Connecticut to go to Mamie’s Kitchen based on my recommendation.  I was heading for the can and these three lovely ladies stopped me and asked ‘Are you Joey?”  After replying yes, they told me how they loved the blog and were at mamie’s because of me.  Sweet!  I lost the piece of paper with their names on it Sad smile

There is also controversy with Alicia’s husband reportedly abandoning Alicia in favor of the Cross Fit Cape Ann Buns and Guns Squad.  Betrayal!  If you don’t think we’re going to align these teams up to face each other you’re crazy. That ought to make for an awkward Sunday dinner table!

History Meets Technology at the Gloucester Marine Railways From Kathy Chapman

Andrew Williams of 3D Measure is performing a 3D laser scan on the National Historic Landmark Schooner Adventure, which was built in 1926, in Essex, Massachusetts, by the John F. James and Son Shipyard.

http://schooner-adventure.org/

While a vessel is dry-docked, a laser measure can be made of the outside of the hull and deck, collecting "as-built" data. This data is then turned into a 3D surface model.

http://www.3dmeasure.com/

Naval Architects John and Fritz Koopman of Propulsion Data Systems of Marblehead will then use the 3D model together with an internal scan to produce a stability calculations, tonnage and other documentation which can be submitted to the US Coast Guard.

The Hidden Beauty of Pollination

“Beauty and seduction, I believe, is nature’s tool for survival, because we will protect what we fall in love with.” –Louie Schwartzberg

Friends who are aware of my butterfly and nature film projects send me the most exquisite images and links to films and videos. Thank you Emily for sharing The Hidden Beauty of Pollination, created by Louis Schwartzberg, award winning photogragher and cinemetagrapher, who has been filming time-lapse flowers and pollinators for over thirty years. The video link takes to you the full screen version, which is without a doubt the best way to view this extraordinary short film (only about 7 minutes in length). The second link leads to a brief talk given by Schwartzberg, also very well worth seeing.

Louie Schwartzberg: The Hidden Beauty of Pollination

The second sentence in Schwartzberg’s quote reminded me of Baba Dioum’s quote (a noted Senegalese poet), “In the end we will conserve only what we will love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.”

from deb clarke; Paul in Detail, Verre Eglomise

Deb Clarke;

This is a painting that I started several years ago, and have not finished. The painting is in the attic. why did I stop working on it? I have misplaced the background fish that is the shadow wall for the verre eglomise.

someday I will finish this work. btw: some of the white areas is paint, other white areas is aluminum leaf, other white areas is where the light shows through from behind, other white areas is the surface light reflection.

best

deb.
