Way To Go Team!

The 2011 Horribles Parade is in the books and the complete list of thank-yous will be coming along with videos from the beginning stages of building the GMG Float right on through to the award ceremony along with more comprehensive photos of the entire crew from Manny Simoes and David Cox.

There’s not much more fun that you can have than walk with your family and friends in the greatest parade of them all, The Fishtown Horribles Parade!

Our man Craig Kimberley got some incredible footage along the parade route which will take some time to edit down but he tells me we will have a short video trailer some time today and the longer more comprehensive version later on.

Sista Felicia on lead once again proves why she’s the best at what she does and that’s why I have complete confidence in her.

I had zero to do with the construction of the Float, all the thanks go to the following people-

Bro-In Law Barry, Sista Felicia, Ed Collard, Jeremy Frost Construction, our mother “Mammaw”, Next Door Neighbor Dianna (whose last name I’d never get right in a million years) Frank, Joey and Mikayla Ciolino,Taylor Frost and Amandacakes and BJ.  Paulie Walnuts  printed up the limited run t-Shirts and Greg Harris’ Briarwood Landscaping  provided us with the trailer.  Frank and Joey Ciolino did the truck detailing.  Will Hunt  donated the PA system.

All our GMG peeps who showed up to walk and bring the energy including our title sponsor Vickie Van Ness and Johnny on the Sound system.  Ed Collard was a man possessed on sticker duty.  Mammaw who tried to make sure the kids who were out of reach for candy still got some along the route.  The Ryan clan- Patrick J-WOW, Molly and Emma who showed up and worked the crowd along with a roller skating Paul Morrison!

Our Squirt Gunners Connor and Kyle Frost,Seth Murray and BJ (Beasley).  Danny Powers and Sarah Francis,Lexi Orlando, Caroline Murray and Emma powers along with Amandacakes and Snoop Maddie Mad on Candy Patrol.  Manny Simoes and David Cox for capturing it in pictures (which we will see in future postings).

Our lobsters- Lanie and Skyler Noble and The Bean.   Our Homies- Vickie and Johnny Van Ness, Emma Powers and Deanna (Whose last name I’ll never get right in a million years).  Our mermaids, Emma and Molly Ryan, Taylor Frost.

And how bout that Craig Kimberly on video duty who goy a ton of footage with multiple cameras of the community along the parade route!

We had lobsters, we had mermaids, we had homies, but most of all we had each other to share and make even more new memories in the community we love.

You guys are the best!

Did You Know? (Love and Wedding Bells in the Air)

That George Tzortzis is an old-school kind of guy?  He came to Rocky Neck to search out Eric Kaplan, his girlfriend Julie’s Dad, to ask his permission to marry his daughter.  George had come into the gallery yesterday while he was waiting for Eric to come home and talked about his plans.  He then bought a Did You Know? Book.  I offered to sign it for him, but he wanted to wait until he knew the outcome of everything.  Last evening Eric came in and said he had given his blessings, and it was now all up to Julie.  George had set up a romantic scene at Hammond Castle, where he proposed to Julie, on bended knee, on the stairs of the castle; and Julie said yes.  Today the three of them came in to share the good news, and get the book signed, which could now include congratulations to the two of them.  Such a sweet couple and nice Dad/father-in-law to be, and now everyone out there in GMG land can wish them well.

Did You Know? (Mug Up)

Happy Almost Independence Day

That the monkey bread miraculously made it intact from Rockport to Mug Up at Rocky Neck this morning?  Here you see the proof with Paul Morrison holding up the prize (thank you Paul for your generous and delicious offering).  Ed Collard took his rightful place at the head of the table, right beside the super special Lattof Farm monkey bread.  Youngest mug uppers this morning were wharf neighbors Dahlia (3 months old, being held by newest Madfish Wharf artist, Gigi Mederos) and Lily, with their mom Violet.  R. Duck was in attendance, but on a tight leash because she has been wandering a bit too much lately and went missing for 4 days.  Greg Bover made the long journey back from Harvard Yard to join us, and Pete and Joyce Chamberlain were in the house, along with Stevie and some new visitors to the Neck.  Finally, Gloucesterites, Kelly and Kai Rich stopped in for a GMG sticka and T-shirt for Kelly to wear to the parade today.  Mug Up is held every Sunday morning at 10:00 at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck.  Put it on your calendar and join us.  Coming attractions: next Sunday there is rumor that we will again be blessed with some of Paul Morrison’s amazing smoked bluefish pate’ (amazing stuff!).

‘Twas the Night Before the Horribles

GMG contributor Terry Weber files this preparation of the Fishtown Horribles Parade organizers.-

‘Twas the night before the Horribles, when work was done at a clip,
Not a committee member was resting, not even Al Kipp;

The frames for the floats were constructed with care,
In hopes the parade would be the best in years;
The children were helping and looking ahead,
While visions of fireworks danced in their heads;
The parade was in doubt, and once ready to fade,

But the faithful and true, stepped in with some aid;

May the little city by the sea always keep within sight,

Its culture, its heart–its own guiding light;

A Happy Horribles to all, and to all a good night!

rocky neck GALLERY update

1_ClaudiaKaufman_Ellen's kitchenContemporary realist painter Claudia Kaufman’s “Simply Looking: Looking Simple,” the third in the Rocky Neck Gallery Summer Artist Series, opens Wednesday, July 6 and runs until Tuesday, July 19. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, July 9, from 5-8 p.m. The public is invited.

Kaufman lives in Marblehead and is a member of the North Shore, Rockport, and Marblehead Art Associations and the Copley Society of Art. Her work has been shown in many Boston area exhibitions. She worked as a commercial artist in New York City followed by a career as marketing executive/creative director of a national healthcare technology company.

She studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine arts in Boston, Mass College of Art and most recently completed a post baccalaureate residency program in painting at Brandeis University.
Kaufman says, “As a contemporary realist painter, my works are studies in observation… still life set-ups of familiar objects that are deceptively simple, yet complex. Stopping short of photo-realism, I work to keep the signs of my hand and brushstroke in my work and am particularly intrigued by the drama of light, transparency, reflection and strong shadows.”

2011 GMG Horribles Parade Float Preview and Horribles Parade and Fireworks Info

The picture above this text is as much as Sista Felicia will let me show you as there have already been reports of spies in and around GMG float building headquarters.

The team has been working around the clock and I can safely say this is their best effort yet.  Can’t wait to see all of you along the parade route and if we haven’t met please be sure to introduce yourself and cheer on the GMG float.  We will have limited amount of GMG stickers version 5.0 so if you don’t have one come ask me for one (thanks Frank Ciolino and Shew for producing them and Beth Swan for designing them) also Candy Galore (175lbs worth) to pass out.

The kids are fired up and the adults are exhausted but the results are astounding.

Papa Dunes Writes-

Located on Hesperus Ave. in Gloucester, MA, Hammond Castle is a Medieval Castle open to the public.

The history of uninhabited Norman’s Woe is the history of its many shipwrecks. One noted shipwreck was of the “Rebecca Ann” in March, 1823. In a snowstorm, all ten crewmembers were swept out to sea, and one survived by holding on to a rock in the water. Perhaps the most famous shipwreck at Norman’s Woe was of the schooner “Favorite” out of Wiscasset, Maine, in December 1839. Twenty bodies washed ashore, among them that of an older woman lashed to a piece of the ship. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow took that story and named the ship “Hesperus” after a wreck near Boston in creating the legend of “The Wreck of the Hesperus,” the most famous “shipwreck” associated with Norman’s Woe.
