What Paul describes so perfectly in this interview and the sc ene he depicts in his paintings are exactly the scenes from our wharf. Those scales, those jitterbugs, those wooden boxes.
I could tell you that when Frankie and I were 12 years old our father’s would order trailer loads of those broken boxes because they could get them cheap and we would spend all day long fixing the boxes in the summer heat. It was so god damned monotonous- ughhhhh! I hated to see that trailer back down the driveway. Thankfully everything now goes into plastic fish totes.
Our culling table looked exactly the way he depicts it in his painting, our forkruck (well our forktruck is still ancient) but the scene of loading the box trucks with pallets of fish still is true to life. He captured it all so perfectly.

I love what he describes as “A Day Off” – really only a day not-at-sea. This was a typical experience for kids now in their 60’s … now lost to two generations.
Just like the cattle drive I worked in Montana can only exist because of us City-Slickers who paid to join in.
Don’t know the future of Gloucester fishing, but author Mark Kurlansky has some ideas in his book ‘The Last Fish Tale’ which he talked about in an interview we have on GloucesterArtists.com.
