Announcing the Winner 2010 “Coolest Mom”

CAPE POND ICE COMPANY ANNOUNCES

OUR

2010 MOTHER’S DAY “Coolest Mom” CONTEST WINNERS!

Cape Pond Ice would like to thank all the proud children who submitted essays and photos for the “2010 Coolest Mom Contest.” All of the nominated “Moms” clearly qualified for the award in the eyes of their proud child. All essays and photographs uniquely presented just how “Cool” their Moms are!

CAPE POND ICE HAS CHOSEN 3 WINNERS FOR 2010 “COOLEST MOM!”

Rebecca Martins of Biddeford, ME

Kim Cabral of Gloucester, MA

Erika Hansen of Gloucester, MA

All 3 Grand Prize Winners will receive

The “Coolest Gals Gift Basket.”

Catherine Martins from Biddeford, Maine nominated her mother, Rebecca, for her countless hours, passion and dedication working to get laws passed to prevent deaths due to medical error and negligence. Catherine says her mom “is always there to lend a listening and caring ear”.

Gemma McCarley of Gloucester nominated her mother Erika Hansen. Gemma states that her mother is “the most abstract, creative and caring person. We disagree on most everything but our discussions have made me think of a new way to embrace life…. My mother means everything to me. I take for granted the pure sweet moments when we lay on the couch reading without uttering a word, feeling that I have just experienced a great miracle and I have.”

Gianna Cabral of Gloucester nominated her mother, Kim, for “cheering me up when I feel down and always putting a smile on my face. My mom always works the hardest and longest to support our family, never gives up and does the best she can do. She is the best mom you could ever imagine. My mom teaches me to never give up and follow my dreams. When I grow up I want to be just like my mom.”

Cape Pond Ice Company would like to thank all who participated in this year’s “Coolest Mom” contest. All of the essays submitted were wonderful and in the eyes of the children making their nominations, you all are the

“COOLEST MOMS AROUND!’

Shoppin Local- From Donna and Barbara

As residents of the great city of Gloucester, we must impress again how much shopping, eating, banking and enjoying our local business establishments means.
If you shop at a chain store and you are short $1, the clerk cannot help you out.
Shopping at a local store, you can come back with the dollar.
If you cannot get a purchase in your car and the landscaping store is going your way with another delivery, they put will bring it to you. The banking establishments will call you if you have left your “Deposit Only Stamp” in the bank. Our wonderful eating establishments will make sure if you are allergic to something, it will not be served.
Again, going local is not just a saying; it is real and keeps our community strong. Thank you.

Hey Rabbit, is it true that the sand on Siesta Beach was formed from the Appalachian Mountains? 🙂

The Tide Inundates the Dog Bar

The Tide, featuring Gordon & Jock Baird and Dr. Keen
The Dog Bar
65 Main St,
Gloucester 978-281-6565
Saturday, May 8  9-12 p.m.

You have to be well behaved all week,  but Saturday is your night to play. Kick the family out and join The Gloucester Beatles, the singing  Baird Bros. to dance the night away, singing along to songs you haven’t heard for decades but you know every word to them. Songs that no other band will dare play, but wish they could. Eat, drink and be merry at Dog Bar, Gloucester’s rock’n’roll livingroom – the former White Rainbow –  it’s nothing but fun. Rave Reviews from the recent battle of the Bands bring the Tide in on a roll.

Artists, Teacher Studio Opportunity!

From Deb Clarke;

I’m looking at this loft space in Gloucester MA to open the Debbie Clarke “School for Drawing” and studios.  There are 2 private studios that will be available for short term/long term rental and teaching space available to artists to rent for workshops, etc.  I would like to move in June 1st.  So, if you are looking for short term or long term studio space, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss your needs.  This is a second floor space with west light.  The windows work, so there is ventilation.  I am an oil painter and am looking for other painters, teachers.  email to me at elli01930@yahoo.com

Blue Crab At Clearwater Bait and Tackle

Seems like a whole lot of work for not a whole lot of meat. But people line up for em so there must be something to it.

I’m thinking that it’s the “Slap Ya Mama” seasoning that must take them over the top

Countertop At My Favorite Cigar Bar In the World- King Corona In Ybor City

Every time I go to Tampa to visit my buddy DK I can’t wait to get to King Carona, order up a coffee, light up a nice cigar and relax in the chairs set up along the street in Ybor right out in front of King Carona. The people watching is some of the best anywhere with the young couples, tattood folks, gays, brothers, club goers, families and street denizens.
As good as the people watching is, hanging out with your best friends over a cigar on your own time is about as good as it gets.

Crawfish at Clearwater Bait and Tackle

I’m not exactly sure what seafood and Elvis have to do with each other but hey we’re in Clearwater- a delightfully redneck quirky town.

Seasonal Openings Part III

The list of what has opened is long so I am switching modes to only speak of Cape Ann eateries about to open or changes in hours as spring turns to summer. Speaking of summer, how do you like the summer weather? It only rains on Monday and Tuesday? Last year and 1986 it seemed like it only rained on Saturday and Sunday. No more of that. Hot and humid here on out.

The Cupboard: Latest rumors all point to the Cupboard Opening tomorrow, Thursday, May 6. Today is Cinco de Mayo but tomorrow is “Seis de Mayo por la almejas fritas”. Works for me. Please do not chase me down if they do not open on Thursday. Their Facebook page is requesting job applications. Unfortunately my daughter has another month of eighth grade.

They have to be open by Saturday and I will be there to get some onion rings and a fish sandwich. I just got my camera out of hock so I might even be able to take a photo instead of these blurry iPhone shots. (Sorry about that again Jerry Remy burger.)

The Rudder: I was all excited about reading in the Gloucester Daily Times yesterday that the Rudder was going to be open year round. But reviewing Joey’s interview of Jeanie Boland last fall after the renovation and using my keen reading comprehension on the GDT story I now realize they may be open only to private functions in the winter. We need to change that. Every time you eat there make sure you mention how much you want The Rudder to stay open year round. Duckworths can do it and so can the Rudder.

But for now, The Rudder is Thursday to Saturday open at 5PM then on June 17th they will be open all week through the summer.

Fun Fact: My brother Chris just told me he ran the raw bar at The Rudder in the 80s. So did he kill anyone off? 8)

My Warm Weaher Drink Of Choice When Away From Home- Stoli-O Tonic Prepared Here At Handsome Harry’s Naples, Fl

On warm days if I’m going to have a cocktail it’s usually an Stoli Oranj (Stoli-O in the bar trade) and tonic.  It is smoothand refreshing and while some flavored vodkas can have an aftertaste which I’m not fond of Stoli-O on a hot day when on vacation and I don’t have access to my favorite local Beauport vodka will suit me just fine.

I had *ahem* a few of these last night 🙂
