From The Site-

18 Haven was the address of the home and studios of Ken and Elizabeth Vincent. Originally bought as a summer home in 1950’s from realtor Ray Kierman they took permanent residency there years later.

“Why do you want to go anyplace else when you’re already HERE!” – Kenneth Vincent

Elizabeth and Ken met in Ogunquit, ME sometime in the early 1920’s. Elizabeth’s parents regularly spent their summers in Ogunquit and Ken’s parents sent him there to paint and live in a fishing shack.

Elizabeth aspired to be a writer but also enjoyed painting, gardening, and cooking. She loved the wild blueberry and bayberry bushes around the yard of 18 Haven Avenue. She often did paintings from slides or photos that she had taken during their travels to Europe, or around New England. She loved reading cookbooks, art books, and both Sunday edition New York Times and Boston Globe.

Kenneth Vincent

Kenneth Vincent

Ken started his career in New York, doing work with his brother in-law on the Perry Como show. He later went to Newell-Emmett/Cunningham & Walsh as a “bull pen” artist and to Campbell-Ewald, where he became Creative Director. Campbell-Ewald offered Ken a position as Vice President, which would have meant moving the family to Detroit. He refused, moved the family to Rockport, and opened Kenneth Vincent Advertising.

Kenneth Vincent Advertising worked on many projects with local businesses on Cape Ann including: Gloucester Paint, Cape Ann Savings Bank, Bomco, and The Building Center.

Ken and Elizabeth had five children together.
In August of 2012 their son Peter Vincent passed away. Boxes and boxes of negatives, slides, and films were found and the estate asked me to look after them. The first goal for me was to make sure everything was safe. Then, over time, I want to put something together for the family; hopefully, the long-term goal would be to create a book. Though as I looked at many of the images, there seemed to be a need to share some of these images and stories immediately with family and the larger community of Cape Ann, historic designer, and local families.

This is how www.18haven.com came to be.

Peter Vincent, The Man and the Sea

Peter Vincent, The Man and the Sea

Atlantic Moon by Peter Vincent

On Tuesday, at the family plot in Marblehead, we buried the ashes of my uncle Peter Vincent. It seemed fitting that it started down pouring rain before the small ceremony of family members. All we needed was some wind to recreate some of the raw feeling of the fisherman on the decks of many of Peters etchings and paintings.

Eoin By Peter Vincent

As I try to clear my mind to reflect on the passing of my uncle, artist, teacher and friend, I think of the complexities that made this man a man that strived to be simple. He was an artist that changed the concept of what marine painting could and should be. He studied everything around him and brought the emotion and strength of the Gloucester and Nova Scotia fishermen in their sloops to life. With the creation of the face of the strong men of the sea and the pain and trials that came with the work.

Peter’s paintings are in many private and museum collections, and over the years he has received many awards recognizing his outstanding work. The Rockport Art Association, Mystic Seaport, Copley Society and the Cape Ann Historical Association are a few of the arts organizations that have honored him and his work

Nights on the Neck

From the Beacon:

The Rocky Neck Art Colony will hold its first 2009 Nights on the Neck evening of gallery receptions and entertainment on Thursday, June 4, from 5-9 p.m.

The evening will feature:

Three Sheets to the Wind: The Schooner Adventure spawned Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of musicians and crew members who are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.

Rick Berlin: Rick Berlin sings honest narrative (sometimes funny) songs from the torn pocket of the heart. Rick’s past credits in the Boston music scene include Orchestra Luna/Luna, Berlin Airlift, Rick Berlin–The Movie, Rome is Burning, Rick Berlin-The Awful Truth, and The Shelley Winters Project.

Eoin Vincent: In November 2007, Eoin Vincent visited and photographed 18 orphanages, schools, and hospitals near Arusha, Tanzania. Vincent will give a slide show and a talk about his book (proceeds from the book will benefit charities for the people of Tanzania).

Gordon Baird: Gordon Baird will bounce around between show tunes and comedic renditions of familiar classics, tailored to a Glosta sensibility and a Rocky Neck state of mind.

Events take place on Rocky Neck Avenue, East Gloucester.
