Amanda Maderia, director of education programs at Maritime Gloucester writes, “Confirming Iain’s comments about believing the whales seen off our coast are likely Right Whales: We have observed some incredible plankton tows the last two days. From a few passes from our docks with our net, the sample has looked pretty clear most of the winter, but as you can see from yesterday’s sample, it looks almost blood red thick with Calenoid copepods, a huge food source for the North Atlantic Right Whale.
Looking at the overhead shot, the bucket on the left is from our plankton tow, and a close up of that to follow. This is what one looks like under the microscope.
The plankton haul was discovered by Waring School students who come to Maritime Gloucester once a week for the spring semester. They use it as their field station for John Wigglesworth’s oceans and climate course.
Wednesday morning, May 16th, students will be having a poster presentation of their work in the Gorton Gallery at Maritime Gloucester from 10:30-11:30.

It was a really pretty night for last evening’s special events: the Schooner Festival Mayor’s Reception hosted at Maritime Gloucester and the Main Street Block Party.
Mayor Romeo Theken with Daisy Nell. Mayor Theken holds a new original Sam Parisi painted oar that would be auctioned off later for the Schooner Festival. I heard Senator Tarr but did not hear the results!
The connecting dock between Maritime Gloucester and Solomon Jacobs Park is awesome!

Maritime Gloucester, located at 23 Harbor Loop in downtown Gloucester, will host its annual Heritage Day celebration from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The event is free to the public.
4:30 pm to 8:30 pm Gloucester House Public Clambake
Music, food and a whole lot of fun. The cost is only $16 for Lobster, Corn and Cornbread.
5:15 pm to 5:45 pm Carillon Concert at Our Lady of Good Voyage, final concert of the summer series can be heard throughout the downtown Gloucester area.
6:30 pm to 10:00 pm Concert on Stacy Boulevard
Live music and light effects on Stacy Boulevard with a break during the fireworks.
7:00 pm Fireworks Viewing Party at Beauport, the Sleeper McCann House.

Over the summer, our East Gloucester neighborhood kids Atticus, Meadow, Pilar, Frieda, Lucas, and Sabine formed the club Plastic: Pick it Up!, a kid’s campaign for getting plastic off roadways and beaches so it doesn’t end up in our oceans. Through their lemonade stand, the club raised a whopping 540.00!! On Wednesday evening they, along with Jackson, visiting cousin from North Carolina, met with members of Cape Ann Maritime Partnership (CAMP) to donate the money raised to help purchase a Seabin and Marine Skimmer, marine technologies designed to clean up oil and plastic garbage.

CAMP is a relatively newly formed partnership between NOAA’s Marine Debris Program, Gloucester’s Clean City Commission, One Ocean One Love, Seaside Sustainability, Maritime Gloucester, and Gloucester’s Coast Guard Station.
The event took place at the beautiful printing headquarters and shop of Jamie Mathison and sister Sarah Steward, One Ocean One Love. Jamie is the owner and artist, and sister Sarah is the general manager. From the shop’s website: “One Ocean One Love shop is a hand-printed, surf-inspired clothing brand, offering one of a kind ocean related products in stores and online. We’re a small eco-friendly business made up of forward-thinkers, with a passion to conserve and protect marine life. 5% of all One Ocean apparel net profits are donated toward keeping the oceans clean.”

The cooperative exhibit will include educational activities and interactive exhibits designed to engage visitors in the rich maritime heritage of Essex County. The exhibit is behind the Moakley Courthouse, dockside to many of the Essex Built vessels participating in Sail Boston 2017. Join us as we celebrate Essex county’s maritime past, showcase the current work being done to preserve maritime traditions in the present while continuing to inspire and educate students –keeping these vibrant traditions alive and well into the future.”
Save the date- meet the artist. June 3, Rocky Neck. Dozens of sculpture and wall works by local artist Liz Sibley Fletcher will be available for a special one day sale to benefit Maritime Gloucester and Pathway.
Liz Fletcher – Old Frog Pond Farm & Studio Annual Sculpture Walk around the pond and through the woods
Since graduating from Mass. College of Art in 1970, Liz Fletcher has worked in clay as a sculptor, potter, and teacher. She is an exhibiting member of the NH Art Association and the League of NH Craftsmen, showing her work around New England and as far as Georgia, Texas, and the state of Washington. Living in the woods, Fletcher became concerned about human impacts on the land. After getting a Masters degree in Resource Management at Antioch New England, she assisted the Nashua River Watershed Association with open space planning, coordinating their Greenway program to protect the rivers of the region. “The wonders of the natural world inspire me, as do the absurdities of the human condition, which is often not beautiful but sometimes humorous! People often sense a narrative quality in my work — the images speak, telling stories. Life forms fascinate me. I love to shape clay into creatures and strange beings whose combinations of human, beast, and bone embody the interpenetration of the natural and human worlds, of geologic time and daily life. We’re all in it together — voyaging in this great mysterious universe.”

In the next day or so, the Schooner Adventure will be leaving the Jodrey State Fish Pier and returning to her home at Maritime Gloucester! Look for the Adventure making her way across the Harbor.
As Captain Stefan Edick is assuming more responsibilities in his executive director role, Captain Willy Leathers (above) will be commanding the Schooner. An absolutely fantastic season of education, adventure, and sailing events is scheduled for 2017.
