November in the Matz Gallery: Laureen Adrienne Maher’s “Birdseye View”

This month the Adolph Matz Gallery features the work of Laureen Adrienne Maher. “Birdseye View” is her largest body of work and features many images of the old Birdseye building as it stands today. You will see the dilapidation and gritty character that this site brings to our unique cityscape … if only for a little while more. Birdseye View is also the title of the large centerpiece of this exhibit: three 18 x 24 canvases dressed in oils and mounted on a stucco-like background.

 This show is dedicated to her late husband, Steve DeBoer, who supported her painting efforts wholeheartedly and loved Gloucester and the cast of characters and artists that make up this City. “Everywhere I go people are talking about what is happening around the old Birdseye building. All I know is I had a great time painting it!”

Laureen was published in the Gloucester Times in March 2010 and 2011. Both articles featured her florals and popular series, called Catch of the Day, which depicts our great local rock stars including Allen Estes, Fly Amero, and Willie “Loco” Alexander. In recent years she has exhibited locally at Lone Gull, Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck, and The Bodin Historic Gallery. The latter carries Snack Bar at Good Harbor Beach which is one of her most popular reproductions.

Laureen resides in beautiful East Gloucester. She owns Beauty Bar at 12 Parker Street where she cuts and colors hair and exhibits her artwork year-round. New works are in progress for her upcoming late Spring exhibit to be held at Beauty Bar. She also participates in the Sawyer Free Library Annual Art Auction each year.

5 POINTZ – Aerosol Art Center

I was in New York for a couple of days and read about the Aerosol Art Center at 45 Davis Street in Long Island City. A mecca for graffiti (Aerosol Art) where the building owner has allowed artists to put their work on the walls of this 200,000 SF property.  Organized through 5Pointz, permits have been awarded to the artists and each work stays for a set time and then is replaced with a new creation. Unfortunately, the property is now scheduled for demolition to make way for a couple of new condo towers, so i headed over to get some pictures before it is gone. If in NYC this is worth checking out! Great artwork and a unique setting!

State Pier Art Rock Found

The “Art Rock” I left at the State Fish Pier last week has been found. Thanks for the Email Wilmarie.

I found an ArtRock!! So excited to have one of your beautiful rocks, Im from Havervill, but Ive been wanting one of those since I started to be a big fan of GMG. I went to the State Fish Pier and happens that Gloucester not only let me enjoy the beautiful view, but gave me a beautiful reminder of a great day! Now is part of my Glosta collection.

The Sawyer Free Library Art Auction is Heating up!

The Bid Book is filling up. Get a great deal on great artwork from some of Cape Ann’s Famous and emerging Artists.

Works of art will be displayed in the Adolph Matz Gallery, located in the main lobby of the library, and can be viewed by all that enter the library each day. Great interest in generated through the month as the bid book fills up. The final vocal auction is always an exciting event. In addition to funding art books, art DVDs, and a select number of museum passes, this year’s proceeds will support free art workshops for adults and children as well as an art movie series in the Fall and Winter.

Sawyer Free Library Annual Art Auction 2013

The Bidding Has Started!

 

The 2013 Annual Art Auction will take place on Wednesday, October 2, 2013. the silent auction will take place in the Adolph Matz Gallery from August 26, to give visitors and opportunity  to see the paintings and bid early. The vocal auction will be held October 2 at 7:00 p.m. A preview party will precede the auction.

‘From Ships to Shores’: Doryman left fishing to pursue painting

The son of a Gloucester fisherman, the late Paul Francis Frontiero Sr., began fishing with his father at the age of 12.

He did not know then that this would become his way of life for many years. He never finished Gloucester High School because his father was injured while fishing and he had to leave his studies. As a result, he spent many years laboring in jobs at sea.

Frontiero, born in 1925, even worked as a doryman, an avocation that became extinct; with the innovation of the motorized trawler, the dory fishing industry began to wither in the late 1930s. However, he remained in demand on the port’s fishing vessels because of his skills as an engineer and cook.

Paul Frontiero (1925- 2012)

Paul Frontiero was born and brought up in Gloucester, a native of the Cape Ann area.  Paul not only comes from a long line of fishermen ancestry but was a fisherman himself, for over half of his life-time.

He fished from as far south as the Diamond Shoals of the Carolina’s to as far north as the Grand Banks off St. John’s, Newfoundland and Canada.

The many hours Paul spent in the small dories made him realize the expansiveness of the sea, at times so calm and then again a raging fury.  Although he painted other subject matter, most of his paintings are of his life on the sea.  As a boy on the boats, he would often rough pencil sketch on anything that was at hand – paper bags, old wooden planks, and even on the side of the same dories that he spent so many hours on.  Each and every painting has a spiritual quality that reveals Paul’s deep love for the sea.

Jason Burroughs’ art at The Hive

Yesterday evening at The Hive (on Pleasant Street, less than a block up from Main Street, on the right) there was an opening of an art show by Jason Burroughs in their back room. It was accompanied by a concert by a variety of bands. I stopped in to snag some photos! Jason is an up-and-coming local artist, who also works in the programs offered at The Hive and Art Haven.

He will also be in the gallery during the block party today. Stop by to see the art and meet the artist! And maybe buy a print or an original… Get it before he gets famous and the prices go up!

StudioVo (121r East Main St., open “by chance or by appointment”) is today’s addition to my series on second-hand stores. It started off with just the “business commercial and graphic art needs” and fine art, but since late last year has also been selling antiques and collectibles!

Deej and Bob Viau pack a lot into a small shack!  While I was there, Bob was working on another “lobster” Adirondack chair (as featured by Joey in a previous post). I had a nice chat with them and was considering buying a beautiful carved wooden table that is very reasonably priced… but where would I put it??  I ended up leaving with a pair of beautiful pottery mugs that Deej gave me after I went gaga over them…

I think this is one of the charms of several of our antiques/collectibles/consignment stores here in Gloucester: they combine the second-hand items with work by locally artists, sometimes including “re-purposed” items in the art itself.

Phil Cusumano, artist/captain, and volunteer juror for the 2013 HarborWalk Public Art Challenge administered by the Committee for the arts, stopped by to inspect the public art in process on Parsons Street. The artist, James Owen Calderwood, was being filmed for an interview by Lisa Smith for Cape Ann TV. Dale Brown of the Committee for the Arts was there, too.

Though difficult for painting, the off and on rain does provide opportunities for visiting. Last week there were business meetings, here with Sarah Garcia Harbor Planning Director.

While there, we were privileged to witness GREAT news hot off the press and an intensity enough to match their vibrant space! TAG team members wrote and were awarded a $10,000 grant. Congratulations all!

Next time we’ll head down Parsons over to see the permanent public art installation at Maritime Gloucester museum. The twelve foot diameter compass rose is being installed on city property where the HarborWalk crosses onto Maritime Gloucester. Two artists installing new public art downtown and connections—very exciting news.

Rocky Neck Gallery is pleased to announce the fourth show of the Summer Artist Series featuring artist Brenda Cirioni and her exhibit Marsh as Metaphor.  This dramatic new show opens Wednesday, July 24 and runs for three weeks until August 13.  Meet Brenda Cirioni and learn about her intriguing creative process at an artist’s reception on Saturday, July 27 from 5-7 PM.  

Cirioni’s paintings, consisting of mixed media on panel, are energetic, thought provoking and beautiful depictions of nature.  This new series is inspired by her family home burning to the ground when she was sixteen.  While touching upon utter destruction, her paintings are celebratory, bursting with color and regeneration. 

In this series she explores the tension between nature and the elements.  Her work is about the power of transformation within nature and within us.  Cirioni paints the background composition, then draws, splatters and drips with acrylic ink and paint creating a surface rich with texture, color and movement.  She enlarges on the composition with torn paper scraps, feathers, fiber and other debris.  Her method of layering and juxtaposing disparate materials draws attention to the multiplicities and mysteries of nature and life.

15+ Things to do on a RAINY DAY & a classic video

Visiting Gloucester?  Have friends in from out of town?  You’re probably complaining to yourself that the weather isn’t cooperating, right?  Not to worry!  There’s lots to do in Gloucester and Cape Ann when the weather is lousy.  Just be glad you’re not on Cape Cod, where there really isn’t much to do except go to the beach.

Just to see what he’d say I asked a friend, who grew up in Gloucester and now lives in NYC (owns a bar and writes for a New York Time Blog) why would New Yorkers come here instead of Cape Cod.  Here’s the mini rant he wrote back:

Gloucester is a place for culture now, just like it was in the 1800s and 1900s. Contemporary culture is actually at its best here, maybe more so than any Mass city other than Boston and Cambridge.  Where else can you buy fresh caught fish, see a great play, hear Henri Smith play a bar or watch the Met opera in 3D, attend a reading by a national author, eat lobster in the rough or a 3-star style meal, hike, jump quarries, dive off rocks into the ocean (there are no rocks on Cape Cod), mountain bike, drink a $2 beer in barroom full of fisherman, see the most beautiful boats in the world, go to a world class museum, etc etc. 

You nailed it Ray!  Below the video, we’ve listed another 15 things you can do on a rainy day.  Just be glad you don’t live in England, where you wouldn’t expect the sun.  As John Lennon put it in the Beatles classic, “I Am the Walrus”:

Castle Manor Does it With Flair

Last evening was the opening reception for the East Goes West exhibit of works by Rocky Neck artists at Castle Manor Inn.  All I can say is, Castle Manor knows how to put on an event with a flair.  The function space looked beautiful, as did every other space in the Inn and restaurant, and the grounds are peaceful and meticulously maintained.  Appetizers and champagne served by a very professional and friendly staff were delicious.  Attendees were treated to tours of the exhibit and a sampling of rooms in the Inn, which are lovely and tastefully appointed.

If you have a wedding, anniversary or other function coming up, or friends, family or business associates coming to visit, you owe it to yourself to check out Castle Manor Inn.  On a more regular tip – check out Sea Glass restaurant or just stop by the pub for a drink.   The exhibit will be up through August, so stop by any time and check out the artwork and Castle Manor Inn.
