Israel Horovitz’s Red Carpet Special on Cape Ann TV Tonight!

Lisa Smith submits ~

Cape Ann TV is airing  “Israel Horovitz’s ‘My Old Lady’ Red Carpet Special” tonight on Channel 12 at 9 pm. Join the talented and  glamorous Heidi Dallin as she interviews Cape Ann’s A-List who attended last weeks’s advanced screening of “My Old Lady” at the Cape Ann Community Cinema. The movie is directed by Gloucester Stage Company founder Israel Horovitz  and stars Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith. The screening was a benefit for the Gloucester Stage Company.

It is one big party on the red carpet, as Heidi talks to a sea of one name personalities from Cape Ann: Carolyn, Bruce, Ann-Margaret, and Sinikka, just to name a few. She also talks to Gail McCarthy and Desi Smith of the Gloucester Daily Times and Mark Shanahan from the Boston Globe’s ‘Names & Faces’.  The program ends with Israel’s introduction to the movie. He talks about what it is like to make a film in Paris, and working with Maggie Smith and Kevin Kline.

Ed Note ~ My Old Lady is playing at the Cape Ann Community Cinema through September 24th. For ticket information click here.

CAPE ANN FEATURED IN SALEM: ESSEX SCENIC BYWAY IN SALEM’S VISITOR CENTER

Cat Ryan submits-

Photos from grand opening celebration

After years of planning and partnering, a new Essex National Heritage Area Visitor Information Desk has been added inside the already wonderful Salem National Park Service Visitor Center.

From the press release:

“The new partnership between Essex Heritage and the National Park Service will provide the Visitor Center’s 375,000 annual visitors with information about attractions, destinations, restaurants, resources and more in Salem and throughout Essex County.”

Katherine and Ryan will be managing this important hub. Prior to this post they worked for 6 years at the Visitor Center. Bonus: they live on the North Shore, and they both grew up on the North Shore. They are excited to join Essex National Heritage.

The screen behind the desk featured several images from each Cape Ann town and many others.  Opening remarks from: Superintendent Michael Quijano-West of the National Parks; Annie Harris, CEO for Essex National Heritage; Josh Basseches from the Peabody Essex Museum; and Mayor of Salem, Kim Driscoll. Another Great Block Party!

StClairFoodwm BlockParty4804wmOur final Block Party of 2014 was a great success. As usual, the gallery was too busy for me to walk the street to take pictures. This time, I had the energy to enjoy the event, especially the people. A large cheese platter was generously provided by The Cave, our neighbor at 44 Main Street (http://www.thecavegloucester.com/). Key Block Party folks visited me, including Susan Parent (L) of Toodeloos (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Toodeloos/388111807754) and Block Party organizer Valerie Marcley (R). That’s me in the middle!

Skipper Dave Marciano of FV Hard Merchandise visits ENHA tour at Cape Pond Ice

Celebrity NatGeo Skipper Dave Marciano of FV Hard Merchandise stopped by Cape Pond during our ENHA Trails & Sails Saturday morning tour, to sign autographs and settle up his ice bill – he’d been by earlier with the boat – and also to model a Wicked Tuna / Wicked Ice t-shirt, which we traded for a fresh blue fin tuna steak…. — with Dave Marciano.

There’s a new Humpback Whale at Cape Pond Ice on Gloucester’s inner harbor – if you didn’t see one today out on a Gloucester whale watch, than come tomorrow, Sunday, or next Friday, Saturday or Sunday, for our free ENHA Trails & Sails Icehouse tours. Master Ice Sculptor Donald Chapelle of Brilliant Ice Sculpture is carving a “pod” of Humpbacks for our ice sculpture display, a smaller scale version of his life-size sculpture done in 2007 for Boston’s First Night…. and the first whale has definitely arrived, in all his fluking glory.

Apples!

Apples ©Kim Smith 2014 copy Blossom to Fruit ~ With all the delicious smells associated, from the heavenly sweet scent of apple blossoms wafting on the breeze of a bright spring day to the fresh aroma of fruit ripening in the warm September sun, not to mention pies and tarts baking in the oven!

Have you noticed that the foliage of pear, cherry, and apple trees looks exceptional this year? This is a far cry from the past several years when the winter moth took a tremendous toll on the trees. The very cold winter of last has put a damper on the moths devastating effects. A repeat of cold temperatures will give the trees and shrubs, such as maple, blueberry, and apple, which are most heavily afflicted by the moths, a second season to recover and grow in strength.

We’re opening up the bomb bay this Thursday, to welcome back those spirited jokesters who may inflict moderate to severe Blooz damage to your soul. I’m talking about that fabulous glottal gurgler (and drummambulator) Mr. Edd Scheer. He’s draggin’ in his musical buddies, Mr. Ricky “King” Russell , on Qatar and vogelsang, and the modishly-styled cutie-pie of tenor sax,Mr. Mario Perrett. Everybody sings, sometimes together and in tune, and everybody gets a turn to embarrass himself and/or make bad jokes. Something to see. Czech it out.

And then, on Saturday, why not grab some extra chewing gum, lube up with Hai Karate® and join “Madhouse” for some fun and alcoholic madness at Captain Carlo’s. John Keegan© and his voracious ants are ready to crawl up your leg once again and make you dizzy on the dance floor. Come celebrate the end of summer(???)!
And don’t forget: for those of you in the prune juice and Cheez-Whiz® crowd, there’s always a great free show with the Good Old Salty Jazz Band this coming Monday at The Rose Baker Senior Center. From 1 to 3 these kats wail the greatest old toons in the world! It’s a national treasure! Shame on you for ignoring it!

The Roseway Was Relaunched At The Gloucester Marine Railway on Tuesday Evening.

Hi Joey,

Tuesday evening just before high tide the Roseway was launched at the Gloucester Marine Railway.   The Roseway will stay docked at GMR through Tuesday, then cross the harbor to Maritime Gloucester where she will pick up some students then head out to sea.   She is a beauty!   Here are some photos of the launch.
