Windward Leeward’ exhibit blows into Cape Ann Museum

By Gloucester Daily Times Staff

On Saturday, March 6, Cape Ann Museum sails back from its winter hiatus with a reception to mark the opening of “Windward Leeward,” a stunning exhibition of ‘Dory Era’ paintings by one of New England’s most highly regarded contemporary maritime artists, Peter Vincent. His still, starkly composed images of Gloucester’s long-gone seafaring world are the artist’s reverent and powerfully moving tribute to his subject matter, and have won him numerous awards, including Mystic Seaport Museum’s first annual Thomas Hoyne Award. His “Men who go down to the sea” do not just inhabit, but haunt his works, as they continue to haunt their native harbor. The painting’s flat, muted tones suggest the calm before the storm; the perilous power of the sea to be at once livelihood and graveyard.

Flanagan’s Wake, Saturday night, March 6 at Gloucester Stage Company Organized by Eastern Point Day School

From Ally O’Connor-

For one night only in 2010, on Saturday, March 6, Flanagan’s Wake comes to the Gloucester Stage Company.  An interactive Irish wake that magically transports you to the Emerald Isle to mourn Flanagan, dear friend and cousin.  A cast of actors play the roles of Flanagan’s family and friends, toastin’ , singin’ and dancin’ with all the audience members – the “American cousins”.  This brilliant ensemble of Boston area improvisers, including several from Cape Ann and North of Boston, use suggestions from the audience to create improvised songs and stories about the man in the box.  Critics call Flanagan’s Wake “hilarious…rich and spontaneous…charming cast” (The Boston Globe), “Dead-funny…a good humored spoof” (Boston Herald) and “The funniest show you’ll ever see” (NBC TV).  With an almost sold out show, pre-purchase of remaining tickets is recommended and are $25.00. 0 Playwright, arts advocate to address seARTS event article from the GDT

from the Gloucester Daily Times-

An award-winning playwright and humorist who has become a leader in securing money for cultural development will serve as guest speaker tonight as the Cape Ann Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, seARTS, hosts its seventh annual meeting.

Dan Hunter, a founding partner of Hunter Higgs LLC, an advocacy and communications firm specializing in cultural nonprofit organizations, will serve as chief speaker for the event, set to run tonight from 6 to 8:30 at Rockport Art Association on Main Street in Rockport.

Hunter is the former executive director of the Massachusetts Advocates for the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities (MAASH), a statewide advocacy and education group.

As MAASH director, Hunter successfully campaigned for cultural facilities grants and an increase of 70 percent in overall cultural funding during a time when the total state budget increased by only 14 percent, noted seARTS board member Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco.

Local Art

We have some VERY talented people among us in Gloucester MA. One of them is local artist Kathy Roberts.

Here is a little Bio about Kathy Roberts:

One can express themselves in many ways. Creativity can be inspired by your imagination, resourcefulness or a vision you may have; something you are working towards. I choose to express myself through watercolor painting. A medium that requires dedication and persistents, but allows you to choose your favorite paint brush, color palette, and paper and finish with a painting of something you have interpreted, your own vision. I enjoy painting fresh flowers, landscapes, seascapes and still lives using lots of color.

I am a native of Gloucester, MA, a seacoast community, which has inspired and challenged me to capture its natural surroundings. Those include the views of the inner harbor, studying our numerous beaches, its shifting sands, dunes and changing tides. Daily walks around the backshore, call my attention to the changing sunlight on the warm, rugged rocks and the forceful ocean waves splashing against them. And of course our native spring and summer flowers have always inspired me to paint my interpretation of their shapes, vibrant colors and delicate beauty.

Artists often are drawn to subjects that have a strong emotional appeal. For me it is Cape Ann’s scenic coast, where I spent all my summers at the beach as a child and still do as an adult. I always feel at peace when I am painting in that environment. I look to capture the essence of a place and convey the emotion I feel with the viewer. Being on location helps me to maintain a spontaneous approach.

Do Not Go To Rockport Art Association

The oldest art association in America opened it’s doors this weekend for another season. I’ve lived in Rockport for all of 17 months and I never stopped by until today. I knew there were some painters who were pretty good in Rockport but this place blew me away. Room after room of mesmerizing art.

Two killer treats. One, the Winter Group Show is just amazing. Want to feel the warmth of summer on Good Harbor Beach or a backlit green wave crashing at Andrew’s Point just walk through this gallery.

The other treat was in the back. Huge sunlit room and a dozen painters going at it. They were taking paintings which have been in the association for years and copying them. But copying is a cheap word for the works they were producing . One, a painter who was taking a shot at what his grandmother had painted 50 years before. To name names and explain would require 4,000 words so I am pulling the plug here.

Why do I want you to not go? Because my birthday present is still back there hanging on the wall. I need a second pass to decide as I narrow it down. So I do not want you or anyone else to visit the Rockport Art Association this week and steal my birthday present. That is unless you are dropping it off at my house on my birthday. Now it would be really dumb to say a Ray Crane and a Paul Ciaramitaro are the two I am zeroing in on. That is unless you rush down to get them for me.

Gallo Productions and Joe Langhan

Yesterday morning we banged out three interview style short videos at Gallo Productions located at 11 Center St.

The team of Joe Langhan who was involved with starting the Food Network and Gianni Gallo who owns and operates Gallo Productions are producing serious video in house.  I never knew it existed at this location and I certainly had no idea of the scope of Gianni’s work which takes him all over the world.

There are no signs on the building to tell you what is going on in there.  Hell even my third guest Jonathan Pope- co-president of the Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Association couldn’t find it even after walking up and down the street for a good while.

Once you enter the doors and see the production facility and how professional the whole set up is you would be proud to have these types of pros part of the working culture of our City.   These aren’t hacks like me, this is an internnational media business and it is based right out of our City of Gloucester.

I want to reiterate something so that it sinks in in case I didn’t drive it home the first time.  Today’s technology means that this type of production facility and these types of talented media magnates such as Gianni Gallo and Joe Langhan do not need to locate here.  They can broadcast Hi Definition television from Boston, New York, LA- wherever they chose.  The content that Gianni films is all over the world.

But they chose to work here.  In Gloucester.  That should tell you something.  This is a great place we have here my friends.

W. G. Brown’s Department Store

I was in the Cape Ann Historical Museum on 27 Pleasant Street, doing a project and came across a painting I had not seen in years.  W. G. Brown’s Department store was the place to buy that special gift, and hanging on the wall was this massive painting of the owner.

In the museum library, there it was on the wall where I was taking photos of old Captains Courageous books.  I extend many thanks to Rhonda Faloon and Stephanie Bucks who have helped me so much the past few days.

I thought I would share with your readers.

Vintage Gloucester Ad- Sea Tang! Davis Bros Atlantic Ocean Mackerel

Thank you to Monkeyfist who sent a link to this vintage Gloucester ad along.

But now down to business.  SEA TANG? Seriously, they went with SEA TANG?

I don’t know about you but that sounds dirty to me.

I wonder what the ad execs were thinking about when they thought that one up.  It must have come from the Mad Men at Sterling Cooper. 🙂

Let’s just hope your sea tang doesn’t taste like mackerel. -Just sayin’

EVERYBODY IS READING CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS video By Manuel Simoes

Manny happened to be casually strolling through town yesterday and by golly wouldn’t you know that everyone is so excited about the upcoming Captains Courageous Festival organized by seARTS on March 6th from 9:00AM-9:30PM that he started snapping photos of people reading the classic in anticipation.

Check out the incredible effort Manny put into this video capturing many of Gloucester’s characters-

From Manny-

Here’s the video of over fifty people reading Captains Courageous, at different establishments in Gloucester .  With the storm yesterday, I think most people may have curled up next to a warm fire and did some reading.   Gloucester Coffee Shops, like the Lone Gull and Pleasant Street Tea house, had everyone reading

Funky Egg Glue Video

I had trouble uploading the Egg  Glue Video to go along with Tuesdays Deb Clarke Post.

It’s A Cool and Funky How To Video.

Here’s Debbie Post;

Gilder’s glue, also known as gelatin ‘slurry’ is used to create verre eglomise mirrors, and can be applied other smooth surfaces to adhere gold or silver leaf. this video is an early attempt to create a how-to video with a very primitive editing program that chopped up my video with some wacky effects. if you would like clarification of the procedure for making the slurry, please let me know. one of by objectives for this year is to make a few more ‘how to’ videos about verre eglomise, egg tempera, drawing, other gilding methods or whatever catches my artistic fancy.
