COMMON EIDER DUCKLINGS AT CAPTAIN JOES!

Lobster Boat Arethusa and Crèche of Common Eider Hens and Ducklings

You never know what wonderful glimpses of wild life you may encounter at Captain Joe and Sons. Sunday morning during the podcast, a crèche of fourteen Common Eider ducklings and their mother hens were spotted, bobbing in the waves and foraging at the edge of the dock.

Common Eider Moms, along with non-breeding “aunties,” band together for protection. The individual broods come together to form a crèche, which may include as many as 150 ducklings!

#ChooseGloucester Video Series: Meet Gloucester High Student Austin Monell

Austin Monell loves science. At Gloucester High School, he’s built a hovercraft and electric skateboard as part of a bunch of hands-on engineering classes the school has for students. Gloucester High was named the top program in the state by the Massachusetts Technology Education and Engineering Collaborative.

“Between the teachers and the serious students, they share this passion and they mutually motivate each other,” says Austin’s mom, Alison. “His teachers get as excited as he does about some of the projects he’s working on.”

Watch Austin’s story:

This is the second in a series of video profiles about why students and their families choose the Gloucester public schools. Read the introductory post about the #ChooseGloucester series here and the first profile of student Lizzie Luster here.

Last Night’s Wicked Tuna Season Finale/100th Episode Party

When the season finale and the 100th episode of Wicked Tuna happen to fall on the same day, National Geographic throws a party!  Possibly they planned it that way.  Who could blame them.

We were super excited to be invited down to Bass Pro Shops at Patriot Place last night to attend National Geographic’s viewing party of the 100th episode and to be in attendance to see who was named winner of this past season.  Congratulations, by the way, to Tyler McLaughlin and his crew on the Pinwheel.

Pet of the Week-Sage

Super sweet, affectionate, and mellow your thing? I am the last of a litter of 7 loving, sweet puppies. I am a big lug of a puppy who thinks she should be a lap dog! I am a very good girl and the staff here says I am smart. I will tell you during the day I would like to go outside by whining just a little bit. I learned to sit very quickly and I am willing to try new things with a little gentle coaxing. My siblings and I are all very super gentle nature and sweet as can be. We get along well with other dogs and love to play. When out on a walk I watch my human for cues. I am getting used to riding in the car.
I am considered a special needs adoption because I have Osteochondritis dissecans – this is a disease that affects the cartilage of my joints. At this time I am pain free, but I need to have my exercise limited as I continue to grow. My new family will need to make sure they follow up with their own vet so I stay in tip top shape!
The folks here think we may have Hound, retriever or Bully breed in our family tree. I will likely be large to extra large size as an adult. Ready for a large puppy love in your life? Stop on in!
