Earth Day, Wednesday April 22, 2015

A message from Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken:

On Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22nd, from approximately 1 to 4 pm, the Gorton’s “Green Team” will be doing a cleanup of Stacey Boulevard.  Joe Lucido, Operations Manager at the Department of Public Works, is supposed to meet them there and provide yellow bags.  They plan to rake and do a general clean up that afternoon.  My point of contact at Gorton’s is Sheila Hardwick, who is the Executive Assistant to Judd Reiss, the CEO.  She can be reached by email at Sheila.hardwick@gortons.com  At my last communication with Sheila, they had 17 volunteers signed up for the afternoon.

In addition, the Mayor plans to stop by at some point over the afternoon to speak with the volunteers.May 21, 2014 flags waving on the blvd.

        Did you know that the Manchester Public Library is also doing a Peep 
        Show? The diorama contest is going on right now!
        We did this a couple of years ago and it was so popular that we 
        decided to repeat the fun. All ages are invited to create and enter

        A California native, Waits is known for his distinctive gravelly voice and his superb songwriting talents. Although usually categorized as a blues musician, his music extends far beyond that genre into jazz and experimental styles. Many of his ballads have been covered by more famous artists; including Springsteen’s “Jersey Girl” and the Eagles’ “Ol’ 55.” Waits also has a 35 year working relationship with Francis Ford Coppola and has scored nearly twenty films. His unusual looks and massive cool have gotten him parts in dozens of movies, from “One from the Heart” to “The Book of Eli.” Famously anti-consumerist, Waits has successfully sued both Audi and Frito-Lay for using sound-alike musicians to flog their products. He is married to Kathleen Brennan and has three children.

        An illustrated lecture on the history of the R.B. Strong Excavating & Sewerage Contractor, Inc.

        GLOUCESTER, Mass. (April 17, 2015) – The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Who We Are Is Who We Were – Historic Businesses of Cape Ann: R. B. Strong on Saturday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m.

        Join professors Janeil Rey and Shelby Clark for an illustrated talk on the history of the R.B. Strong Company, dating back to its founding by their great grandfather Walter Cressy in the mid-1800s. From paving the original runways at Boston’s Logan Airport to their role in the creation of the Cape Ann Museum’s sculpture park, the excavation company has been “Strong on Quality” since the late 1800s. This program is free for members or with Museum admission.

        Who We Are Is Who We Were – Historic Businesses of Cape Ann is an ongoing series of presentations focusing on Cape Ann businesses that have been in existence for over one hundred years. Burnham Boat Building & Design, and the sail making, furniture restoration and fine art painting businesses located at 16 Rogers Street in Gloucester.

        Today is Homie and Rubber Duck’s fourth Anniversary

        Four years? Seems like just yesterday.

        Homie: “You’re not from around here are you? May I show you the cove?” Solitude of the lonely Homie. Cold, lonely, rubbery, but Patriotic! A little stand offish at first. They’re eyes locked and Homie was in love. “So how many children should we have?” Homie wasn’t wasting any time. “I have a lovely nest on Milk Island.” You’re not listening to a word I’m saying!” “We could make it work!”

        I cannot believe it has only been four years since the Rubber Duck met Homie on a blustery day just like today, April 18, 2011. When I posted that first part of the Rubber Duck saga I was only joking about it being a twenty part series. Little did I know that six hundred posts later the story is still not finished. To commemorate their anniversary I repost the first few chapters. Part I posted April 18th, 2011: (This will be a twenty part series.) Part II posted April 19th, 2011: But first, the back story. Two lonely birds: But soon the connection was made and time stopped. ” “I am so out of here!” But Homie came back of course and took Rubber Duck all over.
