So I’ve got an idea for a challenge.
Top four nominations for best Gloucester Italian Sub as submitted in the comments on this post.
To submit a nomination you click the title of this post and then under the post where it says “Leave a comment”, click that and write the name of the sub joint who you consider makes the best Italian Sub in Gloucester.
Nomination period runs through Friday at 8PM.
Once we tally up the top four sub shops according to your nominations, 4 GMG contributors independently and at the same time order the exact same subs to go from the nominated sub shops. We pick them up and bring them back to the dock.
Then we place them on the digital scale for the Weigh In. We will divide the weight into the price and come up with the best value weight wise. Then we cut it in half and then in quarters to look at the cross section for the equal distribution of meat. If a place loads up the sub in the middle and leaves the ends empty they will be exposed.
Then we each take a quarter of the sub and grade based on taste.
We will present the findings in a post to the readership.
I’m pumped for this challenge!
So start sending in your nominations now in the comment section of this post (again if you don’t see words that say leave a comment directly below this post then click on the title of the post and you should see where you can submit a nomination)
Also please share the link through Facebook or twitter using the buttons below the post to get the most nominations as possible.

I don’t want to spoil the party, but here’s a shot of what I think of as an Italian sub.
I grew up in NY, where they cut the bread in half and and make the sub like a sandwich. They use shredded lettuce and flat pickles (if they add any pickles at all). The whole thing is easier to eat. Somehow this just makes more sense to me. — Peter

Peter, if you ate it in NY, it must have been a “Hero”…same as a Sub but IT’S in NY!
My vote is Destino’s with their “Hot Peppers”

The sub’s are going to be ordered with uniform specs. You’ll be put down for Destinos.

So if I get a “hero” in Brooklyn and start driving to Gloucester (takes about 5 hrs), does it magically become a “sub” on 84 when I cross into MA (assuming I haven’t eaten the whole thing by then)?
LikeLike
That is correct according to the National Grinder-Hoagie Rule Book Section 1.4
– Sub originated in Scollay Sq, Boston Mass at the beginning of World War I.

Well, where I came from in New Yawk, Da Bronx, the sandwich was never a hero, or a sub, rather a “wedge”.

Sclafani’s will win because…
They have the high quality imported deli meats and cheeses. They don’t skimp and use the cheap plastic textured cold cuts.
They have the best bang for your buck. And in my experience, if they happen to run out of rolls they will slice a whole loaf of bread in half and make you a jaw dropping size samwich that you can’t even finish.
As far as the bread goes, it’s a matter of preference. But, since this is an Italian sub contest, Sclafani’s and Virgilio’s, or anybody that uses their rolls, would have to be favorites. Those generic rolls are good, but not as good as a fresh baked Italian roll. mmm…God we’re spoiled in Gloucester.
“Me chi samiou dute mute? Viva San Pietro!”
Translation – “Shout it louder, are we all mute? Long live St. Peter!”
Side note – If it wasn’t for our fishing history, would we even have these Italian bakeries?

We must order each sub exactly the same way.
We will be ordering Large Italian subs with everything on it.
Each person placing the order the same exact way.
A Saint Joseph’s sandwich on their round rolls are not subs, they are sandwiches. They do make and sell large sub rolls at Virgilios. If Virgilios is one of the four finalists when we place the orders at the same time the order will will be placed for “A large Italian Sub with everything on it” so it is an even comparison with the other three finalists after the nomination process.

Does large Italian sub with everything mean lettuces, tomato, onion, pickles, red hot crushed peppers oil and seasoning? If Virgilios puts on roasted red peppers, sun dried tomatoes and olive salad they clearly will win the best tasting and value weight wise categories.

Large Italian with everything as in “I’m ordering this for someone else, however you do a large a Italian sub with everything on it” Large Italian sub with everything.
In other words if that’s the way they normally make a large Italian sub with everything on it then that’s it. If we go in a week later and get a sub that’s way skimpier because they got wind of the challenge and made it not representative of their true size sub then we will TOTALLY CALL THEM OUT ON IT!

I’m with Vicki and Peter. Look at the picture they posted, compared to that sloppy mess up top. Hands down, any “sub” in Glou pales in comparison to a sub from NJ/NY. If I have to pick from Glou, Virgilio’s is it.

Poseidons. Never had their Italian but if their steak bomb is any indicator …
ps. I can loan a digital scale that will weigh a large Italian sub to the 1/100th of a gram.

To make sure that the nominated bakeries/sub shops wouldn’t stack the sub I decided to go early. The four top nominated joints were way out in front with votes and were going to be the four subs anyway.
