On teaching adult learners: “What I love doing is helping students pick up where they left off at the piano, sometimes decades earlier. One of the greatest pleasures I get from teaching piano is sharing the joy of my students returning to the piano, after many years away. Or helping [adult] students discover the joys of learning to play the piano – often a dream they’ve had sometimes for years – for the very first time.”

On teaching kids: “I love it when some of my youngest students come in for their weekly lesson and are so excited to show me what they’ve learned at the piano, that sometimes they even forget to say ‘Hello, Miss Julie’ as they charge over to the piano to play me their songs! :-)”

  1. I took advantage of a discount Julie offered on Election Day and couldn’t be happier! I’m enjoying both my lessons and practicing the piano–now that I’m an adult and no one (MOM!) can tell me what to do. Playing the piano is such a wonderful rest from the work I do. I think it actually engages a different part of my brain. After a good practice session I feel renewed and energized. Try it! You may find this is a wonderful gift to yourself or to someone you love.

  2. My son took piano lessons with Julie Cleveland from early elementary school through middle school. He really enjoyed his lessons and was good about practicing because the material was interesting and challenging. Julie is excellent at finding what type of music will interest an individual student while also making sure that they are exposed to a variety of music styles. My son found that jazz pieces were his favorites, but he also learned to play classical music. Each lesson covered performance, theory and composition and was aimed at progressing skills to the next level. If your child is interested in composing their own music, Julie is excellent at encouraging and giving them confidence in that area as well. Julie also had yearly recitals and piano parties which exposed the students to performing in front of an audience and in social situations. I really liked Julie’s sense of humor, patience and the love of music she conveyed to her students. I highly recommend Julie to any student who is serious about learning piano or any returning student.
