Passports Restaurant followed by Love and Other Anxieties at Cape Ann Community Cinema for a lovely night out!

Last night I met my friend Lyda and her associate produce Erin at Passports Resturant for a glass of wine and an appetizer before Lyda’s screening of Love and Other Anxieties. They both loved Eric’s popovers (who doesn’t?) and we were all stunned by the enormity of the crabcakes, which were simply perfect. Golden brown and a tiny bit crunchy on the outside, and within, very nearly all crabmeat, with just a very small amount of breading to hold the crabmeat together; served on a bed of fresh greens and roasted red bell peppers.

We then walked the two short blocks to the Cape Ann Community Cinema. Movie tickets included dinner. That struck me as a little odd and I didn’t quite understand how they could pull that off. Dinner is prepared by none other than neighboring Virgilios–a piping hot concoction of pasta, chicken, and broccoli in a creamy cheese sauce along with a lovely garden salad and ginormous chocolate cupcake. And Cape Ann Community Cinema recently acquired their liquor liscense. You can enjoy a glass of wine while dinning, sitting on a large comfy sofa, all while viewing the movie.

Lyda’s screening went beautifully and her movie played to a crowd of enthusiastic and engaged attendees. The audience stayed for about 45 minutes following the film for an informal talk with Lyda.  I think we all found the discussion highly informative and inspiring. Special thanks to Rob for hosting Love and Other Anxieties.

Check out Cape Ann Community Cinema’s summer long schedule–what a fabulous events venue Rob has going here. By the way–any leftover dinner goes straight to our local shelter.

Pet of the Week-Pipette

I must be famous, I am on GoodMorningGloucester – they have won so many awards!

Pipette, pet of the week,

My name is Pipette and I am a two-month-old girl kitten who is white-brown-and-orange. I am staying at the Cape Ann Animal Aid at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter until I am adopted.

Have you visited the new shelter yet?  It is located now at Four Paws Lane in Gloucester and it is beautiful and the staff and volunteers are wonderful to all the animals!  Please stop by and visit us. You may also visit: CapeAnnAnimalAid.com and see photos of all the adoptable cats and dogs.

We are so grateful to many businesses and friends who have been so generous and now the new shelter is open!  The staff appreciates the added room, equipment and state-of-the art facility and I do too!

I must run now and find the volunteer to do my nails.  Now that I am on Good Morning Gloucester, I know Hollywood will be calling me soon!

Yesterday’s sunrise with a rainbow in the west

These photos were taken at around 5:35-5:45AM yesterday, from the room of the rectory at St. Ann’s Church (Holy Family Parish).  I should have shot a panorama that included both the sunrise and the rainbow, but it was too early for my brain to think that clearly…

Say What? The Sarah Elizabeth Shop is on One Kings Lane!

Designer Julia Garrison, the new printer/operator of The Sarah Elizabeth Shop (in Rockport since 1974), was asked by the hugely popular designer home goods online retailer One Kings Lane to sell some of the shop’s hand-printed runners. The sale only runs through today, July 24th and features a limited run of four different block-printed designs, which will probably sell out if it hasn’t done so by now.

It’s exciting to see this sort of recognition of the work being created at The Sarah Elizabeth Shop. The best part is that the business is managing to grow while keeping the integrity of a small workshop, a place where functional pieces are designed by artists and created by hand. Andrea Gail Builder Looking For Help

Lisa Freed asks-

Hey Joey!

Sort of odd question for you.  My 80 year old dad builds ship models. He’s in NY, but we all grew up on Long Island Sound, so sailing is in our blood.  You know I love the blog- it’s part of my daily routine.

Anyway, my dad is building the Andrea Gail.  According to him, the sister ships are the Lady Grace and Hannah Boden. He’s asking me if I can find them, or similar, and get him as many photos of deck layouts, interior, exterior, etc.

Any clues? HELP! Or do you have photos from the docks? I’ve attached some of his recent models. All are from wood, and he gets the ships plans to start the hull, piecing it together as a shipyard would. He does it all from scratch, turning ridiculous stuff into ship parts. He’ll take a thimble and suddenly it’s a captain’s chair, he shops for suede til he finds the right one for seat covers. The model he did for me has sails- he had a sailmaker cut them. It’s amazing, and quite honestly, I have no clue how he has that steady hand and eye sight at 80. I can only hope.

Anything you can offer for help, I’ll take it!

New York Times Features Gloucester’s Hopper Houses

John McElhenny Forwards this Article In The NY Times-

The Original Hoppers

To New Yorkers, Edward Hopper is likely to evoke visions of moody nighttime urban scenes. But the painter created some of his most famous work in the bright seaside town of Gloucester, Mass., on Cape Ann, where he spent time in the 1920s. The photographer Gail Albert Halaban has been locating the original houses in Hopper’s paintings there and taking pictures of them as they look today. Greta Bagshaw, whose husband’s family has owned the ‘‘Mansard Roof ’’ since 1962, is accustomed to the attention. ‘‘Not infrequently we’ve seen people who set up easels in our backyard to paint it,’’ Bagshaw says. ‘‘We know it’s time to put up the awnings each year when we’re eating on the porch and we turn around and see a big tour group watching us eat dinner.’’

Sugar Mags vs Classic Cooks HUGE REMATCH for the First Seafood Throwdown this Thursday ~ 4pm at the Farmers Market ~ Stage Fort Park

Last year Julie Geary claimed the title from four-time winner, previously undefeated Missy Hart of Sugar Magnolias in an extraordinarily close contest, full of mouthwatering anticipation and suspense.  See the video that Joey made of that throwdown here:

Below is a quick press release from Throwdown master organizer, Sandy Farrell.

Our “Hotter Than July!” rematch pits Missy Hart’s Team Sugar Magnolia with Lydia Sands and Santos Carvalho against Julie Geary’s Team from Classic Cooks. Watch closely as both of these teams bring years of experience to the table. Grant writer, organic farmer at Beacon Street Farm, and head of the Backyard Growers Program, Lara Lepionka will be judging the event with her critical eye. Steve Parkes, the “Fillet King” will lead a demonstration showing how to fillet a whole fish and break down the process so that you can feel confident in the kitchen. Join emcee Peter Van Ness of gimmesound.com this Thursday, July 26 at the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market. This is our second year at Stage Fort Park where the parking is always free on Market afternoons from 3pm on. The SeaFood Throwdown starts at 4pm.
