Possibly a Black-crowned Night Heron … they’re beautiful, aren’t they?

That’s a black crowned night heron – beautiful birds who are largely nocturnal when they do most of their fishing, but you can occasionally see them during the day. They have a distinct “quork” that they let lose when they take off. They appear kind of hunch-backed and so in silouette are easy to identify. You can see them usually over on Niles Pond.

Hi Paul–You have a gorgeous Black-crowned Night Heron. I had never seen one until last fall when I was at Niles Pond filming at dawn.
Link to a video I posted last fall–night heron is towards the end of the video: https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2011/10/12/sundown-moonrise-and-sunup-eastern-point-gloucester-video-from-kim-smith/
Link to photos of a mom and juvenile that Joey posted last spring: https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2011/06/17/black-crowned-night-heron-at-the-dock-2/
There are are several more posts on GMG–just search Black-crowned Night Heron–I don’t know how to put links in comments.

It looks like a crowned night heron. We see them fishing in the Harbor almost every night.

there are yellow-crowned night herons as well, but this is definitely a black-crowned. They breed
on islands offshore and occasionally inland. I think there may be a large rookery on the island off the end of Coolidge Point.

It’s a Black Capped Night Heron. I used to see them along the Charles river in Watertown. It’s always amazing when they stretch and – wow – they actually have necks.
