Are you shooting in B&W, or reducing color to monochrome afterwards on the computer? If the latter, are you just desaturating, or separating the color channels and picking the most interesting?
Just curious, since I’m playing around with monochrome a bit now, and your results are always dramatic and striking.

I shoot in color, maximize that image and then convert to B&W using the Nik Silver Efex Pro 2
plug in to Photoshop Elements 6. I don’t know precisely how the software works, but it does not destroy the original color, thereby allowing for selective colorization of the image. It has a large batch of presets for various effects and a detailed menu of global, local and finishing tools. I often start with just the “neutral” rendition and create the final image step by step without use of the presets. Sometimes I’ll use a preset for a starting point. The program is great fun to use,is intuitive and offers endless opportunities for creativity. You can download a free 15 day sample. The cost is $200, but Nik often offers
promotions at 1/2 price.
