Help Send The Docksiders On Vacation

Hi Joey,
The GHS Docksiders are raising money for their trip to perform at Disney World in April 2012. They’ve been invited to perform at 3 separate venues this year which is quite an honor.
We are holding the following event to help raise money to cover trip costs. Any exposure you can give us to help drum up participation in the January 17th Music Quiz Night event would be greatly appreciated.
This is going to be a fun night. David DiPietro, assistant leader of the Docksiders, is going to MC and the event is being held at Bass Rocks Golf Club which is a beautiful venue.
Please give me a call or email me if you have any questions.
Thanks so much for anything you can do to help us out.

Gloucester’s New Twin Lights

The potential to save $450,000 in energy costs by installing two industrial turbines near Varian is definitely an exciting prospect. But just to put this into some perspective (pun intended), we all need to be prepared for the visual impact of these turbines. They are massive, measuring 404-feet in height, taller than the Statue of Liberty. Here’s a depiction of a 418-foot turbine next to the Statue of Liberty:

Wow. For a little extra amusement, check out you tube videos of industrial turbines being brought in on trucks – this sight alone should make for some local excitement as these massive pieces of equipment are installed. The video featured below is of a 1.5 megawatt turbine, significantly smaller than the 2.0 megawatt turbines being installed in Gloucester.

Great Use of a Plentiful Natural Resource

If there’s one thing we have plenty of on Cape Ann, its rocks, and these people used them beautifully in every possible way.

Treasures found locally ~ a pair of hand-painted Czechoslovakian lamps

A recent find for one of my design clients is this pair of sweetly hand-painted Czechoslovakian lamps, with coordinating shades trimmed in blue silk cord, discovered at a local vintage shop.

Forget-me-nots and Roses

I love the challenge of searching for and finding one of a kind (or in this case, a pair of) treasures for my design clients. And I partuclarly love one of my ongoing design jobs for a simply delightful family, with three lovely and lively daughters, each with their own very distinct personality and style preference. The eldest daughter is zippy and lighthearted with a definite flair for the modern; the second daughter is gently refined and ethereal (I think of watercolor hues for her); and the third daughter is possessed of a warm and sunny character—a radiant sunflower. The pair of Czechoslovakian lamps will add a charming touch to the middle daughter’s bedroom. Whether you are searching for special plants for the garden (the most highly scented specimens, for example) or rare and/or out-of-the-ordinary objects of art and decoration for the home, thoughtfully selected accents create the most welcoming sort of home.

Important Safety Note: Although these lamp bases are in near-perfect vintage condition, the cords are not. Judging from the overall poor condition of the cords, I would guess they were last wired in the late 1950’s or 1960’s. We will re-wire the lamps with soft gold-colored cord, which will better blend with the décor, as opposed to the dark brown or stark white wire. Always, and always very thoroughly, check the wiring when purchasing vintage lighting—for obvious reasons, I cannot stress this enough.

Condensation

Seen on New Years’ Day in the morning, on a window in the old St. Ann’s High School building on Prospect St.  This is sort of follow-up to my other recent post with a photo of this building; this is a detail of the same window, but on a different day. I like the jeweled effect of the beads of condensation on the glass, absent in the other photo.

Cape Ann Brewing Silo Install From Bill O’Connor

Hi Joey,

I caught this image with my phone on Friday while they were pressure washing the new grain silo at the Cape Ann Brewing Company. Apparently they’ll be able to store half of an 18 wheeler’s tanker load of grain in there and will feed into the building from the outside with an automated auger system. Who would have thought that a grain silo –something normally associated with farming –would end up in Saint Peter’s Square?

Enjoy! ~Bill O’Connor North Shore Kid

The New Camera Gets Camera of the Year from “The Verge”

I’ve been loving the new camera.  As you all know I constantly bang the drum of keeping your equipment on the smaller side so you are more likely to bring it with you.

The Sony NEX-5N to me has been the best compromise of price/size/image quality/build quality/features

Here’s what “The Verge” had to say about it-

image
SONY NEX-5N

The door that Sony cracked open with the NEX-5 has been blown wide open by the NEX-5N. Besides making the body marginally thinner and adding a touchscreen, Sony endowed the NEX-5N with a truly supreme image sensor. Its 16-megapixel CMOS sensor competes with the Nikon D7000 and Canon 60D (each company’s latest and greatest midrange DSLR) for noise performance, while delivering image quality that leaves other mirrorless cameras in the dust. If the NEX-5N had a universal microphone input and a more generous battery, it’d be a formidable DSLR replacement for professionals as well. As it stands, it’s the top choice for any hobbyist looking for the best image-quality-to-camera-size ratio.

I’ve been absolutely loving mine.  Soooo much fun to shoot with.  I highly highly highly recommend this camera for anyone from the person that wants the image quality of a large chunky DSLR in a much smaller form factor.

I’ll say it again though my mantra is if you only own one camera it should be one that you feel comfortable carrying around with you.  This won’t fit in your pants pockets like the Canon Powershot s95/s100 or Sony HX9V but it will blow away their picture quality with it’s larger sensor.

Love it!
