ARDELLE Week 16
White-throated Sparrow and Winter Moth Post From Kim Smith
White-throated Sparrow and Winter Moth
White-throated Sparrow Dining on Winter Moth Larvae
Last May my husband and I were delighted to discover a large flock of White-throated Sparrows (Zonotrichia albicolli) rumpusing about our garden. A chorus of choristers chortling My Sweet Canada, Canada, Canada or alternatively Old Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody, their clear, elegant notes were heard for several days and they were easily spotted rustling about the hedge, dining on safflower seeds from the ground below the bird feeder, and feasting on winter moth caterpillars in the trees. I believe it to be a fairly rare occurrence to observe a flock migrating this far east through Cape Ann. My East Gloucester neighbor Jen, who has a lovely garden even closer to the easternmost edges of the peninsula, reported same. Her flock also stayed for several days enjoying the winter moth caterpillar banquet found in her yard. Rather than walk or run, White-throated Sparrows hop, and we delighted in our all too brief encounter with this beautiful and entertaining “Whistler of the North.”

Old-Style Fun at the Liu
A shout-out to D.J. of Bearskin Neck Leathers for coming up with a nickname for the classiest joint in Rockport: the beautiful Shalin Liu Performance Center. D.J. likes to call it The Liu, pronounced loo, and since D.J. can be kinda scary (in a good way), we do what he says. Tomorrow at The Liu, there’s a free screening of a movie (filmed in Rockport in 1988) hosted by the great Philip Hopkins of Film Chest, as well as some vintage home movies of Rockport from the collection of lifelong resident Pierce Sears, proprietor of everybody’s favorite hometown business, the Twin Lights Soda Company. And as if all of that isn’t compelling enough, there will also be a holiday sing-along. Of course all of this fun is preceded by Rockport’s pageant, beginning at 5 p.m. sharp.
So get to town early, shop, get some coffee at the Bean & Leaf, watch the pageant, watch the movie, watch the home movies, then sing your heart out at The Liu. Sounds like the perfect pre-Christmas Rockport Saturday to me.

More Buoys To Paint During The Winter Carnival Block Party! Saturday Dec 18th
Art Haven Director Dawn Gadow Writes-
Thanks so much to everyone who came out to paint buoys at Art Haven last weekend! We had a record number of buoys painted and wanted to make sure to say a huge thanks to Ben’s Paint, Rose’s Marine, Winchester Fishing, Ace Hardware, Building Center, and everyone who came out to help build the lobster trap tree this year! If you haven’t gotten to see it all lit up yet, you better check it out!
Also, since we ran out of buoys last weekend, we’ve got another buoy painting opportunity this Saturday during the Winter Carnival Block Party! We picked up a few more buoys and those who didn’t get a chance last weekend are welcome to come Saturday between 5 and 7 to paint their own unique ornament for this year’s tree. We do still have a limited number, though, so let us know if you’re definitely coming down to paint one and we’ll be sure to have one for you. You can email us at arthaveninfo@gmail.com or call 978.283.3888.
Thanks again to everyone who was a part of this year’s tree (and is going to be this weekend)! Gloucester’s lobster trap tree is clearly the best around – when else is this much of the community involved in one masterpiece?!?
Happy Holidays from Art Haven!

Local Resident Bo Cleary, Fitness Coach to Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale of "The Fighter"
Local Resident Bo Cleary, Fitness Coach to Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale of "The Fighter," Premiers Fitness Video Series On Taste of the Times
In this first video demonstration, “Mitt Fitness,” Bo shows his training approach on how to use boxing to get in shape. Bo coached Mark and Christian before and during the filming of their latest movie, The Fighter, opening nationwide today. It has already received 6 Golden Globe nominations. In the movie, released today, December 17, 2010, Bo plays a policeman who breaks the hand of the main character played by Mark Wahlberg. The movie is based on the true story about the unlikely boxing champion from Lowell, Micky Ward.
Bo, currently living in Cape Ann, says that he has seen the movie and liked it a lot, and not just because he is in it. “It has a lot of drama, great acting by Mark as well as Christian Bale, who plays Micky Ward’s brother, Dicky Eklund. Besides that, it is a true story that happened right in our area.”
In this first video, Bo suggests starting in front of your mirror, moving your hands back and forth like a boxer does to train for a fight.

Did you know That there is a Terminal Moraine at Dogtown Square?
Ejay Khan Writes-
Did you know
That there is a Terminal Moraine at Dogtown Square? A terminal moraine, also called end moraine, is a moraine that forms at the end of the glacier, called the snout. Terminal moraines mark the maximum advance of the glacier. A moraine is any glacially formed accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris (soil and rock). Moraines may be composed of debris ranging in size from silt-sized glacial flour to large boulders. The debris is typically sub-angular to rounded in shape. In other words, this is a pile of glacier poop.
