You want to get some Holiday shopping done from the comfort of your couch and support the Blog at the same time?

Thanks to the folks who have ordered photos.  Here is the info if anyone would like to order one (I’ll repost this once a week through the season in case folks want to contribute to the blog and my new camera fund) 🙂

Many people have asked to buy my pictures and I’ve long refused but I’ve decided with the holidays coming up I’d give people an opportunity to get some holiday shopping done early and at the same time give the people who ask if there is any way they could support the blog a way to cut down on some of my hosting expenses and the like.

Most people charge upwards of $25 for an 8×10 photo but I decided that I’d start the pricing at $15 and give folks a break incrementally the more they buy. So if you would like to support the effort I put into the blog and want to bang out some holiday shopping early check out the pictures and email me at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com with the picture number(s) you would like and your address and I will mail them to you. Each photo will come in a protective sleeve ready for gifting. All photos will come sans the Good Morning Gloucester Watermark.

Out of the Ashes Rises A Symbol of Hope

Congratulations to our Cape Ann Jewish Community, especially to their synagogue design and architectural oversight committee, for the beautiful futuristic building taking shape on historic Middle Street. This modern temple sends a message of hope and inspiration. Our Jewish community is alive and well, moving forward with an edifice that inspires hope for the future while honoring their founding fathers from the past.
Gloucester has been my home for a lifetime and some of my most memorable experiences involved my Portuguese neighbors and lifelong Italian friends. Reflecting on my formative years, our Jewish community the smallest of Cape Ann’s ethnic groups influenced my life more than any other; I am truly grateful.

E.J. Lefavour History Behind The Painting At The Sawyer Free Art Auction

Great – this will be fun.  Attached is a little info about me, and a painting I did of a turnabout (this painting was donated to the Sawyer Free Library for their annual art auction), info below about it and its history.  EJ-

Did you know

That the National 10 class was originally known as the Turnabout class, built in 1953 by Harold R.Turner as a small wooden single or double handed dinghy class at the Parker River Marine. The boats were initially built as a junior training boat, although adults enjoy the boats as well. The class has grown mainly in the New England and Northeastern regions of the U.S. Fleets are located in Northern Lake George, New York, Boston, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine and New Jersey. This turnabout, located in Annisquam on Lobster Cove, is said to be the first turnabout ever built.

I went by the Art Auction display at the library this morning and leafed through the bid book.  there were many gorgeous paintings without any bids.

My suggestion is for you to go to that auction tomorrow night (Wednesday) for the live auction and you might just walk away with a great piece for very little dough.

Driftwood for Christmas?

Driftwood Tree and Painting at the Tusinski Gallery

Yes!  I would love a sculpture made from driftwood for Christmas, thank you!  In our house, we place a high premium on driftwood.  A huge piece hangs over our fireplace like a great big mounted fish (yes, we realize this is strange), so you can imagine my delight at finding trees made from driftwood in a few shop windows in Rockport this season.  These driftwood trees look great as sculptural pieces of course, but you could also be adventurous and treat your driftwood tree like a conventional Christmas tree.  Add homemade ornaments and admire.  And just think – no pine needles to sweep up!  Look for artisan-made driftwood trees at Rockport’s Tusinski Gallery on Main Street and Lula’s Pantry in Dock Square.

Ian McColl’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”

The spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future return to Blackburn Performing Arts  in the  annual production of Ian McColl’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” featuring a cast of 40 residents from Cape Ann.
The family-friendly show features caroling and dancing as the story of Ebenezer Scrooge unfolds. The audience will watch as Scrooge transforms from his miserly ways to a man eager to share in the tradition of giving. The spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future lead him on a mystical journey through which he discovers the true meaning of Christmas.
This year’s production features writer/director  Ian McColl as Scrooge,  Daniel Diamond in two roles, as Bob Cratchit as well as the spirit of Jacob Marley and Evie Gariepy as Mrs. Cratchit. The cast includes children, teens and adults in an array of roles including angels, urchins, spirits, townspeople, and of course the Cratchit family, including Tiny Tim who is being played by O’Maley student Jack Favazza.
Actors as young as 4 and as old as 60 are working together to tell this story to their Gloucester audience. The ghost scenes are not too scary, and the show is appropriate even for the youngest audience members – and, of course, it comes with a big happy ending.
McColl is thrilled when he sees former alumni return to see the production as part of the audience, and has  been looking  forward to the day when the next generation of children would carry on the tradition of their parents by taking part in the annual show. This year Bailee Militello, who is playing an angel, is the daughter of Brianna Saunders Militello, who played an angel and a Cratchit child in this production 15 years ago, fulfills McColl’s dream. 
The cast will perform the show a seven times over the next two weeks when the words of Dickens once again will ring out under the stage spotlight.

Thirty years ago to the day…

On Monday, December 8, 1980, John Lennon was fatally shot four times in front of the Dakota Building, NYC, by Mark David Chapman after a mixing session with Yoko Ono at Record Plant Studio.  As with the Kennedy assassination, most of us remember exactly where we were when we heard the tragic news.  Upon the suggestion of bartender Michael Gallagher, Dan and I have put a modest collection of his songs together for the purpose of a special Rhumb Line tribute.  Hope you can all be there.

Cape Ann Brewing New Joint- First Look Pictures

In the tradition of Good Morning Gloucester always bringing you into the local joints first we yet again bring you the first photos taken by media inside Cape Ann Brewing and an interview with owner Jeremy Goldberg who gives the rundown of what the differences between the old place and the new.

It’s what we do- bring you inside first.

The bar is looooooong.  Lots of wood, a beautiful deck overlooking the working waterfront, serious kitchen and wide open.  This space is sure to bring in locals as well as craft beer enthusiasts in just another fantastic reason to make Gloucester a destination.

The kitchen will be serving comfort food and some very interesting seafood dishes (I’ll leave the details for our video interview with Jeremy Goldberg)

Be A Part of The Gloucester Lobster Trap Tree- Buoy Painting At Art Haven Dec 10th and 11th

What sets our lobster trap tree apart from the inferior sterile ones from Maine?  Well it’s the kids of course!  Our children get to paint buoys at Art Haven with their names or designs or Scenes on them to adorn the tree.

Our tree isn’t just tossed together by a bunch of lobstermen who should be out hauling traps.  Our tree is a true community project in which everyone young and old can adorn and take pride in.   Snoop Maddie Mad and The Bean had a ball last year painting their buoys at Art Haven as part of the Middle street Walk day activities.  You can too!

I’ll go as far as to say that you are a negligent parent if you don’t bring your child down to Art Haven on either the 10th or 11th so they can paint a buoy and be part of a Great Gloucester Tradition!!!  Winking smile
