9 am – 3 pm Unitarian Universalist Church,10 Church Street Fair & Luncheon, Pictures with Santa ( 9am1pm), tours highlighting Glosta Dalton (17231813) a black religious freedom pioneer (11am1pm).
10am-3pm City Hall, 9 Dale AvenueSchooner Adventure“Schooner Brunch” $10.00 per person. “Ships Store” will offer items for sale to support Schooner Adventure and an ongoing children’s activity making “Sailor’s Valentine Ornaments”. Committee for the Arts will sell postcards of City Hall’s WPA Murals and have a table with information on City Hall Restoration efforts. The Gingerbread House Contest Displaywinner will be announced in Kyrouz Auditorium. The Phyllis A. Marine Associationwill have an information table. 11 am & 2pm Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant Street, will host tours of the Elias Davis House with period “Winter Display” decorations for the Holidays by Gloucester Civic & Garden Council.

11 am Children’s Room Sawyer Free Library, 2 Dale Avenue, Robb Preskins Magic Show “Arctic Fantasy”. Refreshments will be served.

2pm City Hall, 9 Dale Avenue, St. Ann’s School Student Concert.
2 pm Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant Street, will host tour of c.1804 Captain Elias Davis House decorated for the holidays by Gloucester Civic & Garden Council. Museum with period “Winter Display”.
3 pm Unitarian Universalist Church, 10 Church Street, O’Maley Middle School Band and Gloucester High School Chorus perform.
4pm Trinity Congregational Church, 70 Middle Street, Old Fashioned Holiday SingaLong and refreshments.
5 pm Cape Ann Art HavenAnnual Lobster Trap Tree Lighting at Police Station Plaza with a visit from Santa
All Day till 8pm Rocky Neck Art Colony, 117 Main Street 6th Annual Winter Exhibit. Shop open from 10 am – 8pm.

The Bandit Kings tonight at The Rhumb Line  – 9:30to12:30.  I have my autographed Precious Stones CD Do you? I am sure you can get your copy tonight. I love it and the Bandit Kings. The Bandit Kings have a lot of original songs that really hit the heart. Some of them are lively and make you want to get up on the dance floor. Great live entertainment in so many ways. They are one of my top favorite bands. Check em out.

Food & Writing & Walking

Gloucester’s own Denise Frame Harlan has been included in a book of collected essays called “The Spirit of Food”.  Denise is many things: mother, teacher, fabric artist and of course, writer – which makes her fit in perfectly on Cape Ann, with its community of creative people skilled in crafting both things and words.

Denise will be at Common Crow tomorrow, December 11th, from 11:30 to 1:30 pm to sign copies of “The Spirit of Food” or just chat with you about the life of a mother/teacher/fabric artist/writer.  This is a perfect complement to the Middle Street Walk going on just around the corner from Common Crow, so stop in and say hello, no purchase necessary (according to the writer herself).  You can take in a holiday walk on Middle Street, pick up your organic groceries and chat up a Gloucester writer all in one fell swoop.  Where else but on Cape Ann could you squeeze in so much good food and culture in the course of an ordinary Saturday?

Ladies, gentlemen and kids of all ages–fire up those ovens and bring your holiday cookies to Gloucester City Hall on Saturday, December 11th at 1:00pm for the second annual Good Morning Gloucester Holiday Cookie Contest to benefit The Open Door Food Pantry.
Entry fee is $5.00 and two non-perishable food items for The Open Door.
And here are the rules:
You may enter more than one type of cookie but you must donate $5.00 and two non-perishable food items per entry.
Your entries will be judged on the following criteria by qualified food professionals and local notables, all with excellent taste buds:
Taste 40%
Appearance (of cookies and overall presentation) 20%
Texture 20%
Overall Appeal of cookies 20%
And now, the particulars:
You may decorate and garnish your entries with holiday flair as desired, 12 cookies per plate please–presentation is important!
No professional bakers/chefs or culinary arts students allowed to enter please.
No mixes allowed.  All entries must be from scratch.
Three legible copies of recipe must accompany all entries. Please include name, address and telephone number on the BACK of each sheet.  Recipes may be reproduced.  If your recipe is not original (your personal creation), please attribute its origin.
Judging will begin promptly at 1:30 and will conclude when all entries have been judged.  Announcement of the winners will follow the conclusion of judging.
You do not have to be present for announcement of the winners, but it will be more fun if you are.
The decisions of the judges are final.
All cookie entries will be packaged and donated to The Open Door the night of the event.
I am assembling prizes now so if you have something foodie/local/fun you would like to donate to the prize baskets, please let me know.    There will be adult first, second and third prizes and prizes for the kids too!

Free Family Skating Event This Weekend

BLT at Willow Rest

Some sandwiches I don’t think I have ever ordered, tuna fish sandwich, PB&J, or a BLT. Why? because I know I can make them better myself and they are so easy to make. I think I shied away from ordering a BLT because I figured they would just use the bacon left over from breakfast. Until Sue and Evvy split a BLT at Willow Rest. They let me have one bite. Wow.  It wasn’t until this week that I got back to order one for myself.

This bacon lettuce and tomato is better than I have ever made.

The bun: soft and chewy, buttered and toasted on the grill for a nice layer of crunch.

Bacon: thick, salty, smoked, I think you can get this in the Willow Rest refridgerator case.

Lettuce: fluffy pile for good texture to oppose the crunch of bacon and the grilled bun.

Tomato: still getting that homegrown taste in December.

The mayo: some kind of secret mixture with a nice tang to it.

The last five times I’ve stopped at the Willow Rest I can’t help ordering the Cuban. I might have found the lunch that will win the next five visits.

seARTS Wearable Arts Show and Sale Today and Tomorrow

Hope you can make it down to the Saunder’s House for the Wearable Arts Show tonight or tomorrow.  We will be setting up today mid-day and then we transform the place for tonight at 5 – with harp music, food, etc..  Then all day tomorrow 9-6.  Not sure if you’ve ever filmed the murals at the library…but they are awesome.

The Annisquam Stagecoach

Did you know that the stagecoach began service to and from Annisquam in 1849 and ceased operation in 1893 when trolleys took over. The stagecoach office was located on Washington St. James Cunningham ran the stagecoach line between Annisquam and Gloucester until the Civil War broke out in 1861 and he became the first lieutenant of the 32nd Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers. This stagecoach is located upstairs at the Annisquam Historical Society (old fire house) in Annisquam Village (can’t figure out how they got it there).
