The Rudder: First Weekend

This was the first weekend of the Rudder and I was Jonesing for the Monkfish but never got there. Not until tonight but I missed the monkfish, That is, the mussels, crab cake apps then a Paella entrée got in the way.

Can I mention the mussels? Why have I been visiting Cape Ann for years and no one has explained to me that the Rudder’s mussels are not the usual white whine and onions sort of thing? That they do this cream with sausage that blends in some intense fennel flavor that is just over the top.

The crab cakes I won’t mention because I think everyone knows that they are the tastiest most crabby crab cakes on the island.

My daughter had the bolognese which is always something we have to doggy bag so I can find it later tonight to eat although she has become much craftier at hiding it.

Kim Smith Writes In About Baltimore Orioles

Dear Gardening Friends,

With orchard fruit trees coming into bloom, we should be seeing the Baltimore (Northern) Orioles any day now. In mid-March we filled our hummingbird feeders and placed them in the garden, in anticipation of the earliest hummingbird scouts, and last year the orioles drank freely the sugar-water provided for the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Sugar-water recipe for orioles and hummingbirds: 1/4 cup granulated sugar to 1 Cup warm water. Stir to dissolve the sugar.  Wash feeders in hot soapy water, with white vinegar added, and replace sugar-water on a twice weekly schedule, to prevent mold.

Oh Joyous Spring!

Warmest wishes,

Kim

“…discloses strange new vistas that nonetheless seem to have existed since ancient times.” -A.O. Scott, New York Times

“Rapturous! Stunning! A riot of color!” -Ella Taylor, Village Voice

“A visual feast…Unlike anything I have ever seen before!” -Lou Lumenick, New York Post

Do not miss the highly anticipated new animated masterpiece from the producers of “Kirikou and the Sorceress” and “The Triplets of Belleville.” Magic, fantasy and Celtic mythology come together in a riot of color and detail that dazzle the eyes in this sweeping story about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times. Features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Mick Lally, Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney.

Young Brendan lives in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids. But a new life of adventure beckons when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying an ancient but unfinished book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan’s determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil?

Snoop Maddie Mad- Not The Worlds Greatest Hide and Go Seeker

You gotta love Snoop Maddie Mad.

When I get home from work sometimes she will run and hide and want me to find her.  Most times it’s right out in the open but she puts her little hands over her eyes and figures that if she can’t see me that I must not be able to see her, LOL.  Here she is hiding under one of the dining room chairs.  I’m thinking that becoming a spy is not at the top of the list of career choices for Snoop Mad.
