I need to vent. I’ve head a couple of very frustrating events take place over the past couple days, one of which has for the first time led to a let down in motivation on the blog.
Frustrated Part I:
I got an email last week from Troy Brown’s handlers saying that they love GMG and they would like for us to run a contest through the blog to help promote Troy’s Gloucester appearances this past weekend.
Immediately I went into blog mode asking if I could get some promotional swag to give to the readers and also asked if I could do an exclusive interview with Troy for the first ever official audio podcast of GMG. Everyone agreed on the terms and I started doing Troy Brown research so I wouldn’t sound like an idiot during the interview. I developed about 10 questions with follow up questions in the event he answered the questions one way or another. When I got the call that the interview was going to happen I called Mike Lindberg and he put together an incredible intro for the podcast which we’ll debut later. I waited for a call to know when Troy would be calling in, had all the audio equipment set and was ready to rock.
All day I was nervous as hell because if he called while we were unloading boats there was no way I could leave the floor of the dock to do the interview so it was much to my delight that we had finished up all our work and I got the call at just about the perfect time.
I had pretty high expectations for the interview as I was well prepared and was excited about the fun and different questions I had lined up as opposed to the normal questions he must have to answer all day every day like -” Do you miss football”
He called and the interview went fantastic. He was laughing, I was laughing and we had a great time. 12.5 minutes of podcast gold……or so I thought.
I hung up and got Mike Lindberg right away on Skype as Mike was going to produce the podcast and get it out before the eight o’clock deadline to be included in the email blast to the subscribers.
We had an exclusive on Thursday, days before Troy was going to be in Gloucester and it was the perfect guest for the first podcast.
So I looked in the folder where the audio file was supposed to be located containing the interview and it wasn’t there. I spent 15 more minutes searching every folder on my hard drive to no avail.
It didn’t record. There was no way I could have done the interview again and capture that spontaneity and fun. Not to mention the embarrassment of my mistake.
It took me apart and I’ve been in a funk since. I missed it and I’m sorry guys.

Ugh, that’s the worst! I’m so sorry that happened, but you couldn’t have known it didn’t record! Just have faith that another awesome opportunity like that will come across your path again, and you’ll do it wonderfully again! Love the blog, read it every day! It’s ok to be frustrated, let yourself get mad. Then move on, and keep up the good work!

Joey, nothing to be ashamed about. Technology glitches happen all of the time. Post a written summary of the call if you care to and I’m sure we’ll all be fine. Saw a great article about you in the Cape Ann Beacon. Keep up the good work and get that motivation back. A lot of readers depend on you.

Hey, it happens. When you look back on this weeks or months from now, this small glitch won’t really matter that much at all.
I suggest asking your wife to make one of the “World Famous, A #1 Lobster Rolls” to help pull you out of your funk.
That and a walk somewhere in Gloucester so you can look at what really does matter. Maybe Ravenswood will do you good.

Technology is great when it works…. unfortunately it doesn’t always work. Joe, that’s just how things go sometimes. You work so hard at this blog and put so much into it that I can certainly understand your disappointment but don’t beat yourself up.
You’re a great guy and you’ve contributed so, so much to Gloucester. We’re all proud of you!

Oh Joey, how maddening!
Like everyone else has said, things don’t always work out the way they’re supposed to. Let it go. You do awesome stuff and although you’re terribly disappointed, you’ll get another chance at something big.
We love you, ya know!

All you can do is laugh about it now. The effort was there and you got to “shoot the breeze” with All Pro and Superbowl Champ Troy Brown…and Troy “shot the breeze” with Lobster King and “Blog-A-Riffic” Joey! And besides you got me on a past interview…What more could you want?

Sounds like Troy had the bigger score this time. I’m sure he’ s going around trying to convince all his buddies that he got to talk to Joey the Lobster King and even has his private number! Naturally, all his buddies are saying “Sure, Troy. Who you trying to fool with that story.”

You’re not alone. I had something similar happen once trying to record on Skype. I’ve since tested multiple programs for recording Skype calls. They are all finicky in their own ways. I’ve found that I need to test and retest the recording and then – once I’m sure it is working – not change a single setting before making the call. As a failsafe, you can have each person simultaneously record their own end of the conversation using a program like Audacity, so if the call doesn’t record, you can splice together the two audio files.

Technology will bite you in the butt when it hurts the worst. I was helping a friend interview fishermen at the Boston fish auction at dawn 25 years ago. I was the sound man and she held the camera and did the interviews. Big recorder hanging around my neck holding out the microphone. She was on a roll and they were great interviews. Only problem was I never clicked that last record switch.
If it makes you feel any better it still bums me out just thinking about it. 😉

You now have a “funny” story to tell the girls when they get older about how daddy’s make make mistakes too. You should have taken him for a Mudiga Steak Sandwich down the fort and all would be forgotten. (living in Boston, can NOT get those sandwiches out of my head. heading to Gloucester today to get one!!!)

I just want to say Joe…that you are a very ‘good hearted’ guy! I appreciate how much you care about our city!!! I don’t want this to sound “mushy” –
but You make a difference in Gloucester!
Great interview missed or not….
if everyone cared about life here and about other people as much as you do………….?!
As far as the burger fiasco/ I think businesses that go the extra mile….will not only survive these hard economic times…but thrive.
Our business is up – an five year high
– I like to think it is because we show people how much we appreciate their support and business.
Blessings to you and your family.
