Juni Van Dyke | Alternative Colors for Dark Times: An exhibition of paintings that gives rise to positive emotions, Jane Deering Gallery, 19 Pleasant Street , Gloucester, MA.
Opening Reception Oct. 2nd, 2-5pm
Both nature and music are driving forces in my art. And, as I work, these words by Spanish painter Joan Miro are never far away: โI try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music.โ
It has been said that one can live in the dreariest corners of the world all the while performing color miracles on the dreariest of days. German artists Nolde and Kandinsky did just that during the dark impending doom of war suggesting color to be more a matter of preference for expression rather than allegiance to source. Perhaps, color for these courageous artists was embedded in a sense of optimism and hope despite all odds.
I am blessed to live here on Cape Ann where the geography and the light has informed my work for many years. The natural beauty of Cape Ann sweeping across granite; coastal views; hillside vistas is an ever present force in my work. On the way to my job in Gloucester, I travel over the Annisquam river bridge where the ocean below is an ever changing marvel of light and activity awaiting interpretation. Using abstract forms, I invite the viewer to experience my work without interruption of title. Energized by the interaction, I find viewer interpretation fascinating and exciting โ valid without exception.

This week from Jane Deering news of the final summer show of 2021:
Capping the summer season of exhibitions @ Jane Deering Gallery is The Cyanotype โฆ. and the end-of-summer blues. The gallery will host an Open House Saturday September 4th from 1:00-5:00pm at 19 Pleasant Street in Gloucester.
Artists Elizabeth Awalt and Tom Fels celebrate the luscious range of blue produced by unique cyanotypes and pay tribute to both Anna Atkins (long associated with the medium) and French photographer Charles Aubry. Felsโs work will also include several images related to Cape Ann.
THE CYANOTYPE
How often we think of Anna Atkins, the 19th-C botanist and photographer, when talking of cyanotypes. Atkins is strongly associated with the medium. Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, which Atkins privately published in 1843, has long been considered the first book illustrated with photographic images, cyanotype photograms of seaweed. I am delighted to bring to light a different algae, Elizabeth Awaltโs cyanotypes of dried kelp which the artist found in the cold, nutrient-rich waters near her summer studio in Maine. Akin to her paintings, Awaltโs cyanotypes โexpress her connection, curiosity, and concern for the natural world.
Tom Fels, of Vermont, first learned about cyanotypes through his work as a curator and writer with 19th century photographs. Fels writes โIn my attempt to capture some shadows on my home, I realized that cyanotypes were the right medium to employ…The appeal of the cyanotype comes in part from its color, which viewers often find spiritual and relaxing, as well as its ability to capture the nuances of movement inherent in working with living plants. Its interest to me was also in the process, which is fairly simple and can be done mostly outdoors.” His series Homage to Aubry is inspired by the still lifes of the French photographer Charles Aubry.
Gallery hours: Friday & Saturday 1-5pm; Sunday 1-4pm and by appointment at 917-902-4359 and info@janedeeringgallery.com.

Elizabeth Awalt grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to Boston to attend Boston College. As an undergraduate, she studied Fine Arts at Boston College where she returned to teach and became a tenured professor. She received her MFA degree at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by several fellowships including the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Yaddo, and MacDowell and the Millay Colony. She has been the recipient of both a Massachusetts Artists Fellowship in Painting and an Individual Artist Grant in Painting from the National Endowment of the Arts. Awaltโs work is in numerous public and private collections in the US and abroad. The artist maintains a studio in Concord Massachusetts and northern Maine.

Tom Fels, independent curator and writer specializing in American culture, photography, and art, has worked as consultant and guest curator to a number of museums, including the Canadian Centre for Architecture and the J. Paul Getty Museum. In 1986 he was named a Chester Dale Fellow of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in 1998-9 a Fletcher Jones Foundation Fellow of the Huntington Library. He has organized more than fifty exhibitions, and is the author of numerous catalogs, articles, and books including Sothebyโs Guide to Photographs (1998), and more recently works on contemporary American history. His large cyanotypes are represented in several museum and private collections, including the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Fels lives and works in southern Vermont. In 2013 he was writer-in-residence at the Gloucester Writers Center. Since 2014 he has shown with the Jane Deering Gallery.

Joy! Joy Halsted | what Iโve been doing in the time of โฆ. (covid)ย opening November 13th Jane Deering Gallery . 19 Pleasant Street . Gloucester, MA.ย
โThere is no artist on earth likeย Joy Halsted,โย wrote Pat Lowery Collins in her 2015 interview with the artist. The multi-faceted Halsted is an inventive, provocative, irreverent, playful, politically-aware, and process-oriented artist.ย ย And what has Joy Halsted been doing these many months since life and Covid-19 locked her and all of us indoors?ย ย Using process once again to compulsively knit. To knit hats with corona pompoms attached at the top.ย ย Anti-corona hats, as Joy nicknames them.ย ย
โHumor is our saving grace,โย she writes.ย โThe atmosphere is serious; weโre all feeling a bit lost. As an artist, I felt the need to raise spirits; to offer a new perspective.โย

As in $20. For original works of art.
Jane Deering sparks art and community amid the pandemic.

I checked in with Jane Deering to hear more about the show and how opening day went for this affordable art show/young collector boost and during a pandemic.
“The idea came to me about a year ago while thinking how I might make art more affordable for the many young people who’ve come to the gallery, expressed how much they admire the shows but were not able to purchase, even something at $100. Then COVID struck and I needed to get creative to stay alive.
As you know, Catherine, I’ve been living in London a long time. This sparked my memory of how the Royal College of Art started something back in 1995 called Absolut Secret (sponsored by Absolut Vodka — get it?) which raised money for scholarships to the RCA by offering small works (signed by the artist on the back) for a tuppence. Buyers wouldn’t know who the artist was until they bought the work and turned it over. One lucky buyer snapped up a David Hockney! So โฆ I confess I stole my idea for Absolute Secret 2020 from the RCA. Sometimes theft can bring good?
Anyway โฆ I contacted all the artists I’ve worked with over the years and asked each if they’d donate a small work. The outpouring of YES! was heartwarming. Oh, the wonder of artists. Such generosity and goodwill. I’m so grateful to all of them. Works have come from the many who have studios here on Cape Ann and parts throughout Massachusetts, but also New York, Maine, Vermont, California, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and Barcelona.
Yesterday’s opening was also a wonder. One of my favorite stories was of a young man (27 maybe?) who emailed back and forth with me for days over his obsession with a particular work. He asked if coming to stand in line by 12:30 would be too late? Ha! He was first in line (working all the time on his cell phone), first in the door when we opened at 1 o’clock, and first to get his special piece. Good for him!
Lots of conviviality. Lots of cheer. Some disappointments, of course; especially those who sent requests via email only to hear that their pics had sold. Can’t please everyone so my apologies to all who may have missed out. There are still many marvelous pieces to be had and several artists have brought me additional works to put up as the show thins out. Again, the generosity of artists!
Oh!…I’ve been asked ‘Why $20?’ Well, it’s the dreadful year 2020 so I thought I’d put the number 20 in a more upbeat light. And — back to the affordability factor — I wanted all those who find art beyond their purse strings to be able to have something wonderful. This show was meant for them.
And I hope that those who have the means, will return and support these wonderful artists (and the gallery) by buying art at a fairer price.
Thanks to all!”

Maybe I can leave $20 for a twenty something art fan? Artists are so generous.

ย
The highly textural paintings (12×12 and 8×8) have occupied my impulsive hands for several years (2008-2020). What started as an inquisitive exploration of materials and depth became the challenge of transforming a flat surface into a three-dimensional abyss. An additional challenge was to transform the restrictive visual enclosure of the square to a dynamic metamorphic journey. Primal materials such as earth pigments, charcoal and volcanic ash reiterate the grit of progression, stasis and ultimate demise. โ Deborah Brown
ย
Deborah Brown studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and has exhibited her work throughout the United States. She is intensely private so you will not unearth her presence on Social Media; not a philistine, just a hermit. Having spent considerable time in Alaska, she now continues her art practice in her recently adopted home of Gloucester MA.ย
ย
I see my work as visceral and evocative, an embedded imprint on the limbic brain, relentlessly touched, molded, scraped and scattered with earthbound dust. And with a certain threatening charm to engage and provoke the viewer.
Deborah Brown

The motions and rituals of daily activities all serve as prompts allowing Barker to incorporate walking, journey-taking, solitary contemplative actions โ into forms of drawing, sewing, knitting, wrapping, paper manipulation and performance.ย ย
In 2018 a sculptural piece was chosen forย ย exhibition at the 250th celebrationย The Great Spectacle: Summer Exhibitionย at The Royal Academy ofย Arts, London UK curated by British National Treasure, Grayson Perry.

The Bauhaus Inspired series began shortly after Barker moved to the West Country.ย Unable to work on large pieces, she began visiting antique/junk shops where a treasure trove of French silks was discovered.ย Convinced at the time these wereย โpaintingsโ despite theย ย fact that she was knitting them into squares, they were put aside until Januaryย ย of this year.ย With the addition of colors along the bottom of each piece they did become,ย in her mind, paintings.

Gail Barker grew up under the wide skies and on the flat landscape of East Anglia in Great Britain. She attended a Quaker primary school and later a farm school โ all of which influenced her love of space and a reverence for the simple rhythms of daily life. In 1977 she moved to Rochester, NY and then In 1989 to New England (Beverly Farms MA) where she graduated from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Bostonย ย She has exhibited at The Royal Academy of Arts, London UK; and performed with the collaborative Fourthland (https://www.fourthland.com) at The Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol UK and Bath UK.
