“In 2011 the Senate unanimously supported Small Business Saturday, and in 2012 all 50 states had participants. This one day event is bringing awareness of the importance in supporting your Local Small Businesses and giving many small businesses a way to promote at no cost to them. If you are an American Express merchant you are able to use the tools made available to you by AMEX. After major renovations to 120 Main Street, HUDSON GALLERY joins a great strip of businesses downtown. The ambitious inaugural exhibition features MJ Caseldon (sound sculpture) and Donna Caseldon (painting). Small business Saturday – how about an original newspaper story about Gloucester’s sea serpent? Dogtown Books will have that, rare and used books, work by local artists, and more.

Dogtown Books participates annually in the Boston Book print and Ephemera show. Bob was unpacking boxes from the fair the day I stopped by.
Unique and special children’s picture books and young adult chapter books. Plenty of Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl the day I was there.

BREAKING BUSINESS DISPATCH: Say thanks and goodbye G33K and welcome goodlinens on 130 Main St

G33K (‘geek’) a small business that was big in game will be closing its location in Gloucester, MA.

G33K is located in 130 Main Street between Dogtown Books and Main Street Art and Antiques. Make sure to stop by to say thanks and good luck! We were light customers–Pokémon packs and random t-shirt gifts—but always treated large. There is a store-wide closing sale on now.

When one door closes another opens. Welcome goodlinens opening July 1

Gloucester resident, business owner, designer and artisan JoAnne Chirico has been on the lookout for a ‘just right’ Main Street goodlinens headquarters for years, and boy has she found it! 130 Main Street is the one she’s been dreaming about as a retail work space, craft and creative show room. It is within an historic building and district, boasts 13 foot ceilings and has ample room for her vision and requirements. Did I mention great neighbors and the sunny side of the street?

As G33K moves out and goodlinens moves in to 130 Main Street, the space will be temporarily closed as it’s transformed in time for a July 1 soft summer launch and grand opening in September.

goodlinens new flagship store and open studio on Main Street will feature JoAnne’s handmade beautiful and functional designs along with selected hand made crafts from other artisans, local and beyond. The retail will include kitchen and housewares goods, unique and special objects, finds, and lighting. She embraces an open work studio concept in such an original and thoughtful way. This space will be a place for people making things. I expect it to be inspiring, playful, unexpected and comfortable. She has a lot in store for this store. She can’t wait to finally move boxes, case-goods and tables out of her home, her friends’ barns and other storage sites. Look for new Facebook and updates coming soon.

Swim For A Healthy World

 

Some of my earliest childhood memories are of swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. As a kid, I loved to wade, snorkel, bodyboard and run in the waves. Now, I swim the entire length of dirty waterways like the Hudson, the Charles,and the Columbia Rivers, in order to put the problems facing our water planet squarely in the public eye.

In the process, I have survived collisions with boats, 12-foot waves, lightning storms, class IV+ rapids, giant storage dams, industrial chemicals, nuclear waste, oil slicks, raw sewage, toxic blue-green algae, and repeated Sea Lamprey Eel attacks.

Stories about my environmental adventures reached a worldwide media audience of more than two billion people, but the bulletins I sent back from the big wet world weren’t always uplifting: high levels of CO2 were acidifying the oceans, manmade toxics were spewing into rivers, and fisheries were collapsing as factory ships scoured the seas.

When I was a boy, this was business as usual, but now there is a worldwide scientific consensus that we need to change our ways before our planet becomes a place where we can no longer live.
My 1,500 mile swim from Maine to Washington, DC, isn’t just designed to raise awareness of the challenges facing the ocean, but to sample the water at over 5,000 locations along my route to measure and map the effects of pollution and Climate Change, and to challenge over 50,000 schoolchildren to launch projects designed to improve the health of our ocean planet.

As usual, it is not easy. I have to deal with frigid water temperatures, nasty currents, severe storms, and dangerous fish. But if I want my daughters to inherit a healthy world, this is the least I can do.
When the effort ends, I hope it will have benefitted more than just my children. I hope there will be tens of thousands of kids leaning on their parents, teachers and caregivers to protect our ocean planet.
