My tribute unfolds in four parts—Sculpture, Drawing, Painting and Video.”

Artists working in Gloucester, and more broadly on Cape Ann, have a unique vision of the promontory. What is their feel for our place along the sea? And how do they wish to present it to us, the viewers of their thoughts? Each exploration of light, land, sky, stone, architecture, industry, and countless other features is singular. JANE DEERING ABOUT THIS SHOW:

My interest lies in how artists living and working in Gloucester, and more broadly on Cape Ann, express their vision of the promontory. What is their feel for our place along the sea? As they encounter it, and closely observe it, how do they wish to present it to us, the viewers of their thoughts? Each exploration of light, land, sky, stone, architecture, industry, and countless other features is singular. There is communication between artist and place; and we sense, we hear, those conversations in their art.

The New York Times recently penned the phrase to see it all anew, an apt phrase that could easily have been the title for this show.

After giving the gallery to regional artists for their own exhibitions these past months, I am happy to be back at JDG for the summer season. Join me for this first show which celebrates seeing and hearing anew this place of home.

Juni Van Dyke | Alternative Colors for Dark Times: An exhibition of paintings that gives rise to positive emotions, Jane Deering Gallery, 19 Pleasant Street , Gloucester, MA.

Opening Reception Oct. 2nd, 2-5pm

Both nature and music are driving forces in my art. And, as I work, these words by Spanish painter Joan Miro are never far away: “I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music.”

It has been said that one can live in the dreariest corners of the world all the while performing color miracles on the dreariest of days. German artists Nolde and Kandinsky did just that during the dark impending doom of war suggesting color to be more a matter of preference for expression rather than allegiance to source. Perhaps, color for these courageous artists was embedded in a sense of optimism and hope despite all odds.

I am blessed to live here on Cape Ann where the geography and the light has informed my work for many years. The natural beauty of Cape Ann sweeping across granite; coastal views; hillside vistas is an ever present force in my work. On the way to my job in Gloucester, I travel over the Annisquam river bridge where the ocean below is an ever changing marvel of light and activity awaiting interpretation. Using abstract forms, I invite the viewer to experience my work without interruption of title. Energized by the interaction, I find viewer interpretation fascinating and exciting — valid without exception.

About the artist

Juni Van Dyke is a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and holds an MAT from Tufts University. Since 1996, she has been the Director of the Arts Program at the Rose Baker Senior Center, Gloucester Massachusetts; under her direction, work created by the senior citizens has been exhibited in museums and public institutions in New England. She is the recipient of several awards and grants, including the St. Botolph Foundation Award, Boston; the Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant; and an honorary citation from the Massachusetts Senate for her outstanding contribution to the arts. VanDyke’s work is held in the permanent collection of the Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester, Massachusetts and in numerous private collections. Her work was selected by Room&Board for inclusion in its limited edition art series and is on view throughout the US in Room&Board locations. Van Dyke lives and works in Manchester, MA. This is her fifth solo show with the gallery .

Mary Rhinelander McCarl Obituary


Mary Frederica Rhinelander McCarl died of heart failure on Monday, June 7, in Gloucester, Mass., at age 81. Born on May 3, 1940, in Abington, Pa., to Constance Templeton Rhinelander and Frederic William Rhinelander, M.D., she came of age in Boston. A proud graduate of the Winsor School for girls in 1957, she finished her bachelor’s degree in history magna cum laude at Radcliffe College in 1961. Over the next three decades, she earned three master’s degrees, in history (Harvard), library sciences (Simmons College), and archival sciences (UMass/Boston). She also completed the coursework for two history doctorates: the first in medieval studies in the 1960s at Harvard, and the second in the 1980s and 1990s in the History of the Book program at Boston University.

She was a gifted cook and artist specializing in watercolors, acrylics, fiber art, and collage. She was also a published scholar. In her 1997 book The Plowman’s Tale, she proved that published versions of Geoffrey Chaucer’s fourteenth-century Canterbury Tales contained a forgery written by radical Protestants centuries later during England’s religious wars. Her articles on colonial New England include histories of Salem’s witchcraft crisis (1692) and medical knowledge. Her historical activism includes her leadership in funding restoration of Gloucester’s 1876 city hall building. In 2015, she won a Citizenship Award from the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church.

Her first marriage, to John S. C. (Jack) Morgan, ended in divorce. Preceding her in death are her parents; her brother, John B. Rhinelander; and her stepdaughter, Kathy Maisel. She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Henry Newton McCarl; her daughter, Francesca Morgan (Charles Steinwedel) of Evanston, Ill.; two stepchildren, Patricia McCarl (Sussi Shavers) of Atlanta and Fred McCarl (April) of Oneonta, Ala.; two brothers, Frederic W. T. Rhinelander (Patricia) and David H. Rhinelander (Ann W.), and sister-in-law Jeanne C. Rhinelander, all of Gloucester; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews including Edward L. Widmer.

Her family will announce a memorial service in Gloucester at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Constance T. Rhinelander Performance Fund, Sawyer Free Library, 2 Dale Avenue, Gloucester, MA, 01930, 978-325-5500. Please specify the Rhinelander Performance Fund on all checks. Calling all Gloucester, Cape Ann, North Shore and New England area artists! One monumental exterior wall and two interior sites are available for commission submission in downtown Gloucester on the new apartment building, Harbor Village. The exterior mural $5500 (fee & materials. Lift will be supplied.) Two mural opportunities (10 x 10; 10 x 15) inside are $2000 each (fee & materials).

Action, Inc.’s support of the arts

Action, Inc. continues a tradition of supporting the arts with these new commissions. The organization has a history of collaboration with community arts partners, commissioning original public art for its buildings, and preserving any historic assets (buildings and art).

South Shore Art Center features North Shore artists Coco Berkman, Pia Juhl and Juni VanDyke #CohassetMA

From North Shore to South Shore…Gloucester Comes to Cohasset 

Featuring three artists: COCO BERKMAN, PIA JUHL, JUNI VANDYKE

Cape Ann artist printmaker Coco Berkman creates images that delight her and hopefully others through the process of linoleum printmaking. Inspired by literature, the natural world, and the free play inherent in drawing, Berkman uses sharp Japanese tools to carve images into sheets of linoleum and then prints them one color at a time over several months to complete an edition. A member of the Boston Printmakers, Berkman’s work is represented by 13 Forest Gallery in Arlington and The Square Circle Gallery in Rockport. 

Pia Juhl, is well known for her light filled paintings depicting quarries and giant rock formations indigenous to her surroundings.  She has had numerous exhibitions in Europe and on Cape Ann including Jane Deering Gallery.    

Juni VanDyke will exhibit paintings related to her connection with Gloucester.  “The Cape Ann landscape is a subliminal force directing my art and tethering me to a love of color and the infinite configurations of abstraction.  Traveling to my work in Gloucester, I cross over the elevated Annisquam Bridge where below the sea is an ever changing miracle of patterns and light holding promise for later.”   VanDyke’s work is held in the permanent collection of Cape Ann Museum.  Her work is represented by Jane Deering Gallery, and throughout the US by Room and Board, Inc.

The exhibition continues through October 30th.

The first thing I noticed upon rediscovering these drawings made in Italy nearly thirty years ago is how related they appear to be to my current work. These small drawings, reprinted and overlaid with color were my response to a foreign landscape that had excited and animated my attention. As I traveled without camera throughout Italian villages, hillsides, canals, and cities, drawing was my way of preserving memory. Today, I use drawing more as an abstract element for pictorial balance. But the affinity I had for color those many years ago remains steadfast, reminding me that color is the driving force that continues to define my work. Wit the ebb and flow of time my work has evolved in ways that I would not have imagined thirty years ago. Still, the element of color is constant allowing for surprise and recognition.

Preview 2019 Sawyer Free Annual Art Auction

The preview and silent bidding for the annual art auction is open through September 30th! Come see what work 67 generous artists and supporters have donated this year to help raise money for the Friends of the Sawyer Free Library. The art is hung salon style in groups on the five walls of the Matz Gallery just inside the Gloucester Lyceum Sawyer Free Library entrance.

Today’s program Seaside Saturdays: Cape Ann Reads Book Fun was enjoyed by all ages and featured the Once Upon a Contest group exhibition, stories and special guest artist, Juni VanDyke, who illustrated the If I Were series by James McKenna. Seaside Saturdays is a joint offering by Early Childhood Partners/CFCE, Manchester Public Library & Manchester Historical Museum. Once Upon a Contest Selections from Cape Ann Reads by the four libraries of Cape Ann is on display at Manchester Historical Museum through April 26th. In addition to the new and original books by local artists and writers, don’t miss Leslie Galacar’s four part public art sequence made just for this venue.

The exhibition Paige Farrell | Relationships will be at Jane Deering Gallery, 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester MA through February 27th with a reception on Saturday February 23rd from 4:00-6:30pm. Farrell (writer, sommelier, and wine consultant) reveals the relationship between the world of two arts — the art of photography and the art of the grape. Her monthly wine column appears in Northshore Magazine, and she writes for The SOMM Journal, Boston Wine School, Winestone, and Reservoir and Wollaston Wine & Spirits. Farrell will be traveling to Valencia, Spain in March as the official wine correspondent for the Boston press, then to the Champagne region in France. Farrell holds a BA in French from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with studies at Paris-Sorbonne University, Paris, France and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. “This is Adare who just returned from Kenya,” writes Deborah French, Library Director of the TOHP Burnham Library in Essex, Massachusetts. The family captioned the photograph “So here is Cape Ann Reads with a giraffe!” What a super travel photo, and kind shout out to Cape Ann Reads and Cape Ann.

“Mary Rhinelander McCarl- Mary, a Gloucester resident, draws her artistic inspiration from the scenery of Cape Ann. In her youth, she studied both sculpture and figure drawing with George Demetrios. She has worked under the guidance of Juni Van Dyke in the Art Room of the Rose Baker Senior Center and studied watercolors with Susie Field. At present Mary uses her training as an archivist to transcribe and edit the papers of Samuel Elwell Sawyer, Gloucester’s great philanthropist and art collector.”
